Book excerpt: Simulations with the Fund’s GIMF model show that raising government savings in New Zealand permanently by 1 percent of GDP is likely to improve the current account balance by about 1⁄2 percent of GDP. The way government savings are achieved matters for GDP but little for the current account. However, results are sensitive to changes in the risk premium. Fiscally neutral changes in taxes and expenditures can raise output in the long run.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper discusses interactions between external risks and the New Zealand economy. The current set of external risks has the potential to be extremely damaging to New Zealand, but two factors would likely mitigate the economic impact. First, the flexible exchange rate regime is a reliable shock absorber and automatic stabilizer from the perspective of GDP, although it leads to a rebalancing between the domestic and external sectors in the economy. Second, net migration flows can reduce the negative impact of lower external demand under some circumstances, such as a growth slowdown in Australia. Fiscal policy could also offset some of the short-term costs of adjustment. Fiscal policy can provide stimulus at relatively small and manageable cost to the already-low government debt to GDP ratio. Moreover, at the current juncture, fiscal policy might need to provide the bulk of policy support against negative shocks, as monetary policy might be ineffective if has become constrained by an effective lower bound on the monetary policy interest rate.

Book excerpt: The 2015 Article IV Consultation provides an overview of New Zealand's economic development and policies. Tailwinds have supported the economy's strong growth after the global financial crisis. However, the tailwinds have recently waned. Growth peaked at 3.5 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2014, bringing output slightly above potential. The exchange rate depreciation has cushioned some of the impact of the decline in dairy prices. The depreciation has mitigated the impact of the international dairy price decline on farmers' incomes and supported exports of travel and education services. Fiscal policy is also supportive of the economy in the short term, while consolidation is projected to resume in the medium term.

Book excerpt: After a strong post-pandemic recovery, New Zealand has entered a marked, but orderly, policy-induced slowdown. Monetary policy has been appropriately tightened to address the above-target inflation and unsustainably low unemployment rate. The external balance has deteriorated significantly, reflecting the economic overheating of recent years. The housing market continues to correct, and although financial stability risks appear contained, affordability remains a concern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives economic growth in New Zealand? How has New Zealand been impacted by globalization and the financial crisis? What will shape future productivity and competitiveness? In this book, leading economists assemble key data to provide an analytical introduction to the contemporary New Zealand economy. Interpreting key economic indicators over time—gross domestic product and interest rates, population, employment and productivity levels, trade and investment, and government accounts—this examination focuses particularly on two issues: globalization and the rise of the Asian economies during the past 30 years, and the origins and continuing effects of the 2007&–08 global financial crisis. Rich with local data and case studies, this is a clear and concise assessment of the current structure and performance of New Zealand's economy from a historical and global perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-being in New Zealand is generally high, although there is room for improvement in incomes, housing affordability, distribution, water quality and GHG emissions. Economic growth is projected to remain around 21⁄2 per cent. The main risks to the outlook are rising trade restrictions and a housing market correction. Labour market reforms have been initiated to increase wages for the low paid but will need to be implemented cautiously to minimise potential adverse effects. Substantial planned increases in bank capital requirements should reduce the expected costs of financial crises but might reduce economic activity.

The paper also summarizes the impact of the reforms on government revenue and spending patterns, and discusses lessons learned from New Zealand’s experience.

Book excerpt: This paper presents key findings of the Financial System Stability Assessment for New Zealand, including Reports on the Observance of Standards and Codes on Monetary and Financial Policy Transparency, Banking Supervision, and Securities Regulation. The assessment reveals that New Zealand has a profitable and well-functioning financial system, operating in a framework of well-developed financial markets. Short-term risks to stability appear low, given the favorable macroeconomic outlook, and sound and transparent financial policies. Stress tests for systemically important banks show resilience consistent with the sector’s relatively high levels of capital and profits.

Download or read book The New Zealand Economy written by Ralph Lattimore and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives economic growth in New Zealand? How have we been impacted by globalisation and the financial crisis? And what will shape our future productivity and competitiveness? In this book leading economists Ralph Lattimore and Shamubeel Eaqub bring together key data to provide a readable and analytical introduction to the contemporary New Zealand economy. Small and open, the New Zealand economy is frequently buffeted by changing international commodity prices and interest rates as well as shifts in domestic policy. To make sense of our dynamic economy, Lattimore and Eaqub interpret data on key economic indicators over time - GDP and interest rates, population, employment and productivity levels, trade and investment, government accounts. They focus particularly on two issues of key importance to contemporary New Zealand: globalisation and the rise of the Asian economics over the past thirty years; and the origins and continuing effects of the 2007-08 Global Financial Crisis. The New Zealand Economy includes case studies by Professors Gary Hawke and Philip McCann. Rich with local data and case studies, The New Zealand Economy is a clear and concise assessment of the current structure and performance of New Zealand's economy from a historical and global perspective. The book is an ideal supplementary text for undergraduates and MBA students as well as a pocket primer for New Zealanders involved in business and policy.
