Book Synopsis What Is a Squirrel Monkey by : Carol Creager
Download or read book What Is a Squirrel Monkey written by Carol Creager and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squirrel monkeys are very sociable; we live in family groups. Our range is extremely limited, and we are the rarest monkeys in Costa Rica. Why are we endangered? Our habitat is being destroyed. Also, we are the cutest of all monkeys, I say with all modesty, so illegal trappers catch us and sell us. Please, please, please, never buy a squirrel monkey! Jumper Why buy WHAT IS A SQUIRREL MONKEY? Children deserve to see real photographs of an adorable squirrel monkey who teaches them about Costa Rica wildlife. Wild animals should be regarded as an essential part of our world. The book includes facts about squirrel monkeys presented with cute photographs to illustrate them. It includes a lesson about living that applies to growing children as well as to squirrel monkeys. This true story of squirrel monkeys, in both English and Spanish, stresses the common links between people and a wild animal who strives to become brave. While everything in the book actually happens, having the young squirrel monkey narrate it from his point of view exaggerates his thoughts, reactions, and ambitions, make it somewhat fictional. A narrator of their age, fears, actions, and hopes makes it more appealing to children; it makes the moral more convincing. Why do I write children's wildlife books? I have always been a teacher endeavoring to interest students in how to think and how to create. I have been promoting conservation in a variety of ways. My high school students and I created stories that we used to interact with those in kindergarten and first grade. Those students greeted me warmly when they reached high school and began initiating projects of their own. Why wildlife? I have been photographing birds, sloths, and other wildlife since 1992, when I took the Rainforest Workshop for Teachers, led by the famous guide and biologist Charlie Gomez. After that I took many birding Borderland Tours with Charlie Gomez and Rick Taylor. When I decided to see other parts of Costa Rica, I found Luis Barrantes of LUBARO. Luis is a fantastic driver, guide, and photographer, who has taken me on several trips each year, finding a number of little-known spots for wildlife, and having varied experiences with different wildlife during distinct seasons. I have taken thousands of photographs of any wildlife we encounter. I had to use my wildlife photographs and teaching experience to introduce children to species found in Costa Rica, educating them about the importance of wildlife conservation.

Book Synopsis Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs by : Jean-Paul G. POTET
Download or read book Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs written by Jean-Paul G. POTET and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a provisional essay, followed by a vocabulary and an index, on the Tagalogs' world view in the Sixteenth Century. It is mainly based on the entries of the earliest dictionaries of the Tagalog language. These were written by Spanish lexicographers about half-a-century after the conquest of the Philippines (Cebu 1565, Manila 1571). Additional data are drawn from Spanish chronicles. Many of the recorded beliefs and customs were already obsolete at the turn of the Seventeenth Century. Some are extremely surprising, starting from the primeval myth according to which the world had no solid land at its beginning, but only two fluids, water and air.
Book Synopsis From Math Teacher to Mystic by : Kelley Baeza
Download or read book From Math Teacher to Mystic written by Kelley Baeza and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mesmerizing and inspiring memoir describes many profound and unbelievable experiences of the author, Kelley Baeza, as well as her struggle as a high school mathematics teacher, to understand and to integrate the extraordinary phenomena. Months after abandoning a PhD dissertation and beginning an Ashtanga yoga practice in 2007, mystical and psychic phenomena began. With no religious or spiritual background to view the extraordinary experiences, Kelley was continuously wondering if she was making them up or going crazy. She embarked on a quest to learn about awakening and spirituality to try to understand what was happening as premonitions, out-of-body experiences, plant spirit communications, seeing and hearing Divine Masters and other spiritually transformative events occurred. In From Math Teacher to Mystic, Kelley shares numerous spiritual experiences including a premonition that resulted in her saving a drowning child, a spontaneous healing of chronic pain from an auto accident, accounts with thousands of dollars materializing, and being enveloped in the sensation of being loved and taken care of. Ultimately, the plethora of these experiences along with the wisdom gained from many trips to India, retreats, spiritual teachers, meditations and books, quieted her mind. Trust and faith developed in the Universal Intelligence guiding her and led her to the discovery of a life filled with inner peace, calm and contentedness even in challenging times. The author states: “I want my readers to be • inspired, • encouraged, • uplifted, • entertained, • and determined to build their own connection. Others will be • reminded of their experiences/synchronicities, • curious to learn more, • and optimistic that life in a peaceful state is possible. My hope is that From Math Teacher to Mystic brings my readers joy, causing them to smile throughout their being.”.

