Book excerpt: Schiff bases, originally introduced by German chemist Hugo Schiff in 1864, are well-known imine or azomethine (RR’C=NR”) moieties prepared from aldehydes and primary amines through condensation. Since then, Schiff bases have been recognized not only as compounds but also as useful ligands for metal complexes in inorganic coordination chemistry. This is because Schiff bases are essentially Lewis bases having lone pairs on the nitrogen (N) atom (M:N=CHR). In both organic and coordination chemistry, as well as related fields of science, the functions of Schiff base complexes and materials are of great interest. This book introduces and discusses novel aspects of Schiff base compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One Schiff base ligand, bis(N,N-2-hyroxypropylenediaminesalicylaldimine), and its metal complexes were synthesized and characterized in this research. The synthesis was achieved by the condensation of salicylaldehyde with the amine group of 1,3- diamino-2-propanol in methanol. The mononuclear and dinuclear complexes from Schiff base with tradition metals Cu(Il) and Ni(II) were prepared by refluxing in ethanol. Detailed structural characterization of the ligand and its complexes was performed through NMR, magnetic susceptibility, UV-Vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and Xray structure analysis. At room temperature, the effective magnetic moment of mononuclear Cu(ll) complexes is 1.82BM confirming the presence of one unpaired electron. It is distorted tetrahedral geometry and paramagnetic. The mononuclear Ni(Il) complex possesses the effective magnetic moment, [mu][subscript eff], 3.18BM which shows the presence of two unpaired electrons and paramagnetism. The magnetic properties are explained with a modified Bleaney-Bowers equation. This suggests a strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between two copper atoms in a dimeric complex. It was found through the X-ray structure analysis that the mononuclear Cu(II) complex possesses the triclinic lattice type and P-1 space group. The unit cell parameters are a= 7 .823(4)Å; b = 9.688(5)Å; c = 10. 715( 6 )Å; [alpha]= 91.56(1)°; [Beta]= 104.40(1)° ; and [gamma]= 95.53(1)°. The crystal system of dinuclear Cu(II) complex is a monoclinic lattice type and P21/c space group. The unit cell parameters are a= 18.084(2)Å; b = 20.869(2)Å; c = 9.894(1)Å; and [Beta] = 95.437(2)°"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The work presented concerns the preparation, characterization and biological evaluation of Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of Schiff bases derived from amoxycillin, cephalexin, sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim, and salicylalde-hyde and pyridoxal. In these complexes an amino group available in the drug substances was allowed to react with salicylaldehyde and pyridoxal hydrochloride, separately, to obtain Schiff bases which were, subsequently, reacted with Cu(CH3COO)2. H2O and/or Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O to form Schiff base metal complexes. The ligands and the complexes were characterized by microanalytical, thermogravimetric, magnetic and spectroscopic data. The geometry of the Zn(II) complexes appears to be simple square-pyramidal or octahedral. All the compounds under investigation possess antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity showed the following trend: Cu(II)-complexes > Zn(II)-complexes > Schiff base ligands > parent xxvi drugs. The Cu(II)-complexes with the Schiff bases derived from cephalexin showed substantially enhanced activity against P. aeruginosa as compared with the parent drug.

Book excerpt: The use of Schiff bases as ligands has enjoyed a very rich history with importance of metal complexes in a variety of industrial and biological applications. Stereochemical flexibility is well documented among Schiff-base complexes arising from central metal, the source of the carbonyl function, the amine, as well as substituents on and steric bulkiness around the Schiff base. Schiff bases accommodate different metals with various coordination modes allowing synthesis of stable complexes with varied stereochemistry. Numerous Schiff bases and their transition metal complexes have been investigated by various techniques for different purposes. Schiff-base metal complexes have been widely studied because they have industrial, antifungal and biological applications. Chelating ligands containing O and N donor atoms show broad biological activity and are of special interest because of the variety of ways in which they are bonded to metal ions.

Book excerpt: Transition metals of 3d series are of immense importance due to their role in biological activity. A number of 3d metals are generally toxic in nature. For example cu having concentration more than 10-9 gm is toxic, it has been observed the toxicity of metal complexes can be reduced by the formation of their transition metal complexes. Keeping above fact in mind a novel route detected for the synthesis of Schiff bases of 3d metal series with 4-chloro benzaldehyde with 2-amino (4-ethoxy phenyl oxazole. The characterization of ligand as well as their metal complexes has been made on the basis of elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurement, Infrared spectra and magnetic moment data.

Book excerpt: Applications Transition metal complexes of acylhydrazones and related N, O donor Schiff bases and their metal complexes have attracted considerable attention during recent years because of their applications in several bio-chemical, industrial and analytical processes. Some of the applications of these compounds are mentioned below: As biological probes As optical devices As catalyst Mesogenic behavior As sensing material As DNA cleaving agents Super oxide dismutase-mimic activity In analytical processes Other uses The hydrazones have been used as plasticizers and stabilizers for polymers [Kuhn et al. (2001), Gupta et al. (2007)], polymerization initiators and antioxidants etc. Hydrazone compounds have the ability to control the release of volatile aldehydes and ketones [Levrand et al. (2006)]. The phenyl derivative Schiff bases have been used as corrosion inhibitors for aluminium in hydrochloric solution [Unaleroglu et al. (2001)]. It is apparent from the above applications that the selected field of transition metal complexes of N, O donor ligands is very useful and multi-dimensional. Each new ligand/ new complex or new study gives a new direction to the area of research.
