This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pick function is a function that is analytic in the upper half-plane with positive imaginary part. In the first part of this book we try to give a readable account of this class of functions as well as one of the standard proofs of the spectral theorem based on properties of this class. In the remainder of the book we treat a closely related topic: Loewner's theory of monotone matrix functions and his analytic continuation theorem which guarantees that a real function on an interval of the real axis which is a monotone matrix function of arbitrarily high order is the restriction to that interval of a Pick function. In recent years this theorem has been complemented by the Loewner-FitzGerald theorem, giving necessary and sufficient conditions that the continuation provided by Loewner's theorem be univalent. In order that our presentation should be as complete and trans parent as possible, we have adjoined short chapters containing the in formation about reproducing kernels, almost positive matrices and certain classes of conformal mappings needed for our proofs.
Book Synopsis Loewner's Theorem on Monotone Matrix Functions by : Barry Simon
Download or read book Loewner's Theorem on Monotone Matrix Functions written by Barry Simon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in depth discussion of Loewner’s theorem on the characterization of matrix monotone functions. The author refers to the book as a ‘love poem,’ one that highlights a unique mix of algebra and analysis and touches on numerous methods and results. The book details many different topics from analysis, operator theory and algebra, such as divided differences, convexity, positive definiteness, integral representations of function classes, Pick interpolation, rational approximation, orthogonal polynomials, continued fractions, and more. Most applications of Loewner’s theorem involve the easy half of the theorem. A great number of interesting techniques in analysis are the bases for a proof of the hard half. Centered on one theorem, eleven proofs are discussed, both for the study of their own approach to the proof and as a starting point for discussing a variety of tools in analysis. Historical background and inclusion of pictures of some of the main figures who have developed the subject, adds another depth of perspective. The presentation is suitable for detailed study, for quick review or reference to the various methods that are presented. The book is also suitable for independent study. The volume will be of interest to research mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students working in matrix theory and approximation, as well as to analysts and mathematical physicists.

Download or read book Fast Algorithms for Structured Matrices written by Vadim Olshevsky and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best known fast computational algorithms is the fast Fourier transform method. Its efficiency is based mainly on the special structure of the discrete Fourier transform matrix. Recently, many other algorithms of this type were discovered, and the theory of structured matrices emerged. This volume contains 22 survey and research papers devoted to a variety of theoretical and practical aspects of the design of fast algorithms for structured matrices and related issues. Included are several papers containing various affirmative and negative results in this direction. The theory of rational interpolation is one of the excellent sources providing intuition and methods to design fast algorithms. The volume contains several computational and theoretical papers on the topic. There are several papers on new applications of structured matrices, e.g., to the design of fast decoding algorithms, computing state-space realizations, relations to Lie algebras, unconstrained optimization, solving matrix equations, etc. The book is suitable for mathematicians, engineers, and numerical analysts who design, study, and use fast computational algorithms based on the theory of structured matrices.

Reflecting these three periods in Victor Emmanuilovich's career, present and former colleagues have contributed to this book with research inspired by him and presentations on their joint work. Contributions include papers in function theory (Favorov-Golinskii, Friedland-Goldman-Yomdin, Kheifets-Yuditskii) , Schur analysis, moment problems and related topics (Boiko-Dubovoy, Dyukarev, Fritzsche-Kirstein-Mädler), extension of linear operators and linear relations (Dijksma-Langer, Hassi-de Snoo, Hassi -Wietsma) and non-commutative analysis (Ball-Bolotnikov, Cho-Jorgensen).
Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis on Semigroups by : C. van den Berg
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis on Semigroups written by C. van den Berg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourier transform and the Laplace transform of a positive measure share, together with its moment sequence, a positive definiteness property which under certain regularity assumptions is characteristic for such expressions. This is formulated in exact terms in the famous theorems of Bochner, Bernstein-Widder and Hamburger. All three theorems can be viewed as special cases of a general theorem about functions qJ on abelian semigroups with involution (S, +, *) which are positive definite in the sense that the matrix (qJ(sJ + Sk» is positive definite for all finite choices of elements St, . . . , Sn from S. The three basic results mentioned above correspond to (~, +, x* = -x), ([0, 00[, +, x* = x) and (No, +, n* = n). The purpose of this book is to provide a treatment of these positive definite functions on abelian semigroups with involution. In doing so we also discuss related topics such as negative definite functions, completely mono tone functions and Hoeffding-type inequalities. We view these subjects as important ingredients of harmonic analysis on semigroups. It has been our aim, simultaneously, to write a book which can serve as a textbook for an advanced graduate course, because we feel that the notion of positive definiteness is an important and basic notion which occurs in mathematics as often as the notion of a Hilbert space.