Book Synopsis Peripheral Transmodernities by : Ignacio López-Calvo
Download or read book Peripheral Transmodernities written by Ignacio López-Calvo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays dealing with the critical dialogue between the cultural production of the Hispanic/Latino world and that of the so-called Orient or the Orient itself, including the Asian and Arab worlds. As we see in these essays, the Europeans’ cultural others (peripheral nations and former colonies) have established an intercultural and intercontinental dialogue among themselves, without feeling the need to resort to the center-metropolis’ mediation. These South-to-South dialogues tend not to be as asymmetric as the old dialogue between the (former) metropolis (the hegemonic, Eurocentric center) and the colonies. These essays about Hispanic and Latino cultural production (most of them dealing with literature, but some covering urban art, music, and film) provide vivid examples of de-colonizing impetus and cultural resistance. In some of them, we can find peripheral subjectivities’ perception of other peripheral, racialized, and (post)colonial subjects and their cultures.

Book Synopsis The Drunken Monkey by : Robert Dudley
Download or read book The Drunken Monkey written by Robert Dudley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcoholism, as opposed to the safe consumption of alcohol, remains a major public health issue. In this accessible book, Robert Dudley presents an intriguing evolutionary interpretation to explain the persistence of alcohol-related problems. Providing a deep-time, interdisciplinary perspective on today’s patterns of alcohol consumption and abuse, Dudley traces the link between the fruit-eating behavior of arboreal primates and the evolution of the sensory skills required to identify ripe and fermented fruits that contain sugar and low levels of alcohol. In addition to introducing this new theory of the relationship of humans to alcohol, the book discusses the supporting research, implications of the hypothesis, and the medical and social impacts of alcoholism. The Drunken Monkey is designed for interested readers, scholars, and students in comparative and evolutionary biology, biological anthropology, medicine, and public health.
Download or read book Year of the Monkey written by Patti Smith and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids and M Train, a profound, beautifully realized memoir in which dreams and reality are vividly woven into a tapestry of one transformative year. Following a run of New Year's concerts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore, Patti Smith finds herself tramping the coast of Santa Cruz, about to embark on a year of solitary wandering. Unfettered by logic or time, she draws us into her private wonderland with no design, yet heeding signs--including a talking sign that looms above her, prodding and sparring like the Cheshire Cat. In February, a surreal lunar year begins, bringing with it unexpected turns, heightened mischief, and inescapable sorrow. In a stranger's words, "Anything is possible: after all, it's the Year of the Monkey." For Smith--inveterately curious, always exploring, tracking thoughts, writing--the year evolves as one of reckoning with the changes in life's gyre: with loss, aging, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America. Smith melds the western landscape with her own dreamscape. Taking us from California to the Arizona desert; to a Kentucky farm as the amanuensis of a friend in crisis; to the hospital room of a valued mentor; and by turns to remembered and imagined places, this haunting memoir blends fact and fiction with poetic mastery. The unexpected happens; grief and disillusionment set in. But as Smith heads toward a new decade in her own life, she offers this balm to the reader: her wisdom, wit, gimlet eye, and above all, a rugged hope for a better world. Riveting, elegant, often humorous, illustrated by Smith's signature Polaroids, Year of the Monkey is a moving and original work, a touchstone for our turbulent times.
