Dabei kommt es darauf an, auf bewährten Methoden aufzubauen, diese weiterzuentwickeln und wissenschaftlich zu überprüfen. . Für Kinder mit Autismus existiert eine Bandbreite verschiedenster Therapieangebote, die von medikamentöser Behandlung, sensomotorischen Übungen, Musiktherapie bis hin zur Delfin- und Reittherapie reichen. Immer wieder wecken neue Therapien die Hoffnung auf große Erfolge in der Behandlung des Autismus. Derartige Methoden wie die Vitamintherapie, die Festhaltetherapie oder die Gestützte Kommunikation folgen jedoch meist aktuellen Modetrends und sind häufig wissenschaftlich unbegründet. Die empirisch am besten abgesicherte Therapieform für Kinder mit Autismus stellen derzeit verhaltenstherapeutisch orientierte Förderansätze dar, wobei dem Einsatz operanter Techniken eine besondere Bedeutung zukommt. Der erste Wissenschaftler, der sich lerntheoretische Prinzipien zunutze machte, um Kinder mit Autismus speziell zu fördern, war O. Ivar Lovaas. Das von ihm entwickelte intensive verhaltenstherapeutische Frühförderprogramm, das unter dem Namen Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) bekannt wurde, ist vor allem in den USA ein weitverbreitetes Konzept zur Behandlung autistischer Störungen. Die sehr guten Ergebnisse der ersten umfassenden Wirksamkeitsstudie zur ABA-Therapie und deren Nachfolgeuntersuchungen mussten zwar mittlerweile relativiert werden, die generelle Wirksamkeit dieser Therapieform konnte jedoch auch in weiteren Studien bestätigt werden. Dennoch findet die ABA-Therapie in Deutschland bisher nur wenig Verbreitung und stößt häufig auf kritische Reaktionen. Eltern, die sich dazu entscheiden, ihr Kind mit dieser Methode zu fördern, müssen sich meist auf privater Basis in Institutionen anleiten lassen, was mit einem hohen finanziellen und zeitlichen Aufwand verbunden ist. Um mehr Kindern mit Autismus eine Förderung mit ABA zugänglich zu machen, sind weitere Studien notwendig, in denen einerseits empirisch belegt wird, welche Fortschritte mithilfe der Therapie möglich sind und andererseits deutlich wird, dass dies durchaus eine kindgerechte Fördermethode ist. Seine Zwänge werden überwunden und er schafft es, sich einigermaßen in die Gesellschaft einzugliedern, da er aufgrund intensiver Zuneigung anderer Menschen über sein Leben nachdachte und sich doch dazu entschied, freiwillig aus seiner Isolation zu kommen, da es ihm ein persönliches Bedürfnis war. Solche Filme suggerieren, der autistische Mensch hätte eine Entscheidungsgewalt über sein Verhalten.
