Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Literature The editor of the present treatise was unwilling, while at Paris, to lose an Opportunity of becoming acquainted with the more valuable portions of recent French literature. He was naturally desirous that the results of his conscientious studies might be od'ored to the public in such a way as would tend to remove prejudices with which the subject is unfortunately con useted in this country. But convinced that the latter purpose can be effected sooner, and perhaps better, by less ambitious la bors than those of authorship, he has, by the advice of his Father. De Stael, however, had much to do with the liberal izing Of French letters. On the formal and aesthetic side Of literature her in uence was nugatory, but she reacted in a salutary manner against the cramping restrictions Of the purely classic viewpoint. She brought new, if borrowed, ideas to the novel; she broadened its outlook; and she awakened in the younger generation of writers a spirit Of freedom and intrepidity. It was the fecundity of her thought which enriched all the serious fiction writing which fol lowed her. Her Delphine and Corinne, though scarcely read today, played very much the same part in the devel Opment Of French fiction that the works of Richter and Goethe played in the development Of German fiction. The novel became a medium not for esthetic form but for esthetic ideas. In her the literature Of her country donned the garb of cosmopolitanism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of French Fiction This book is a study of novels, not of novelists. It seeks to show the development of what has come to be the chief genre in the most artistic of European literatures. The limitations that this purpose involves are obvious. Biography belongs here only in so far as heredity or environment influence those qualities in an author by which he in turn influences the development of fiction. With some novelists, such as George Sand, these are very significant; with others, such as Daudet, they are hardly significant at all. The poems, dramas, or essays of novelists are usually passed in silence, though they may be, as with Sainte-Beuve, the chief title to literary distinction. And in regard to the novels themselves, this book is less concerned with what is done than with how it is done; it seeks, not to retell a story, but to convey an artistic impression, and in the space that it accords to the 115 novelists and 688 novels or short stories that it names it is less influenced by an author's popularity than by the excellence or novelty of his technic, his style, or his ideas of the functions, ethical, social, philosophical, or artistic, of the novel. Many writers are little read who have been studied by those who are read much. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Readings HE leading object of this volume is to furnish the student with progressive materials for becoming acquainted with the current language of France, under the in uences that are giving it a new phase of development. To that end the selections have been made with reference to style and vocabulary, rather than to the history of the literature, so as to enable the reader to acquire experience in the popular, social, every-day terms and idioms that characterize the writings of the French to - day. Another end in view, though somewhat more local in its origin, is to facilitate a wider range of reading to our own students than was practicable where - a large number of foreign and expensive volumes were required, of which only a limited portion of each was available. The present excerpts are intended to embrace a year's study, beginning with what is easy, and gradually advancing to the more difficult styles of Daudet and Victor Hugo. It is charitably believed, however, that what is desirable for our young gentlemen here, will be acceptable to other schools of learning, and in this confidence the book has been prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism What fate does the future hold in store for him! Only our grandchildren can answer that question. Still, it is permissible to foretell the future, or even, in the pragmatist's way, to make it. If we questioned Bergson himself on this point, he would tell us that his doctrine, like every product of the human brain, is a progressive thing, by no means perfect nor complete nor absolute. I am only a man; therefore you must not ask me for more than I can give. I have merely tried to get into close touch with that nature which always eludes us. For the riches of nature are inexhaustible things do not begin, nor do they end, nor are they as we see them, nor as we should wish them to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six French Poets: Studies in Contemporary Literature IN the Spring Of 1914, I was invited to deliver a series of lectures on modern French poetry in Boston during the following winter. This book consists of those lec tures, rewritten and arranged for the press. It is a strange thing that while so many Americans and English repair every year to France, SO few Of them, in either country, realized What a serious and self-sacri ficing people the French were making Of themselves, before the present war brought the fact to their notice. TO students Of French literature, this was no matter for surprise. They understood that the earnest and single minded endeavour applied to the arts must have its counterpart in other branches Of the national life. That this was the case, is now abundantly proved. We, in the English-speaking countries, are asking ourselves how we could have so misunderstood the French people. But to be misunderstood has been the lot Of Frenchmen when dealing with anglo-saxons from time immemorial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French LiteratureHE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Mr. Hudson's death on the 12th of August 1918, at Droitwich, came as a shock; but not altogether to those by whom he was best known as an unanticipated blow. In 1913 he had had a disabling attack of rheumatic fever, and he was well aware his heart was weak. Indeed, he once remarked to one who some eight years ago remonstrated with him for overtaxing his strength that he had good reason to suppose his span of life would be short, and that he had much that he wished to write. This is the nemesis of the critical profession. Before one can criticise, one must have read and studied; and when at fifty "the ship is cheered," one may perhaps hear the evening bell. Not that Mr. Hudson's energy was in any degree abated. His last book on Nineteenth Century Literature was as ripe and easy as anything he had produced, a thing let fall from copiousness and a mind stored to the full. Learning is a word that in this country has come to bear a very particular connotation. One must know more about some one subject, however minute or subdivided, than others do; or one must labour in the mine and bring to the surface what has not been properly accessible before. A11 author who has at fronted the scruples of good taste, applauds him self on his audacity; he ought rather to reproach himself for awkwardness and a heavy hand. Art consists in knowing how to say everything so that it shall be accepted. It is thus that in painting a criminal passion, Feuillet has produced a picture which is not indeed chaste, which is even the re verse, but remains, after all, decent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another.
