Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fundamental physical picture of various phenomena occurring in organic monolayers, dealing with dielectric, elastic, and electronic properties. The dielectric properties are discussed in terms of orientational order parameters, which are used to interpret the dielectric spectrum observed through Maxwell displacement current measurement and optical second harmonic generation measurement. The elastic theory of organic monolayers is based on that of liquid crystals and emphasis is placed on the interfacial effect when discussing the electronic properties of organic monolayers. The discussion in the book mainly concerns the structure dependence (dipole moment) and thickness dependence (interfacial effect) for various phenomena occurring in organic monolayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retardation of Evaporation by Monolayers: Transport Processes covers the papers presented at the Symposium on The Retardation of Evaporation by Monolayers, held under the sponsorship of the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society in September 1960. The book focuses on the processes, reactions, methodologies, and technologies involved in the retardation of evaporation by monolayers. The selection first offers information on the evaporation resistances of monolayers of long-chain acids and alcohols and their mixtures and laboratory investigation and evaluation of monolayers for retarding the evaporation of water. The book then examines the effect of monomolecular films on the surface temperature of water; influence of surface-active compounds upon the diffusion of gases across air-water interface; and energy barrier for monolayer penetration. Discussions focus on the effects of hydrogen substitution on evaporation, effects of a monomolecular film of a saturated fatty acid or alcohol, effects of a polar group on evaporation, and determination of surface temperature. The text takes a look at the permeability of monolayers to several gases; effects of bacterial decomposition of hexadecanol and octadecanol in monolayer films on the suppression of evaporation loss of water; and aspects of evaporation. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in the transport processes involved in the retardation of evaporation by monolayers.

Book excerpt: How can the two dimensional crystallization of colloids be used to form highly ordered colloidal monolayers on solid substrates? What application does this have in generating arrays of nanostructures? These questions are addressed in Nicolas Vogel's thesis. Vogel describes a simple preparation method for the formation of uniform colloidal crystals over large areas, which he refines to yield more complex binary and non-close-packed arrangements. These monolayers can be applied to a process termed colloidal lithography which is used to prepare high quality metallic nanostructures with tailored properties defined to suit a variety of applications. Moreover, the author describes a method used to create metallic nanodot arrays with a resolution unprecedented for colloidal lithography methods. The author also outlines methodology to embed nanoparticle arrays into the substrate, which is developed and used to design robust, re-usable biosensor platforms and nanoscale patterns of biomimetic lipid bilayer membranes. The research in this thesis has led to a large number of publications in internationally renowned journals.

Book excerpt: Over the last decades, the study of surfactants (detergents, for example) has been profoundly changed by ideas and techniques from physics, chemistry, and materials science. Among these are: self assembly; critical phenomena, scaling, and renormalization; high-resolution scattering, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This book represents the first systematic account of these new developments, providing both a general introduction to the subject as well as a review of recent developments. The book will be a very useful tool for the biophysist, biochemist or physical chemist working in the field of surfactants.

Book excerpt: During the past few decades, much research has been reported on the formation of insoluble monomolecular films of lipids and biopolymers (synthetic polymers and proteins) on the surface of water or at the oil-water interface. This interest arises from the fact that monomolecular film studies have been found to provide much useful information on a molecular scale, information that is useful for understanding many industrial and biological phenomena in chemical, agricultural, pharmaceutical, medical, and food science applications. For instance, information obtained from lipid monolayer studies has been useful in determining the forces that are known to stabilize emulsions and biological cell membranes. The current texts on surface chemistry generally devote a single chapter to the characteristics of spread monolayers of lipids and biopolymers on liquids, and a researcher may have to review several hundred references to determine the procedures needed to investigate or analyze a particular phenomenon. Furthermore, there is an urgent need at this stage for a text that discusses the state of the art regarding the surface pheqomena exhibited by lipids and biopolymers, as they are relevant to a wide variety of surface and interfacial processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biosensor is a device in which a bioactive layer lies in direct contact with a transducer whose responses to change in the bioactive layer generate eloctronic signals for interpretation. The bioactive layer may consist of membrane-bound enzymes, anti-bodies, or receptors. The potential of this blend of electronics and biotechnology includes the direct assay of clinically important substrates (e.g. blood glucose) and of substances too unstable for storage or whose concentrations fluctuate rapidly. Written by the leading researchers in the field, this book reflects the most current developments in successfully constructing a biosensor. Major applications are in the fields of pharmacology, molecular biology, virology and electronics.
