Book excerpt: Problems of development in what is normally called the Third World have been a subject matter of concern of the social sciences, lespecially of eco nomics, for over two decades now. 1 Between the late 1950s and the current time, as Chapter 2 attempts to show, the emphasis seems to have shifted from purely economic considerations of underdevelopment to a paradigm that includes other, extra-economic considerations of a social, political, and cultural nature. The recent emergence of development studies as a new social science discipline stems precisely from the methodological premise that development is a complex process that can only be adequately under of a stood, analyzed, and alleviated by a cross-disciplinary approach instead 2 wholly unidisciplinary one. We do not wish to challenge the above proposition. However, it remains of certain economic phenomena that pose problems true that an assessment of to developing countries can offer us greater insights into problems development, including the formulation of appropriate policies aimed at improving socioeconomic conditions in such countries. is restrictive business practices. This study is con One such phenomenon of restrictive business practices as they cerned mainly with surveying aspects relate to problems of development in the Third World. Restrictive business xiii xiv INTRODUCTION practices are not confined to developing countries; however, limited work seems to have been conducted in terms of relating the concept of restrictive business practices to problems of development. The existing evidence of restrictive business practices in the development process is quite fragmen tary.

Book excerpt: This book brings together for the first time five French directors who have established themselves as among the most exciting and significant working today: Bruno Dumont, Robert Guédiguian, Laurent Cantet, Abdellatif Kechiche, and Claire Denis. Whatever their chosen habitats or shifting terrains, each of these highly distinctive auteurs has developed unique strategies of representation and framing that reflect a profound investment in the geophysical world. The book proposes that we think about cinematographic space in its many different forms simultaneously (screenspace, landscape, narrative space, soundscape, spectatorial space). Through a series of close and original readings of selected films, it posits a new 'space of the cinematic subject'. Accessible and wide-ranging, this volume opens up new areas of critical enquiry in the expanding interdisciplinary field of space studies. It will be of immediate interest to students and researchers working not only in film studies and film philosophy, but also in French/Francophone studies, postcolonial studies, gender and cultural studies.Listen to James S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume identifies the various country specific factors that warrant changes in the design and implementation of competition laws. The book covers case studies of nine countries of differing sizes and at varying stages of economic development, that have at one stage or another repealed extant competition laws for new ones, and seeks to examine the motivations and contexts under which this was done. The countries examined include the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Ireland, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, Tanzania and the UK. Tracing the evolution of competition regimes in the countries covered, the book provides lessons for countries still in the process of forming their competition regimes. The contributions show that the road to strong competition regimes is seldom smooth, and that social, economic and political factors in the country hugely impact on the pace and effectiveness of competition reforms. The volume also addresses the issue of when the development of competition policies and laws can be seen to be in conflict with national development strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English as a Legal Language is a lawyer's plain language guide to English legal terminology. Anyone who finds it difficult to express legal terms in English simply looks under the general heading to find the relevant terms and their usage. This book can also be used to find explanations of words from a translating dictionary. Further, it is structured as a thesaurus, organized according to topic with an alphabetical index. More and more, lawyers need the English language. But attempts to convert the language to meet one's own purpose often result in misconceptions. English legal language has its roots in the Anglo-American legal tradition and the non-native speaking lawyer may have difficulty understanding a word choice in English without also seeing how it fits into legal thinking and relates to other words in the subject area as a whole. English as a Legal Language offers a comparative lexicon of US and UK legal systems, with references to European legal systems. Special features of this work include: - The vocabulary of an entire area of law in each section; - A verb section which provides guidance on substantives, adjectives, adverbs, phrases, usage, as well as sample sentences and clues about typical mistakes; and - An index which gives an alphabetical rendition of the topically ordered definitions - essential for words that have multiple definitions. All lawyers working in English, and especially continental European lawyers, will find this book indispensable in their practices. The book is also of prime interest to business people, accountants, translators, legal secretaries and students. It will enable all practitioners and academics to express complex ideas in English, to understand the intricacies of English as a legal language, and to avoid the potential mishaps, when language barriers prevent a true meeting of minds.

This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major problem associated with the regulation of transnational mergers, which affect several national markets, is the allocation of jurisdiction. Each country concerned may wish to exert jurisdiction and apply its national competition law to regulate the anti-competitive effects a merger may have in its territory. However, this approach may lead to risks of inconsistent decisions regarding the legality of mergers. Indeed, the national competition laws applied by the regulating authorities may diverge in several aspects, which raise the likelihood of inconsistency. Therefore it is desirable to opt for regulatory approaches which are more sensitive to the transnational nature of mergers and which allow cooperation between competition authorities. A possible solution may be bilateral cooperation agreements through which two countries coordinate the enforcement activities of their national competition authorities. However, the benefits of these agreements are enjoyed only by the signatory parties. The sole reliance upon bilateral agreements does not appear to be the optimal regulatory approach towards transnational mergers.
