Esther Wojcicki--"Woj" to her many friends and admirers--is famous for three things: teaching a high school class that has changed the lives of thousands of kids, inspiring Silicon Valley legends like Steve Jobs, and raising three daughters who have each become famously successful. What do these three accomplishments have in common? They're the result of TRICK, Woj's secret to raising successful people: Trust, Respect, Independence, Collaboration, and Kindness. Simple lessons, but the results are radical. Wojcicki's methods are the opposite of helicopter parenting. As we face an epidemic of parental anxiety, Woj is here to say: relax. Talk to infants as if they are adults. Allow teenagers to pick projects that relate to the real world and their own passions, and let them figure out how to complete them. Above all, let your child lead. How to Raise Successful People offers essential lessons for raising, educating, and managing people to their highest potential. Change your parenting, change the world.

A marketing professional and mother to two children, Carter wanted to write a book for other mothers who struggled with work life balance and felt guilty for wanting to further their career. The book features elephants not only because they're intelligent animals known for caring for their young, but also so families from all races can relate to the story. Can Mommy Go To Work? is called a children's book for working moms because Mommy is the main character, not her children. Through the book child readers will see "the other side of the story"- why their moms work so hard and the sacrifices their moms must make. Parents reading the book will feel understood, loved, and appreciated, and will most likely see themselves and their career path in Mommy. Even grandparents will appreciate the nod in Can Mommy Go To Work? to elder family members who help working parents with child care. As the author of Big Hair, Don't Care Crystal Swain-Bates says, there is power in reading about someone like you, and many moms wish they had books and experiences that matched their lives when they were growing up. Can Mommy Go To Work? gives the children of working mothers that book and that experience. It is a quick, easy to read children's book that the whole family can enjoy in the car on the way to school or at night before bedtime. Book excerpt: A retired Wall Street Journal editor and mother compares two generations of women—boomers and GenXers—to examine how each navigates the emotional and professional challenges involved in juggling managerial careers and families. For the first time in American history, a significant number of mothers are heading major corporations, including General Motors, Ulta Beauty, and Best Buy. Over the past several decades, women have made gains throughout executive suites. Yet these “Power Moms” still struggle with balancing their management responsibilities with raising children. Joann S. Lublin draws on the experiences of the nation’s two generations of these successful women to measure how far we’ve come—and how far we still need to go. Lublin combines her own insights with those of eighty-five executive mothers across industries—including experienced public-company chiefs such as Carol Bartz, the first woman to command Autodesk and Yahoo; Hershey’s Michele Buck, DuPont’s Ellen Kullman, ITT’s Denise Ramos, and WW International’s Mindy Grossman—and twenty-five of their grown daughters. Lublin reveals how trailblazer boomers, many now in their sixties, often endured sweeping disapproval for their demanding management careers, even as their own daughters sometimes rejected their choices. While the second wave of executive mothers—all under forty-five—handle working parenthood with less angst, they still lead stressful lives. Power Moms provides lessons and advice to help today’s professional women, their families, and their employers navigate this challenging terrain. Lublin looks at the trade-offs mothers are too often forced to make between work and family and the root causes, including the dearth of large-scale paid parental leave and other family-friendly policies. While it celebrates the gains women have made, Power Moms makes clear how much more must be done to make being a working mother easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people think of Mother Teresa, they think of a saint—a spiritual hero of extraordinary humanitarian accomplishments, a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But Mother Teresa was also the leader of one of the world’s largest and most successful organizations: the Missionaries of Charity. Since founding it in 1948 she has raised millions of dollars and, with over a million volunteers in more than 100 countries, it remains one of the most recognized brands in the world. How did one nun who never received any formal education in business build such an impressive global organization? Frank, realistic, and firmly grounded in practicality, Mother Teresa’s leadership style helped to inspire and organize people across the world. This book shares ten essential leadership principles drawn from Mother Teresa’s example and applies them to today’s business world. Authors Ruma Bose, an entrepreneur who volun- teered with Mother Teresa, and Lou Faust, a leading business expert, are the first to examine her in this light—as a leader whose management style and dedication to a singular vision led to one of the world’s most unlikely success stories. Mother Teresa may have been a saint, but her spectacular success was not a product of divine providence. Her genius was the simplicity of her vision and her dedication to its implementation. It was in the way she treated her people, refusing to distance herself from the everyday work of a typical sister of the Missionaries of Charity. It was in how she handled tough choices—like accepting donations from brutal Haitian dictator François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. These were the principles that made her the great leader of a global organization, and they can be applied by anyone in any organization—no sainthood required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in today’s advanced capitalist societies are encouraged to “lean in.” The media and government champion women’s empowerment. In a cultural climate where women can seemingly have it all, why do so many successful professional women—lawyers, financial managers, teachers, engineers, and others—give up their careers after having children and become stay-at-home mothers? How do they feel about their decision and what do their stories tell us about contemporary society? Heading Home reveals the stark gap between the promise of gender equality and women’s experience of continued injustice. Shani Orgad draws on in-depth, personal, and profoundly ambivalent interviews with highly educated London women who left paid employment to take care of their children while their husbands continued to work in high-powered jobs. Despite identifying the structural forces that maintain gender inequality, these women still struggle to articulate their decisions outside the narrow cultural ideals that devalue motherhood and individualize success and failure. Orgad juxtaposes these stories with media and policy depictions of women, work, and family, detailing how—even as their experiences fly in the face of fantasies of work-life balance and marriage as an egalitarian partnership—these women continue to interpret and judge themselves according to the ideals that are failing them. Rather than calling for women to transform their feelings and behavior, Heading Home argues that we must unmute and amplify women’s desire, disappointment, and rage, and demand social infrastructure that will bring about long-overdue equality both at work and at home.

