They have preserved biochemical relicts from the early evolution of eukaryotic cells, which took place during times in Earth history when there was hardly any oxygen avaiable, certainly not enough to breathe. How the anaerobic forms of mitochondria work, in which organisms they occur, and how the eukaryotic anaerobes that possess them fit into the larger picture of rising atmospheric oxygen during Earth history are the topic of this book.

Book excerpt: Enzyme systems that catalyze a coenzyme A- and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-linked oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate and 2-oxoglutarate have been isolated from escherichia coli as highly organized multienzyme complexes with high molecular weights by Koike et al. in 1960, and the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex was further separated into three constituent enzymes by Koike et al. in 1963. The pig heart pyruvate and 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex were isolated in highly purified states as multienzyme units with molecular weights to several million. The objectives of the research are to resolve the pig heart pyruvate and 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complexes into their essential constituent enzymes, to characterize the latter, and to determine the composition and macromolecular structure of these two multienzymes.
