Book Synopsis Monte Carlo Simulation and Resampling Methods for Social Science by : Thomas M. Carsey
Download or read book Monte Carlo Simulation and Resampling Methods for Social Science written by Thomas M. Carsey and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-08-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the topics of a quantitative methodology course and illustrating them through Monte Carlo simulation, this book examines abstract principles, such as bias, efficiency, and measures of uncertainty in an intuitive, visual way. Instead of thinking in the abstract about what would happen to a particular estimator "in repeated samples," the book uses simulation to actually create those repeated samples and summarize the results. The book includes basic examples appropriate for readers learning the material for the first time, as well as more advanced examples that a researcher might use to evaluate an estimator he or she was using in an actual research project. The book also covers a wide range of topics related to Monte Carlo simulation, such as resampling methods, simulations of substantive theory, simulation of quantities of interest (QI) from model results, and cross-validation. Complete R code from all examples is provided so readers can replicate every analysis presented using R.

Book Synopsis Monte Carlo Simulation by : Christopher Z. Mooney
Download or read book Monte Carlo Simulation written by Christopher Z. Mooney and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-04-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monte Carlo Simulation is a method of evaluating substantive hypotheses and statistical estimators by developing a computer algorithm to simulate a population, drawing multiple samples from this pseudo-population, and evaluating estimates obtained from these samples. Christopher Z. Mooney explains the logic behind Monte Carlo Simulation and demonstrates its uses for social and behavioral research in conducting inference using statistics with only weak mathematical theory, testing null hypotheses under a variety of plausible conditions, assessing the robustness of parametric inference to violations of its assumptions, assessing the quality of inferential methods, and comparing the properties of two or more estimators. In addition, Mooney carefully demonstrates how to prepare computer algorithms using GAUSS code and illustrates these principles using several research examples. is a method of evaluating substantive hypotheses and statistical estimators by developing a computer algorithm to simulate a population, drawing multiple samples from this pseudo-population, and evaluating estimates obtained from these samples. Book Synopsis Wildlife 2001: Populations by : D.R. McCullough
Download or read book Wildlife 2001: Populations written by D.R. McCullough and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, a conference called Wildlife 2000: Modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, was held at Stanford Sierra Camp at Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The conference was well-received, and the published volume (Verner, J. , M. L. Morrison, and C. J. Ralph, editors. 1986. Wildlife 2000: modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, University of Wisconsin Press, Madison, Wisconsin, USA) proved to be a landmark publication that received a book award by The Wildlife Society. Wildlife 2001: populations was a followup conference with emphasis on the other major biological field of wildlife conservation and management, populations. It was held on July 29-31, 1991, at the Oakland Airport Hilton Hotel in Oakland, California, in accordance with our intent that this conference have a much stronger international representation than did Wildlife 2000. The goal of the conference was to bring together an international group of specialists to address the state of the art in wildlife population dynamics, and set the agenda for future research and management on the threshold of the 21st century. The mix of specialists included workers in theoretical, as well as practical, aspects of wildlife conservation and management. Three general sessions covered methods, modelling, and conservation of threatened species.

Book Synopsis A Monte Carlo Study of the Robustness of Coefficient Alpha by : Sharon G. Shultz
Download or read book A Monte Carlo Study of the Robustness of Coefficient Alpha written by Sharon G. Shultz and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biasedness and efficiency of coefficient alpha were studied given various error score distribution, number of examinees, population reliability values, and number of subtests. A Monte Carlo methodology was used in which an additive true score matrix was constructed and an error score was added to each true score. The true scores were uniformly distributed while the error score distributions used were the normal, mixed normal, exponential, and the negative exponential. In addition, 1000 replications were used and the resulting sampling distributions were examined with respect to their skewness and kurtosis.
