Book excerpt: Potential effects of wind farms on harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) have been well studied in the southern North Sea. However, there is uncertainty over the impacts on porpoises when in different habitats or when exposed to different construction methods. Construction of the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm (BOWL) site in the North East of Scotland began on 2nd April 2017. From April to December 2017 344 piles were driven into the seabed as foundations for 84 turbine jackets and two Offshore Tranformer Modules. This study aims to assess the responses of harbour porpoises to pile driving in the Moray Firth for the first phase of construction (April to May 2017). A Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) monitoring programme was designed using deployments of passive acoustic monitoring (C-PODs) in two 25km x 25km blocks, one impact and one control block. Changes in harbour porpoise occurrence (Detection Positive Hours, DPH) were investigated during this phase. Results showed that porpoise detections were reduced by 66.7% in the impact block and 25.7% in the control block between the 'before' and 'during' periods. There was a significant difference between the impact and control block, with a higher overall detection of porpoises in the control block throughout the first phase of construction. Baseline data from previous years show that seasonal trends also dominated porpoise occurrence, even during pile driving. At a finer temporal scale, on the first day of piling the occurrence of harbour porpoises increased as distance from the piling source increased. This suggests that harbour porpoises may have displayed a short-term displacement response close to the construction site. Further studies suggest that harbour porpoise did respond to vessels in the construction site. Thus, results highlight the importance of monitoring harbour porpoises during the increasing number of offshore developments in British Waters.

Book excerpt: Two groups of animals, bats and odontocetes (toothed whales), have independently developed the ability to orient and detect prey by biosonar (echolocation). This active mechanism of orientation allows these animals to operate under low light conditions. Biosonar is a conceptual overview of what is known about biosonar in bats and odontocetes. Chapters are written by bat and odontocetes experts, resulting in collaborations that not only examine data on both animals, but also compare and contrast mechanisms. This book provides a unique insight that will help improve our understanding of biosonar in both animal groups.

Book excerpt: Since technological progress is characterized by the dual effects, positive and negative, it is precisely by sustaining the balance between such binaries that ecologically responsible resource management is restored as a solution for excessive human impact on the environment. Sound and music became relevant from the perspective of management, within the meaning of controlling their negative effects on human beings and their environment as well as utilizing them for meeting human needs. This book integrates the fields of technology, humanities, and social sciences and defines the challenges of noise control from the perspective of acoustic ecology. It discusses the concept of acoustic ecology applied to evoke sound and music management and design solutions for well-being. It will be equally useful for students of electrical engineering, music, and economics; equally challenging to those with a particular prior knowledge and practice; and as much as comprehensive and stimulative for those who are barely embarking upon a new adventure.

Book excerpt: This title brings to light the discoveries and insights into the lives of many marine species made possible over the last decade by passive acoustic recorders (PAR). Pop-ups, ARF, HARP, EAR, Bprobe, C-POD Atag, and Dtag are the acronyms of some of the many PARs that have changed our understanding of how marine animals live and strive in the ocean. Various types of PARs are used by different investigators in different areas of the world. These recorders have accumulated copious amounts of very important data, unveiling previously unknown information about large marine animals. Temporal, seasonal and spatial distribution patterns have been uncovered for many marine species. There have been many discoveries, new understandings and insights into how these animals live in and utilize the ocean and the importance of acoustics in their lives. Listening Within the Ocean summarizes these important discoveries, providing both a valuable resource for researchers and enjoyable reading for non-professionals interested in marine life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the past, present and future generation and use of electricity. While noting the importance of electricity to the well-being of people, it argues that all means of electricity generation have adverse ecological consequences. The ecological effects of all the main forms of electricity generation, storage and transmission are reviewed in 14 chapters. The chapters briefly cover the engineering and physics of each method of electricity generation followed by a description of the different ways in which the technology interacts with the natural world. Finally, sections consider the importance of these impacts and how they can be mitigated or avoided. A final chapter summarizes the issues and emphasizes that the only way to truly minimize the impacts of electricity generation is to reduce our consumption and transmission. Future efforts should continue to focus on increasing the efficiency of light production, refrigeration, electrical appliances and batteries.

Book excerpt: At present and over the next few years, large-scale windfarms are being installed far off the coast of Germany in the North and Baltic Sea, making a major contribution to electricity generation from renewable energy sources. One of the German government’s aims is to ensure the environmentally sound and sustainable development of offshore wind energy. Germany’s first offshore test site, alpha ventus, was therefore accompanied from the construction phase to the first years of operation by an intensive environmental research programme, the StUKplus project, financed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and coordinated by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Marine and ecological aspects have been researched there for more than five years to improve the level of knowledge about the ecological impacts of offshore windfarms. This book provides a broad, richly illustrated overview of applied and new research methods and monitoring techniques. It summarises the key research findings on the impacts on benthic communities, fish, marine mammals and birds, also taking into account underwater sound and sediment measurements. Interpreting the results in the sense of lessons learned, new challenges and perspectives are discussed for future sustainable offshore development in German waters.

Book excerpt: Containing papers presented at the Third International Conference on Physical Coastal Processes, Management and Engineering, this book examines coastal zone dynamics, which involve complex interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, and land. Management of coastal zones is dependent on a number of factors. Large temporal and spatial differences in air-sea exchange processes and wind strength and direction result from the complex interactions referred to above. Recreational and tourism activities make demands on coastal areas. With the number and frequency of extreme events due increases with climate change, their role in changing coastal zones also needs to be considered. The book considers also of these and covers such topics as: Wave modelling; Hydrodynamic modelling; Effects of climate change in coastal zones; Coastal defences; Energy recovery; Sediment transport and erosion; Pollution and water quality; Planning and beach design; Coastal morphology; Coastal processes and navigation; Coastal processes and GIS; Bio-physical coastal processes; Remote sensing; Systems approach; Coastal zone management; Impact and recovery from tsunamis; Impact of storms and extreme events; Ecosystems modelling; Coastal lagoons; Coastal oceanography; Socio-environmental issues.
