Strict health and safety protocols allow the majority of Europeans (67%) to feel safe and relaxed enough to enjoy their trip. The project “Monitoring Sentiment for Domestic and Intra-European Travel” gauges the sentiment, drivers and behaviours for domestic and intra-European travel in ten high-volume European source markets - Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Poland and Austria. Key findings and recommendations for destinations and tourism authorities will be made available in six monthly reports starting in September 2020. The project is realised with the support of MINDHAUS."

The impact of the global health crisis is becoming clear with European tourism growth expected to remain below 2019 levels until 2023. During the first four months of the year, Europe saw a dramatic 44% decline in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2019, a decrease in line with global performance[1]. Tourism jobs losses in Europe in 2020 could be monumental, ranging between 14.2mn to 29.5mn[2]. Uncertainty still dominates and the duration of pandemic restrictions will be key to determine the losses in the sector. Ahead of the summer season, tourism businesses are resuming activities and destinations across Europe are gradually re-opening their borders[3], establishing travel bubbles/blocks and boosting domestic and intra-European travel. The pace of recovery by destination will vary and will depend on the extent to which they rely on international source markets and the revival of consumer confidence.

'Slow travel' provides such a concept, drawing on ideas from the 'slow food' movement with a concern for locality, ecology and quality of life. The aim of this book is to define slow travel and to discuss how some underlining values are likely to pervade new forms of sustainable development. It also aims to provide insights into the travel experience; these are explored in several chapters which bring new knowledge about sustainable transport tourism from across the world. In order to do this the book explores the concept of slow travel and sets out its core ingredients, comparing it with related frameworks such as low-carbon tourism and sustainable tourism development. The authors explain slow travel as holiday travel where air and car transport is rejected in favour of more environmentally benign forms of overland transport, which generally take much longer and become incorporated as part of the holiday experience.
