Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 4 Looking back on a good many Annual Meetings of the Modern Language Association, we can recall none that gave us more satisfaction than the last - on January 7 and 8. The attendance might have been better, it is true; but the abominable weather was largely responsible for that. The general level of the speeches was high, and everything went smoothly and in a business-like way. Much of the credit naturally belongs to Mr. Bridge, our unwearying Secretary. The meeting really began on the Monday, for there was a very pleasant little function on the evening of that day. Members and their friends assembled in the hall of Queen's College for a friendly chat, diversified by some excellent music and recitations. It was with pleasure that we noticed the presence of M. Camerlynck and of Herr Kasten, representing the French and the German sister associations. On Tuesday the proceedings began with reports on the progress of the Association. These were generally of a satisfactory character. The number of members (679) constitutes a record, and represents an increase of forty-eight during the year; 60 has been invested in Consols and there is a balance to the good of 25; various committees have been and are doing valuable work; the travelling exhibition has been formed, and has started on its travels; and generally there has been keen activity. Let us hope that the present year will be as satisfactory as the last, so that we may have an equally good report next January at Oxford. At noon our President, Mr. Storr, rose to read his address, and was greeted with well-deserved cheers; for it would be hard to exhaust the list of benefits he has conferred upon the Association. May we long be able to profit by his help and friendly interest. His admirable paper on The Art of Translation is given on another page; it was universally praised for its critical force and fine scholarship. Mr. Storr's own masterly renderings are familiar to many, and the knowledge that he was something more than a critic gave additional weight to his words. At half-past two Mr. Milner-Barry opened a discussion on The Position of German in English Schools with a very able speech, delivered in his impressive and deliberate manner, so well adapted to driving home a truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 7 The meeting was opened informally by a conversazione at Queen's College, Harley Street, on Monday, January 9, which was eminently successful. The Pfeiffer Hall had been suitably decorated, and there was some very good music. We are indebted to the members of the Queen's College staff who made the arrangements for a very pleasant evening, at which - it is gratifying to note - there was a good attendance of members. On Tuesday at 10.30 the usual business was transacted. From the Report of the General Committee it appeared that the last year has been one of continued prosperity. Our Association now numbers over a thousand members. As Mr. Bridge, our energetic Secretary, pointed out, this is no reason why we should rest on our oars. He drew attention to the fact that there are a number of large towns in which we are very badly represented, such as Liverpool, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Nottingham, Brighton, Bedford, Plymouth, and even such 'school towns' as Bedford and Cheltenham. Good results have already been achieved through the establishment of branches, and it is to be hoped that the year 1911 will see further activity in this respect. In each of the towns mentioned above there must surely be some keen members of the Association who would undertake the necessary propaganda. Every increase in numbers means more weight and influence for our Association. The report of the Hon. Treasurer was, on the whole, satisfactory; much could be done if more funds were available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 12 This subject requires careful handling in any book professing to teach Russian, and must be copiously furnished with well-selected examples. In studying and discussing this matter, there is brought home to us one great benefit derived from an intelligent study of language. If we are not merely 'parrot linguists, we cannot help real izing that each separate language known to man represents a definite, distinct, and peculiar attitude to the external and internal worlds, or, rather, a collection of ideas, wishes, and emotions called forth or set up by these worlds, and embodies for this purpose the social and individual consciousness of a distinct community. Every language, therefore, expresses in its own way the 'nationalism' of its present Speakers, as well as the surviving experiences of the past generations. Who, then, remembering this, will not treat all languages with additional respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 3 I feel a kind of doubt as to whether, in welcoming you to hold your conference in this modern University, I should use as my vehicle of speech the ancient tongue of Englishmen, or should address you in that new-fashioned language of Dr. Zamenhof, the general tongue of Esperanto. Yet for you, ladies and gentlemen, there will be no such doubt; for it is clear that if Esperanto wins general use - and from the rapid growth of it, and from the sanity of the reformed grammar it introduces, one could easily believe that it might - we should then have no use for any such gathering as this; for the common coin of daily and unromantic communication would then have superseded all our endeavours to teach the several local languages of the European world. I do not know how it looks to others; to me it seems that Esperanto in vocabulary and grammar is a miracle of simplicity, especially when one brings to the study of it a knowledge of the chief European tongues. Enthusiasts for it proclaim that it will be the bond of union between all lands; will break down many subtle barriers; will advance among nations the Christians message of peace and goodwill. These things may be but passing dreams; we are clearly not met to study the chances of our own demise through the triumph of a system of language which claims to make all education in existing languages comparatively unimportant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 9: The Official Organ of the Modern Language Association This was held on January 8 and 9, at the University of London, and owed part of its great success, no doubt, to the fact that the Association took part in the Conference of educational associations due to the initiative of the late Mr. H. B. Garrod and the Teachers' Guild. Apart from this the meeting would have been one of the most successful ever held owing