Book excerpt: Taffy Douglas, the real bitch in charge, is the mama of three sexy, smart, and highly creative daughters who use their "skills" through internet video porn to make paper. Chyna, Karrine, and Simone have a hands-off approach when it comes to men. They prefer to handle their business with high-dollar ballers who are willing to pay up for a sneak peek at the sisters from the other side. Captain save-a-ho is not Taffy's profession; kickin' ass and savin' some for later is. So, all bets are off when Taffy's money-makin' daughters refuse to play by her rules. The chips must fall where they may. When the secretive man in Chyna's life finds himself down on bended knee to propose, will she accept, knowing that Mama ain't down with it? Sassy Simone will meet her match, but he comes in the form of a stalker who terrorizes her through the internet. She's definitely afraid, but not as afraid as Karrine, who catches a bullet in her back for seeking the real truth about family secrets that have been buried for years. These money-makin' mamas will have to hold on tight, because they are in for one wild ride.

Many of Mama’s lifelong secrets will be revealed, too, and when more people discover that she is the mastermind behind the empire Honey has successfully operated for years, plenty of heads will roll and more dead bodies will hit the streets. Mama becomes a real force to be reckoned with, but even she can be brought down. Someone close to her is plotting to do it, and unfortunately, seeking revenge may leave one of these bad divas clinging to life or living a life sentence in prison, where many believe they belong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hers is the show business saga you think you already know--but you ain't seen nothin' yet. Rose Thompson Hovick, mother of June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee, went down in theatrical history as "The Stage Mother from Hell" after her immortalization on Broadway in Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Yet the musical was 75 percent fictionalized by playwright Arthur Laurents and condensed for the stage. Rose's full story is even more striking. Born fearless on the North Dakota prairie in 1891, Rose Thompson had a kind father and a gallivanting mother who sold lacy finery to prostitutes. She became an unhappy teenage bride whose marriage yielded two entrancing daughters, Louise and June. When June was discovered to be a child prodigy in ballet, capable of dancing en pointe by the age of three, Rose, without benefit of any theatrical training, set out to create onstage opportunities for her magical baby girl--and succeeded. Rose followed her own star and created two more in dramatic and colorful style: "Baby June" became a child headliner in vaudeville, and Louise grew up to be the well-known burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. The rest of Mama Rose's remarkable story included love affairs with both men and women, the operation of a "lesbian pick-up joint" where she sold homemade bathtub gin, wild attempts to extort money from Gypsy and June, two stints as a chicken farmer, and three allegations of cold-blooded murder--all of which was deemed unfit for the script of Gypsy. Here, at last, is the rollicking, wild saga that never made it to the stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long accustomed to writing in the tradition of the flamboyant kabuki, Japanese dramatists had a more difficult struggle in modernizing their art than did writers of fiction and poetry. The work of Kishida Kunio, however, established and matured modern Japanese drama, modeled on the western psychological drama of Ibsen and Chekhov. J. Thomas Rimer traces the initial modernization efforts undertaken by the first generation of Japanese playwrights of the shingeki, or "New Theatre.'" His study then concentrates on the work of Kishida Kunio, the most important figure in the Japanese theatre of the 1930s and 1940s. Kishida, who studied with the well-known French director Jacques Copeau in 1921, returned to Japan with the goal of establishing a modern drama of psychological dimensions for the Japanese theatre. His work demonstrated his talent as a playwright and laid the foundation for later modern Japanese playwrights. Originally published in 1974. Book excerpt: Everythings Bigger in Texas! That saying held true when Charles Bubba Smith was born in a little town outside Beaumont and grew to be 68, 300 pounds with the physique of a gladiator. BIG BUBBA contains the colorful, candid memoirs of Bubba Smiths life, the life of a man who reached super-stardom as an NFL legend and then went on to enjoy a prolific career in commercials, TV, and movies -- most notably as the endearing giant of a police cadet, Moses Hightower, in the successful Police Academy movies. From humble beginnings, he grew up under the strict guidance of his football coach father and his loving mother, a woman who went from chopping cotton to earning a doctorate. BIG BUBBA runs the gamut of emotions from jaw-dropping shock to laugh-out-loud humor and heart-warming stories involving family, friends, and other players and actors. These memoirs, told in his later years, reveal stories and details Bubba had never before revealed, since he said he wanted to Put it all out on Front Street, one of Bubbas favorite expressions. You might be shocked, you may laugh or cry, but you will certainly be entertained by these memories of a man who lived his life on a level above most of us. At a memorial to Bubba, Gene Washington, a fellow MSU teammate, quoted a line from a poem often read to them by their coach.Be the best of whatever you are. Gene then closed with, Bubba was the best.

Book excerpt: The seemingly never-ending Cabinda War (1975—) has left multitudes dead in its wake and thousands of children homeless and orphaned. Jackaleena N’denga, a young Angolan girl, has become the sole survivor of one specifically brutal village massacre carried out by a band of guerrilla boy-soldiers. Jackaleena’s resilience leads her to an orphanage on the west coast of Africa, known as Benguela by the Sea, where she and other children are taken in and protected. Her brilliant mind and endless questions capture the heart of her mentor, Margaret, who ensures her that her survival thus far—especially being the only survivor from her village—must mean she has big things ahead of her. When the opportunity arises, she must find her purpose. Not without a plan, Jackaleena stows away on a mercy ship that has made its yearly visit to the orphanage and is now preparing to return to America. Her journey takes her across the ocean, into the arms of New York City's customs officials, and finally into placement in a temporary foster home in Texas. Enter Alfie Carter—a workaholic, small-town detective who is also battling memories of his past. His life is forever changed when he meets a young African girl looking for her higher purpose.

Book excerpt: Best known as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise™ and captain of the Starship Excelsior, George Takei is beloved by millions as part of the command team that has taken audiences to new vistas of adventure in Star Trek®—the unprecedented television and feature film phenomenon. From the program’s birth in the changing world of the 1960s and death at the hands of the network to its rebirth in the hearts and minds of loyal fans, the Star Trek story has blazed its own path into our recent cultural history, leading to a series of blockbuster feature films and three new versions of Star Trek for television. The Star Trek story is one of boundless hope and crushing disappointment, wrenching rivalries and incredible achievements. It is also the story of how, after nearly thirty years, the cast of characters from a unique but poorly rated television show have come to be known to millions of Americans and people around the world as family. For George Takei, the Star Trek adventure is intertwined with his personal odyssey through adversity in which four-year-old George and his family were forced by the United States government into internment camps during World War II. Star Trek means much more to George Takei than an extraordinary career that has spanned thirty years. For an American whose ideals faced such a severe test, Star Trek represents a shining embodiment of the American Dream—the promise of an optimistic future in which people from all over the world contribute to a common destiny.
