As a result he is badly burnt and is left permanently scarred and crippled. However, he is determined to continue to serve his country despite his new disability. Helen Masters is a cool headed nurse, doing all she can to help those affected by the terrifying Blitz that rains down upon Great Britain. When she is mistakenly accused of being a German spy, she is forced to take refuge in the Bahamas and help the cause from afar. Roger is offered a new role in the Bahamas as a doctor at the RAF hospital - a place seemingly undamaged by the war where bomber crews are trained. However, this British colony is a hotbed of Nazi intrigue as a plan is laid to kidnap the Duke of Windsor, who is serving as Governor to the Bahamas, so the British would sue for peace. Recruited by SIS, Roger must act skilfully to deter disaster. With Helen's help, he must ensure that the Duke remains safe and the British war effort is undamaged by this desperate conspiracy. Alastair Davie is a retired corporate publicist for leading US and Canadian corporations. He was born and educated in the UK and worked for the Financial Times and Reuters before moving to the United States in 1976. He combines his fascination for modern history and his creative ability to weave an enthralling story so that the reader learns how historic events affected the ordinary person.

Book excerpt: Dying for a Drink is a true story of the chaos and hurt caused by an alcoholic. The author, telling her own story, writes of time spent in multiple rehabs, both in the United Kingdom and Sydney, Australia. She writes in the hope that her story will encourage other alcoholics and addicts (which can be anybody addicted to anything)—that they will see in their own stories the similarities rather than the differences. The memoir depicts her rapid decline after she crossed the ‘invisible line’ and shows how her loved ones were devastated by her behaviour—and how they lived in fear that this disease would lead to her death. It chronicles, too, her sense of freedom and surrender and hope amid the sobriety from which she is sharing her journey and the beginnings of relationships repaired, with both loved ones and self.

Book excerpt: It is a true story based on 13 years of research: the story of friendship between a Jewish boy, Freddy and his Christian friend, Helmut (who are separated by the political turmoil of the aftermath of the First World War in Germany), who obliged Freddy and Freddy's family to seek refuge in France. It is also the story of friendship between Freddy and George, Freddy's classmate whom Freddy meets in school in Paris. Moreover, it is also the story of Sigmund, whose patriotic blindness impacted his and his family's life; the story of Nellie, who left Germany for Colombia before Nellie's parents sought refuge in France and whose mission would be to reunite the family in a peaceful and friendly country. Furthermore, the novel also emphasises the emotional costs of the First World War and its indirect result on the onset of the Second World War.

Book excerpt: George Aylwin Hogg was a man of remarkable dedication and honour. Though he died in 1945 at the age of thirty, Aylwin’s name and legacy is remembered in China to this day—where as a wise and noble friend to the people of China, he immersed himself in the culture and life of the Chinese people whom he served in his mission. In Blades of Grass: The Story of George Aylwin Hogg, author and nephew of the late Mr Hogg, Mark Aylwin Thomas, explores his uncle’s own letters and writings and shares this astonishing life story of perseverance, service, and dedication. Thomas offers a personal and compelling window into the character of this remarkable man, and Hogg’s own words lend an authentic and distinctive insight into his service—training young Chinese men in their vocations in the remote confines of Northern China in Shandan. George Aylwin Hogg was part of a vision to create a unique form of industrial training on which to base the reconstruction of industry for a new post-war China. While a vignette of Aylwin’s life was portrayed in Roger Spottiswoode’s 2008 film, The Children of Huang Shi, the full picture of this remarkable life—often painted with Aylwin’s own words—shows how this young Englishman’s life was deeply interwoven in the lives of the men and people he served.

Book excerpt: Treasures of Darkness is the book of poems about reality of living and life and God's promise as real as it gets. Not realities God says maybe to Muslims, not now to Buddhists, or no to atheists. Not realities he says yes to sometimes, most times, or once in a while. This book of poems is about human experience, in living all the times. Are there such realities? You bet there are. Storm of life is no respecter of person. Man, woman, transgender, gay, lesbian, rich, poor, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, felons, saints, or heroes, every person faces some unexpected changes, heartbreak, or affliction at some point in their lives. I know how hard it is for so many to face change in life, especially sudden or unexpected storm. But I assure you, this book of poems is not just a spiritual or inspirational book. This is about the human experience where "treasure in the darkness" is available and as real as it gets to everyone—riches in secret place. In the dark, the only thing you can see is light. This is reality, not perception. This book of poems is written to help put things, many times, things you already know in perspective, and show us ways how to cope with self, others, and adversities better by embracing the human experience in every situation. My sincere hope to every reader of Treasure of Darkness is that you will discover, as a mature person, you are not the ones to have answer to everything, but the ones who enter into every situation with purpose. And if you choose to embrace the human experience, discover the purpose and follow the light (the Word), you surely will find your riches hidden in secret place, even in the most despised place, indeed.

While each poem tells its own tale, the anthology paints a larger story of how people fall down rabbit holes of darkness. This sorrow, this arcade of devil dreams, is a desolate landscape, a dystopia of lost souls. But it is not eternal. When these souls find a glimmer of hope, the light they follow guides them out of the darkness in a true testament to what the human spirit can achieve. Please be my guest: delve into these devil dreams with me, and we will come out blazing with our dragon hearts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I read the Bible as an intellectual exercise as well as a spiritual one. I wanted to read about those who walked and talked with God. I wanted to learn about the prophets and writers of accepted sacred scripture. There are many quotes taken from the Bible, and many quotes on the Bible. People are always commenting on God. Atheists are obsessed with God or the lack thereof. There are a lot of thoughts on God out there. Some are captured within this book and their purpose is to raise spiritual awareness in all of us. I was looking to feel the love from God for mankind right from the start when God created man, and man immediately started recreating God. God created us in his image, and we started recreating God through anthropomorphism, or attempting to change his divinity into humanity so we could better understand him. Reading through the New Testament, I found that the number three has divine significance which figured largely in many events in Jesus' life. I devoted a whole chapter to this mystery, and I am still investigating these occurrences of three throughout the Bible. Is this a peek into the divine consciousness? I believe, like a lot of people, that life is a journey. Some believe the end of the journey is death or final peace from the chaos and messes of life no consciousness. For them, there is no God. Others believe the end of the journey is the transition into our final form as spiritual beings when the soul goes over to the afterlife. I believe we all have a purpose and our personal relationship with God throughout our lives reveals it.

How his environment, his family up brining, his circle of friends, how sports developed his mind, despite his small structure, he was awarded state colors for soccer, and then became a National Motor Sport Champion of his country. The size of the man never once entered his mind, playing rugby elevated him to be selected to his high-schools first rugby team, and at that time, Andrew was five feet four inches tall, and one hundred and thirty two pounds. Not one member of his team or others were under 250 pounds in weight. This sports background, and his common sense family surroundings, set him up to climb the business ladder one step at a time. This book is a good read for businessmen, Mr. Average sportsman and everyone else. Robert. M. Santa Barbara