For nearly 50 years Lyapunov inequalities have been an important tool in the study of differential equations. In this survey, building on an excellent 1991 historical survey by Cheng, we sketch some new developments in the theory of Lyapunov inequalities and present some recent disconjugacy results relating to second and higher order differential equations as well as Hamiltonian systems. 1. Introduction Lyapunov's inequality has proved useful in the study of spectral properties of ordinary differential equations. Typical applications include bounds for eigenvalues, stability criteria for periodic differential equations, and estimates for intervals of disconjugacy.
Book Synopsis Hypercomplex Analysis: New Perspectives and Applications by : Swanhild Bernstein
Download or read book Hypercomplex Analysis: New Perspectives and Applications written by Swanhild Bernstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypercomplex analysis is the extension of complex analysis to higher dimensions where the concept of a holomorphic function is substituted by the concept of a monogenic function. In recent decades this theory has come to the forefront of higher dimensional analysis. There are several approaches to this: quaternionic analysis which merely uses quaternions, Clifford analysis which relies on Clifford algebras, and generalizations of complex variables to higher dimensions such as split-complex variables. This book includes a selection of papers presented at the session on quaternionic and hypercomplex analysis at the ISAAC conference 2013 in Krakow, Poland. The topics covered represent new perspectives and current trends in hypercomplex analysis and applications to mathematical physics, image analysis and processing, and mechanics.

Book Synopsis The Schur Algorithm, Reproducing Kernel Spaces and System Theory by : Daniel Alpay
Download or read book The Schur Algorithm, Reproducing Kernel Spaces and System Theory written by Daniel Alpay and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The class of Schur functions consists of analytic functions on the unit disk that are bounded by $1$. The Schur algorithm associates to any such function a sequence of complex constants, which is much more useful than the Taylor coefficients. There is a generalization to matrix-valued functions and a corresponding algorithm. These generalized Schur functions have important applications to the theory of linear operators, to signal processing and control theory, and to other areas of engineering. In this book, Alpay looks at matrix-valued Schur functions and their applications from the unifying point of view of spaces with reproducing kernels. This approach is used here to study the relationship between the modeling of time-invariant dissipative linear systems and the theory of linear operators. The inverse scattering problem plays a key role in the exposition. The point of view also allows for a natural way to tackle more general cases, such as nonstationary systems, non-positive metrics, and pairs of commuting nonself-adjoint operators. This is the English translation of a volume originally published in French by the Societe Mathematique de France. Translated by Stephen S. Wilson.

Book Synopsis Orthogonal Rational Functions by : Adhemar Bultheel
Download or read book Orthogonal Rational Functions written by Adhemar Bultheel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-13 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book generalises the classical theory of orthogonal polynomials on the complex unit circle, or on the real line to orthogonal rational functions whose poles are among a prescribed set of complex numbers. The first part treats the case where these poles are all outside the unit disk or in the lower half plane. Classical topics such as recurrence relations, numerical quadrature, interpolation properties, Favard theorems, convergence, asymptotics, and moment problems are generalised and treated in detail. The same topics are discussed for the different situation where the poles are located on the unit circle or on the extended real line. In the last chapter, several applications are mentioned including linear prediction, Pisarenko modelling, lossless inverse scattering, and network synthesis. This theory has many applications in theoretical real and complex analysis, approximation theory, numerical analysis, system theory, and in electrical engineering.
