The book also reopens the discussion on the "EMS discipline-credibility hypothesis" and the notion of "New EMS", testing both with an original methodology. The conflict between internal and external objectives is made clear and the empirical results show the choices made by the individual countries and the resulting implications. The book is written with an empirical orientation based on a unifying data description framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monetary integration in the EC will continue with the desired hardening of the European Monetary System that is expected to lead to an EC central bank in the 1990s. Why has the European Monetary System been so successful and what role has the Deutsche Bundesbank played in monetary policy and the EMS in Europe? This book gives an assessment of the EMS developments and its stability record, analyzes the impact of German monetary unification and shows how financial market liberalization as well as the EC 1992 project affect the process of Economic and Monetary Union. The progress in the EMS is occuring in a period of both thorough changes in the U.K. and in European East-West relations and global economic changes. The problems of EC monetary union and EC central banking are discussed and questions of the transition phase of monetary policy are raised. The further progress of EMU - including the creation of an EC central bank - is analyzed both theoretically and from a political-economy perspective. Creating a common central bank and an EC currency raises new issues for the consistency of monetary and fiscal policy in Europe, where U.S. experiences provide valuable insights.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Monetary Integration by : Paul de Grauwe
Download or read book The Economics of Monetary Integration written by Paul de Grauwe and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This expositive textbook on monetary integration looks at the costs and benefits of monetary union in Europe. The author examines such topical issues as whether there is a good economic case for countries to have separate currencies, and whether a nation increases its welfare when it abolishes its national currency and adopts the currency of a wider area. This leads naturally to questions concerning the size of an optimal monetary area - should this include the EC, the whole of Europe, or the whole world?" "The first part of the book focuses on complete monetary unions in which a common currency is substituted for national currencies. The second part looks at incomplete monetary unions and analyzes the operation of monetary systems in which national monetary authorities maintain their national currencies but agree to fix their exchange rates. This leads to an analysis of the European Monetary System and also examines the issues relating to the transition to a full monetary system." "The book combines comprehensive exposition with discussion of recent historical events and theory and will prove invaluable to students."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Euro and the Battle of Ideas by : Markus K. Brunnermeier
Download or read book The Euro and the Battle of Ideas written by Markus K. Brunnermeier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How philosophical differences between Eurozone nations led to the Euro crisis—and where to go from here Why is Europe's great monetary endeavor, the Euro, in trouble? A string of economic difficulties in Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and other Eurozone nations has left observers wondering whether the currency union can survive. In this book, Markus Brunnermeier, Harold James, and Jean-Pierre Landau argue that the core problem with the Euro lies in the philosophical differences between the founding countries of the Eurozone, particularly Germany and France. But the authors also show how these seemingly incompatible differences can be reconciled to ensure Europe’s survival. As the authors demonstrate, Germany, a federal state with strong regional governments, saw the Maastricht Treaty, the framework for the Euro, as a set of rules. France, on the other hand, with a more centralized system of government, saw the framework as flexible, to be overseen by governments. The authors discuss how the troubles faced by the Euro have led its member states to focus on national, as opposed to collective, responses, a reaction explained by the resurgence of the battle of economic ideas: rules vs. discretion, liability vs. solidarity, solvency vs. liquidity, austerity vs. stimulus. Weaving together economic analysis and historical reflection, The Euro and the Battle of Ideas provides a forensic investigation and a road map for Europe’s future.
Book Synopsis European Monetary Integration by : Paul J.J. Welfens
Download or read book European Monetary Integration written by Paul J.J. Welfens and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EU monetary integration was reinforced in the 1980s when macroeconomic convergence and a dominant role of the German Bundesbank created the basis for relatively stable exchange rates and increasing EU trade volumes. The analysis here focuses on the EMS crisis of 1992/93, the topic of optimum currency areas and the problem of fiscal policies and regional stabilization in Europe, the US and Canada. This book gives an assessment of the EMS developments and shows how financial market liberalization as well as the EU single market project affect the process of economic and monetary union. The role of currency substitution and problems of the Bundesbank's monetary policy control in a changing international system are evaluated.

Book Synopsis Fiscal Constraints of a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Fiscal Constraints of a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1989-12-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers whether the implementation of a fixed exchange rate regime requires or implies binding constraints on fiscal policy. The main conclusions are that, from a country perspective, the effective constraint is on the degree of monetary financing, which bears an uncertain relationship to the size of the budget deficit; that, from a systemic perspective, the financial stability of the currency area can be ensured by making the monetary and fiscal authorities independent of one another; and that the case for coordination of fiscal policies—whatever its merits—is not enhanced by the creation of a fixed exchange rate regime.