Book excerpt: An Honest and Revolutionary Guide to the Emotions Moms Feel But Seldom Talk About A few years ago, Dr. Claire Nicogossian began noticing a trend in her therapy room: Mothers are struggling with the challenging and unexpected emotions that surface during their journey through motherhood. In the confines of a safe, judgment-free space, they share about the heavy guilt they carry from losing control and yelling at their children; the crippling fear that they are failing their families; and the exhaustion of juggling work, home, and family. Dr. Claire calls these our shadow emotions. While varying in intensity, our shadow emotions take some form of sadness, anger, fear, embarrassment, or disgust, often a combination. In this breakthrough book, Dr. Claire sheds light on these shadow emotions and provides a path to thriving joy, inner calm, and radiant confidence. Drawing upon her own experiences of raising four children and many years of counseling mothers as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Claire shares practical tips, strategies, and encouragement to help women in all stages of motherhood. By creating new language for the feelings moms experience but seldom talk about—inspired by the groundbreaking work of Carl Jung—this book has the power to create a radical shift in the way we understand and navigate modern motherhood. With Dr. Claire’s guidance, mothers everywhere will discover the deep joy, fulfillment, and inner peace that are already within their reach.

Book excerpt: So many books are coming out today about different ways of running companies. Several of these books envision some historical figure as the CEO: Lincoln, Attila the Hun, Jesus and others. Only one person is CEO to everyone, and that is our mother. Everyone is molded by the teaching of their mother, and taught the same things that they later apply to their business career. I had the pleasure of interviewing many successful people for the book, Don Kirshner, Ken Anderson and Jeff Webb, just to name a few, and found that they all had a lot in common: first they have a passion for what they do; have a purpose to succeed; moved ahead with total determination; but first and foremost they owe their success to the role their mother played in shaping their respective lives. Each chapter of the book is a lesson my mother taught me while I was growing up. They are the same ones all children hear from their own mother. The first part of each chapter tells the story of how I learned one of my own mother's lessons. Most people who read them will see themselves, since all children go through many of the same trials and tribulations. The second part of each chapter relates to a specific individual who used their mother's lessons to be successful in their chosen field. Some are funny, some are sad; but all are about life...and all true. Having interviewed each of these people for the book, I wish I could show the raw emotion on each person's face while relating what their mother meant to their individual success. I hope everyone takes away from this book that success is not easy, but everyone receives the seeds for their success from their mother.

Book excerpt: For Ning Xianyu, her husband meant that they lived together under the same roof. Other than the fact that they occasionally loved each other in front of their elders and outsiders, they were like strangers that she was most familiar with. However... During the menstrual period, her husband bought 'bread' for her, boiled brown sugar water for her as a warm stove. Wandering in a luxury store was looked down by others, and her husband directly drove her out of A-City. He even let her enter the largest plaza of luxury goods, so she could choose from among them. Not an arranged marriage? Didn't they say that he couldn't be humane in a car accident? Who was the man in her bed, demanding too much from her? "If there is one, there is two. If there is one, there is two. If there is one, there is three..." Hubby Xie smiled charmingly and pressed over. Just when Ning Xianyu thought that such a marriage wasn't bad, he suddenly turned into the main culprit behind all of this. "Divorce! Divorce immediately! " She clenched her fists, unable to accept that all of this was a scam.
