Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a baby boy born to a young couple who had moved to Montana. The young man had come with his father from back east, and the young lady had come from the city of St. Paul, Minnesota. Only a couple of years apart, they met and things went real well. He courted her by horse and buggy. Though they were working about 10 miles apart, they would often go to dances together, and thought nothing of traveling another 4 or 5 miles to get some place. I'll bet they had a lot of fun on the road without that steering wheel in front of them! My dad couldn't use the excuse that " the car ran out of gas". This man had started to prove himself up on a homestead. It wasn't long before the young couple married in 1913. Then in 1914 they had their first baby, named Leonard. That is when I started to make things happen. As a result of the relationship, they loved their son and I loved them. There is a lot of love for the family...the way I believe a family should feel toward each other.

During the depression years the family made their own good times with many humorous stories and made the best of the bad. This story takes you to Missoula, Montana then to Grand Coulee Dam as it was being built then later to San Francisco during World War 11 where she raised her three teenaged daughters and then the fun began.

A former coal miner, Kalfell saw the profit to be had in eastern Montana's agricultural industry. In Since the Days of the Buffalo, Michael Bugenstien chronicles the challenges and achievements of Gottlieb Kalfell, as well as the trials faced by ranchers on the plains. Beginning with the first inhabitants who crossed the Bering Strait and ending with a history of the Kalfell Ranch since 1930, Since the Days of the Buffalo is a comprehensive yet concise history of eastern Montana and eastern Montana ranching focusing on the Kalfell Ranch. The Kalfell Ranch has been in the Kalfell family continuously for 130 years, making it an excellent example of successful ranching. Bugenstein's readable style makes Since the Days of the Buffalo an enjoyable and entertaining read -- from website.

Book excerpt: Lori, the heroine of this rousing narrative, is attempting to flee the hectic East Coast for a better life in the West. She is a child of the Seventies who feels misled by the rebellious "boomer" generation and disappointed with life in 1980s New Jersey. Spurred by the tale of her pioneering grandparents, who immigrated to Montana, and following her friend Madeleine, who has all the answers, Lori quits her job, loosens her ties, and sets off into a wild frontier. Lori's story is one of love for people and for places that are more mythic than real. Her pursuit is as painfully familiar as it is impossible: she seeks meaning in life while working dead-end jobs, falls in love with uninterested partners, and plans a future that seems doomed from the start. Somehow, though, she persists and ultimately finds her place as a twenty-first-century pioneer.

This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “anthropological history” tells the story of homesteading and community organization in the Canadian-American West through personal reminiscences and locally written histories. John W. Bennett and Seena B. Kohl interpret those stories through the lenses of history and social science, and they present a view of settlement experience as one phase of the evolving postfrontier society and culture of western North America. Settling the Canadian-American West, 1890–1915 contains a synthesis of Canadian and U.S. settlement experiences giving, to the extent possible, equal space to both sides of the international boundary. The experiences of people in these adjacent territories were virtually identical, with emigrant populations from the same countries and socioeconomic strata. Among other aspects of the homesteading experience, the authors explore the “interactive adaptation” that developed in the West. Networks of mutual aid, reverently remembered by the voices found in these pages, eased the inevitable hardships.

Book excerpt: “His memories flow as naturally as his writing. . . . The reader is transported back to the day when a six-year-old stepped from the train into a new life.”—Smithsonian As a grown man, Percy Wollaston almost never spoke of the homestead where he grew up—until, in 1972, nearing the age of 70, he wrote this book about his childhood years. Lured by the government’s promise of land and the promotional literature of the railroads, six-year-old Percy Wollaston’s family left behind their home in North Dakota in 1909, heading West to “take up a claim." They settled near Ismay, Montana, where they attempted to carve a successful homestead out of the harsh plains. In compelling, plainspoken language, Wollaston tells of his pioneer family’s everyday existence—constructing a sod house, digging a well, trapping and hunting, courtships and funerals, an influenza epidemic, and a superstitious Irish neighbor. He also recalls the events of the world beyond Ismay, from the sinking of the Titanic, to Prohibition, to World War I, as well as the first sign of the town’s demise during the Great Depression. With a foreword by Jonathan Raban, who discovered this memoir while researching his award-winning Bad Land, Homesteading is a rich and vivid look, seen through the eyes of a hopeful young boy, at the forces that shaped the destiny of a family, a town, and the American West. “Vivid . . . plainly written and satisfyingly detailed.”—The Washington Post