to the interesting nature and high standard of the papers read, as well as to the lively discussions which followed some of them. It would seem as if our Association, on the eve of its majority, were becoming conscious of its strength, and meant to procure for the modern humanities their rightful place in the modern curriculum, and to assert boldly their power to enlarge the mind and refine the character - in short, to be an instrument of culture to the fullest extent. We should not forget also that much of the success of the meeting was due to Dr. Macan, whose presidential address, strong in its advocacy of modern culture, was so full of wit and epigram and sound common sense. It might be mentioned too that Dr. Macan presided at the Annual Dinner at the Holborn Restaurant, and that his wit and humour contributed much to the evening's enjoyment. Two foreign delegates were present: Dr. Otto from the Neuphilogenverband, and Monsieur Kuhn from L'Association des Professeurs de Langues vivantes, who brought greetings from their respective associations. After the routine business, which was not of a controversial nature, and after the reading of the various reports, financial and otherwise, there was a short interval. Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages The question of methods has doubtless occupied the attention of teachers as long as language teaching has existed. There was a time, however, when there was no dispute regarding those questions which are to-day most generally discussed; when each language teacher, apart from the slight peculiarities of his own individuality, pursued the same course. In this place we are interested merely in foreign-language teaching; and in our discussion we must begin at a point before civilized people, in the accepted meaning of the word, inhabited North America. There was at that time in the Old World but one foreign language in the schools: Latin. It was not until later that Greek was added; it was not until after the destruction of Constantinople by the Turks (1453) that highly educated Greeks fled toward the West, taking with them their language and the remains of their art. Latin became thereafter the common language of the educated, of the learned. Whoever would rise to higher refinement, whoever would enjoy the beauties of the classics, was obliged to learn the ancient languages, - there was no other possibility. And the purpose of such study indicated at once and in a perfectly natural manner the way to be followed - and the means of making the start in this way. Students wished to understand the classics. Without further ado they took up the various authors and began to decipher them, gradually becoming at home in the language. In the Latin schools Cicero was put into the hands of the beginners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 10 The Twenty-first Annual Meeting of the Association was held on January 6 and 7 (Conference Week) in the Jehangir Hall of the University of London. The high level of addresses, papers, and discussions of previous years was more than maintained. The outgoing President, Lord Weardale, was unable, through ill-health, to give his address. His place was taken by the President-Elect, Sir Henry Miero, D.Sc., F.R.S., Principal of the University of London, whose thoughtful and stimulating address is given below, and who distinguished himself in the chair by his urbanity and the great interest he took in the proceedings. Noteworthy features of the meeting were the addresses in French by Mr. Nevill Perkins on L'Angleterre A travers les Lunettes francaises, and by Professor Savory on Maeterlinck. Mr. Daniel Jones gave a delightful lecture on. 'The Importance of Intonation in the Pronunciation of Foreign Languages.' The papers and discussions on 'How far History can be taught in Connection with Modem Languages' and on 'Free Composition' showed great diversity of opinion, and the former led to the passing of a resolution which will be found under the rubric 'Modem Language Association.' All these we hope to print in a future issue. Two delegates attended the meeting. M. Andre Koszul represented La Societe des Professeurs de Langues vivantes, and Mr. Mansion the Scottish Modern Languages Association. The early part of the first morning session was devoted to business matters and to reports, secretarial, financial, and editorial. At twelve o'clock the President began his address. After referring to the influence and the activities of the Association, the publications Modern Language Review and Modern Language Teaching, the inspection of Holiday Courses, the Certificates of Proficiency, etc., Sir Henry noticed the diversity of methods in teaching both ancient and modem languages and the utility of experimenting in such methods. He considered modem languages superior to the ancient ones in that the former gave the student an instrument for continuing his self-culture after school, and recommended the study of a favourite subject, or even reading a novel in a foreign language, because it fostered slower thinking and promoted intellectual effort after school days were over. These remarks were by way of preface to his main theme, which might be entitled - The Needs of the Adult Student. It is continually borne in upon my mind that as systems of education develop and become better organized, there is an increasing tendency to provide more and more fully, but for that reason, perhaps, more and more exclusively, for those who are able to pursue a continuous and systematic course. Now, this is all very well for school pupils; indeed, we trust that modern educational systems are providing something continuous and systematic for all schoolchildren; and it is all very well for those who, having been satisfactorily grounded at school, are able to proceed to systematic work at the University, based on their school foundation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Teaching of Modern Languages in Theory and Practice The Teachers' Training Syndicate. The second appears in a slightly altered form. As delivered it consisted largely of oral illustrations and comments, only a portion of which is now printed, while some parts have been expanded. There seems to be at last a disposition to regard seriously the pretensions of Modern Languages to a larger. Place in Education, and I am not therefore without hope that the First Lecture, if only by the criticism which it evokes, may in some way serve to promote their claim, and especially their claim as Literature, to a fair hearing. Teachers generally find details concerning the practice of other teachers interesting, but I can not flatter myself that any one else will read the Second Lecture to the end.
