Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Aspects of Bioelectricity describes the self-organization in molecular and cellular networks. This book evaluates the chemical representation of ion flux gating in excitable biomembranes and addresses the theoretical implication of liganding reactions in axonal sodium channel gating. It also strongly demonstrates the ligand interactions of crustacean axonal membrane. The opening chapters deal with the biochemical studies of the structure, mechanism, and differentiation of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel; and biochemical cycle of impedance variation in axonal membranes. The succeeding chapters examine the effect of various compounds on the phosphorylation of nerve proteins and the molecular aspects of the actions of cyclic nucleotides at synapses. These topics are followed by discussions of the acetylcholine and choline acetyltransferase, as well as the polymorphism of cholinesterase in vertebrates. The closing chapters are devoted to the physical factors determining gated flux from and into sealed membrane fragments. The book can provide useful information to biologists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that many years have elapsed since the first microcalorimetric measurements of an action potential were made, there is still among the research workers involved in the study of bioelectrogenesis a complete overlooking of the most fundamental principle governing any biological phenomenon at the molecular scale of dimension. This is surprising, the more so that the techniques of molecular biology are applied to characterize the proteins forming the ionic conducting sites in living membranes. For reasons that are still obscure to us the molecular aspects of bioelectrogenesis are completely out of the scope of the dynamic aspects of biochemistry. Even if it is sometimes recognized that an action potential is a free energy-consuming, entropy-producing process, the next question that should reasonably arise is never taken into consideration. There is indeed a complete evasion of the problem of biochemical energy coupling thus reducing the bioelectrogenesis to only physical interactions of membrane proteins with the electric field: the inbuilt postulate is that no molecular transformations, in the chemical sense, could be involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical and Molecular Basis of Nerve Activity contains 16 chapters that discuss the significant advances in the study of the molecular events underlying bioelectricity and nerve excitability. After briefly describing the physiology and mechanisms of the nervous system, this book goes on examining the physiologically significant features and nerve activity roles of acetylcholines and acetylcholinesterase. A chapter highlights the mechanism of acetylcholinerase inhibition by nerve gases and insecticides. Other chapters explore the characteristic properties of choline acetylase enzyme; the relationships between chemical forces and electrical activity; and the effect of acetylcholine and analog compounds on the isolation of receptor protein and on synaptic junctions. The remaining chapters deal with the essential role of acetylcholine in the generation of bioelectric current and the differences between axonal conduction and synaptic transmission. The supplementary texts look into the progress in the biochemistry of excitability and present an integral model of nerve excitability. This book will be of great benefit to biologists and neurologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-thermal irreversible electroporation is a new minimally invasive surgical p- cedure with unique molecular selectivity attributes – in fact it may be considered the first clinical molecular surgery procedure. Non-thermal irreversible electro- ration is a molecular selective mode of cell ablation that employs brief electrical fields to produce nanoscale defects in the cell membrane, which can lead to cell death, without an effect on any of the other tissue molecules. The electrical fields can be produced through contact by insertion of electrode needles around the undesirable tissue and non-invasively by electromagnetic induction. This new - dition to the medical armamentarium requires the active involvement and is of interest to clinical physicians, medical researchers, mechanical engineers, che- cal engineers, electrical engineers, instrumentation designers, medical companies and many other fields and disciplines that were never exposed in their training to irreversible electroporation or to a similar concept. This edited book is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to the field of irreversible electroporation to those that were not exposed or trained in the field before and can also serve as a reference manual. Irreversible electroporation is broad and interdisciplinary. Therefore, we have made an attempt to cover every one of the various aspects of the field from an introductory basic level to state of the art.
