Modern commerce is largely dependent upon paper Signs of wealth; and now gold is only employed to a limited extent in the exchange of goods. Gold panics are, therefore, growing rarer and slighter, decade after decade, simply because people know better than ever before the distinction between wealth and the counters or symbols of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem Solved, Without Either Socialism or Capitalism: The Coming Golden Age, an Outgrowth of Remedying Rather Than Abandoning Our Industrial System The State would merely institute those changes needed to enforce a normal circula tion of money and a normal use of wealth; and the people would do the rest, in the ordi nary way of evolution. In every vocation, great changes would be made by its own mem bers, readjusting their affairs to suit the trend to normal conditions that would follow. It would incur no hardship, being like a removal from cramped to commodious quarters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Social Problems: Edited With an Introduction In the long run the basic social problem is that of population. Economically the most fundamental relation is that between man and natural resources. The laws governing that relation must be understood and reckoned with first of all, in theories of social progress or in plans for the lasting improvement of the condi tion of the people. If these natural laws, whatever they may be, are not taken into consideration, every plan and ideal for human betterment runs the risk of impracticability, or else of being brought to naught even after it has seemingly realized its pur pose. The nature of natural resources sets a limit, albeit an elastic one, to man's productivity - a limit which may be at a given time and place so highly elastic or so far in the future that it does not seem a reality, but at another place or time may prove to be a very present fact. No principle of economic science is better established than that sooner or later with in creasing population the law of diminishing returns will assert itself in a way that will demand changes in economic, social, and political policies, if the average material well-being of a people is not to be brought to a standstill or actually to go backward. Moreover, a certain level of material wealth is a pre requisite to even a moderate development of the cultural and spiritual content of life. Failure or unwillingness, therefore, to consider the limitation placed upon the material basis of progress by a strictly limited supply of land, and the increasing difficulty of securing the food, raw materials, and power requisite to the needs of an expanding population, can be attributed only to ingrained preconception and prejudice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems: A Study of Present-Day Social Conditions The aim in this work is not to make original contributions to the subjects discussed, but rather to collect the available material on these subjects and arrange it in such form that it may be used advantageously as a basis for study in the classroom. The work is intended primarily for beginners in the field of social studies - for those who may desire a better understanding of present-day social questions. It deals largely with facts and with an analysis of conditions. Pure theory is kept in the background as much as possible in the thought that the more abstruse theoretical questions should be left for more advanced courses. The effort has been made to present the matter in as clear and in as impartial a manner as is possible; also care has been taken to give the authority for practically every important statement of fact made. Through the use of the supplementary questions and the references at the end of each chapter, ample material may be found for a college or normal school course on this subject. It is also hoped that the references given and topics suggested will be of assistance to reading circles and study clubs that may wish to pursue such a course of study as is here presented. Although the book deals mainly with the evils, or at least the weaknesses, in our social system, yet it is hoped that a spirit of optimism pervades the work - an optimism based on the knowledge of past achievements in social progress and inspiring us to greater efforts in the future. The trend of education to-day is toward a better understanding of our own times. The past century was characterized by great advance in the physical sciences - in the control of physical forces. The indications arc that the present century may be characterized by great advance in the social sciences - in the control of social forces. Already great movements are under way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Money Problem: Or Our First and Last Great Struggle John defines all the evil that is in the world to be the lust of the esh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Now, was not the tree with its fruit a temptation to these three phases of evil? In the first place, it was seen to be good for food, a temptation to the desire of the esh; and, in the second place, that it was pleasant to the eyes, a temptation to the desire or lust of the eyes; and, thirdly, a tree to be desired to make one wise, a temptation to the pride of life. If a good thing befell the people, the credit belonged to him; if misfortune came, they had sinned by disobedience and idolatry. The Hebrew could not move without being guided by his god, who even giveth his beloved sleep. This attitude has survived in the Puritans to this day, and the long list of evils mentioned in church litanies with the petition: Good Lord, deliver us, furnishes ample testimony that the same attitude still survives elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of the Social Problem Though the public mind is full of the problems of social reform, it is remarkable how little literature, combining trained observation in the social field with reasonable theory, is available for the general reader. The present volume of studies has been brought together with the view of helping to fill this gap, and of indicating, however imperfectly, the sort of work by which it should further be filled. The contributors may claim that they have all attempted to qualify as social students in two definite ways. They all possess prolonged and systematic experience in practical efforts to improve the condition of the poor, and they have all paid careful attention to the methods and principles of social reform. Their studies, written on different occasions, with different purposes, and drawn from different fields of observation, appear, when compared together, to have a single principle at their root. The writers have seen and felt as well as reflected that the individual I member of society is above all things a character and a I will, and that society as a whole is a structure in which will and character "are the blocks with which we build." Among the influences which operate upon the will, they of course take note of some that are due to material or economic conditions.
