Book Synopsis The System of Nature by : Paul Henri Thiery
Download or read book The System of Nature written by Paul Henri Thiery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. Paul Henri Thiery, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789), was the center of the radical wing of the philosophers. Holbach wrote, translated, edited, and issued a stream of books and pamphlets, often under other names, that has made him the despair of bibliographers but has connected his name, by innuendo, gossip, and association, with most of what was written in defeense of atheistic materialism in late eighteenth-century France. Holbach is best known for The System of Nature (1770) and deservedly, since it is a clear exposition of his main ideas. His initial position determines all the rest of his argument: 'There is not, there can be nothing out of that Nature which includes all beings.' Conceiving of nature as strictly limited to matter and motion, both of which have always existed, he flatly denies that there is any such thing as spirit or supernatural. This is the third of three volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are now familiar with the Three Age System, the archaeological partitioning of the past into Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. This division, which amounted at the time to a major scientific revolution, was conceived in Denmark in the 1830s. Peter Rowley-Conwy investigates the reasons why the Three Age system was adopted without demur in Scandinavian archaeological circles, yet was the subject of a bitter and long-drawn-out contest in Britain and Ireland, up to the1870s.

Book Synopsis A Portion of His Life by : Eugenie R. Freed

Book excerpt: "The scope of "A Portion of His Life" has deliberately been restricted to a significant aspect of Milton's influence that has not before been seriously considered in Blake criticism: Blake's conception, expressed in poetry and art, of "the female portion," his Miltonic view of woman. Arguing that the female personages who appear in Blake's continuously developing mythic structures in his major works are not "women" in any realistic sense, Freed shows that in his principal representations of femaleness Blake draws repeatedly on certain of Milton's archetypal female personages - notably Eve and Sin of Paradise Lost, Nature in the Hymn on the Nativity of Christ, and the Lady of Comus - and, moreover, that Milton's poetry is often in the most literal sense the materia prima of Blake's." "Freed reviews other philosophical and literary elements comprising Blake's concept of femaleness - his study of the Hebrew Bible and of alchemical treatises, his reading of Spenser and Shakespeare - and considers aspects of Blake's own life that led him to find new dimensions in the life and works of Milton."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
