Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notes in this volume were written as a part of a Nachdiplom course that I gave at the ETH in the summer semester of 1995. The aim of my lectures was the development of some of the basics of the interaction of homological algebra, or more specifically the cohomology of groups, and modular representation theory. Every time that I had given such a course in the past fifteen years, the choice of the material and the order of presentation of the results have followed more or less the same basic pattern. Such a course began with the fundamentals of group cohomology, and then investigated the structure of cohomology rings, and their maximal ideal spectra. Then the variety of a module was defined and related to actual module structure through the rank variety. Applications followed. The standard approach was used in my University of Essen Lecture Notes [e1] in 1984. Evens [E] and Benson [B2] have written it up in much clearer detail and included it as part of their books on the subject.

General algebra, more specifically non-commutative algebra, is poised for major advances in the twenty-first century (together with and in interaction with combinatorics), just as topology, analysis, and probability experienced in the twentieth centu

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the structure of group algebras of finite groups over fields of characteristic [lowercase italic]p dividing the order of the group, or closely related rings such as rings of algebraic integers and in particular their [lowercase italic]p-adic completions, as well as modules and homomorphisms between them, or such group algebras. Our principal aim has been to present some of the more recent ideas which have enriched and improved this theory. This text is not restricted to particular methods, be they ring theoretic or character theoretic, while presenting approaches or proofs which are distinguished by being fast, elegant, illuminating, with potential for further advancement, or all of these at the same time. This text hopes to attract non-specialists, perhaps algebraic topologists and group theorists who might use the tools of modular representations more frequently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1898 Frobenius discovered a construction which, in present terminology, associates with every module of a subgroup the induced module of a group. This construction proved to be of fundamental importance and is one of the basic tools in the entire theory of group representations. This monograph is designed for research mathematicians and advanced graduate students and gives a picture of the general theory of induced modules as it exists at present. Much of the material has until now been available only in research articles. The approach is not intended to be encyclopedic, rather each topic is considered in sufficient depth that the reader may obtain a clear idea of the major results in the area. After establishing algebraic preliminaries, the general facts about induced modules are provided, as well as some of their formal properties, annihilators and applications. The remaining chapters include detailed information on the process of induction from normal subgroups, projective summands of induced modules, some basic results of the Green theory with refinements and extensions, simple induction and restriction pairs and permutation modules. The final chapter is based exclusively on the work of Weiss, presenting a number of applications to the isomorphism problem for group rings.

Book excerpt: Module theory over commutative asociative rings is usually extended to noncommutative associative rings by introducing the category of left (or right) modules. An alternative to this procedure is suggested by considering bimodules. A refined module theory for associative rings is used to investigate the bimodule structure of arbitary algebras and group actions on these algebras.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a fully self-contained introduction to the modular representation theory of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the symmetric groups and of the $q$-Schur algebras. The study of these algebras was pioneered by Dipper and James in a series of landmark papers. The primary goal of the book is to classify the blocks and the simple modules of both algebras. The final chapter contains a survey of recent advances and open problems. The main results are proved by showing that the Iwahori-Hecke algebras and $q$-Schur algebras are cellular algebras (in the sense of Graham and Lehrer). This is proved by exhibiting natural bases of both algebras which are indexed by pairs of standard and semistandard tableaux respectively. Using the machinery of cellular algebras, which is developed in chapter 2, this results in a clean and elegant classification of the irreducible representations of both algebras. The block theory is approached by first proving an analogue of the Jantzen sum formula for the $q$-Schur algebras. This book is the first of its kind covering the topic. It offers a substantially simplified treatment of the original proofs. The book is a solid reference source for experts. It will also serve as a good introduction to students and beginning researchers since each chapter contains exercises and there is an appendix containing a quick development of the representation theory of algebras. A second appendix gives tables of decomposition numbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook treats Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representations in an elementary but fully rigorous fashion requiring minimal prerequisites. In particular, the theory of matrix Lie groups and their Lie algebras is developed using only linear algebra, and more motivation and intuition for proofs is provided than in most classic texts on the subject. In addition to its accessible treatment of the basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, the book is also noteworthy for including: a treatment of the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff formula and its use in place of the Frobenius theorem to establish deeper results about the relationship between Lie groups and Lie algebras motivation for the machinery of roots, weights and the Weyl group via a concrete and detailed exposition of the representation theory of sl(3;C) an unconventional definition of semisimplicity that allows for a rapid development of the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras a self-contained construction of the representations of compact groups, independent of Lie-algebraic arguments The second edition of Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Representations contains many substantial improvements and additions, among them: an entirely new part devoted to the structure and representation theory of compact Lie groups; a complete derivation of the main properties of root systems; the construction of finite-dimensional representations of semisimple Lie algebras has been elaborated; a treatment of universal enveloping algebras, including a proof of the Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt theorem and the existence of Verma modules; complete proofs of the Weyl character formula, the Weyl dimension formula and the Kostant multiplicity formula. Review of the first edition: This is an excellent book. It deserves to, and undoubtedly will, become the standard text for early graduate courses in Lie group theory ... an important addition to the textbook literature ... it is highly recommended. — The Mathematical Gazette

Book excerpt: In this book we analyse unit groups of group algebras KG for non-abelian p-groups G and fields K of characteristic p. By calculating the core and the normaliser of U in 1 + rad(KG) – the group of normalized units -- for every subgroup U of G, we generalise results of K.R. Pearson and D.B. Coleman using fixed points of enhanced group actions. Our concept of so-called end-commutable ordering leads to a new method of studying the center of 1 + rad(KG). We proof that a finite group G is nilpotent if and only if every conjugacy class possesses an end-commutable ordering. As a simple consequence we get a result of A.A. Bovdi and Z. Patay, which shows how the exponent of the center of 1 + rad(KG) can be determined by calculations purely within the group G. We describe the groups for which this exponent is extremal and calculate the exponent for various group classes (e.g. regular groups, special groups, Sylow subgroups of linear and symmetric groups) and group constructions (e.g. wreath products, central products, special group extensions, isoclinic groups). Another application of our concept of end-commutable ordering is a description of the invariants of the center of 1 + rad(KG) for a finite field K. They are determined purely by the group G and the field K and can be visualized by a special graph – the class-graph. As a consequence of our results we prove that the center, the derived subgroups and the p-th-power subgroup of 1 + rad(KG) are not cyclic. Furthermore, we obtain some properties of unit groups of group algebras for extra-special 2-groups and fields of characteristic 2. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of the center and other characteristics (e.g. the exponent, the class of nilpotency, the Baer length, the degree of commutativity) for the chain of iterated unit groups of modular group algebras. For this, we use Lie and radical algebra methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a text for a first-year graduate algebra course. As necessary background we would consider a good undergraduate linear algebra course. An undergraduate abstract algebra course, while helpful, is not necessary (and so an adventurous undergraduate might learn some algebra from this book). Perhaps the principal distinguishing feature of this book is its point of view. Many textbooks tend to be encyclopedic. We have tried to write one that is thematic, with a consistent point of view. The theme, as indicated by our title, is that of modules (though our intention has not been to write a textbook purely on module theory). We begin with some group and ring theory, to set the stage, and then, in the heart of the book, develop module theory. Having developed it, we present some of its applications: canonical forms for linear transformations, bilinear forms, and group representations. Why modules? The answer is that they are a basic unifying concept in mathematics. The reader is probably already familiar with the basic role that vector spaces play in mathematics, and modules are a generaliza tion of vector spaces. (To be precise, modules are to rings as vector spaces are to fields.
