(2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Speeches: Edited With Notes and Introductions Many times during his work as a teacher of English, the editor has felt that it would be desirable to present to high school pupils some speeches by American authors on subjects of our own day. He does not believe that the older classics have no message for the coming generation, nor does he believe that the later writings are too new or too poor in quality for the instruction and inspiration of our youth. If a science text-book should present the principles of the gas engine and the aeroplane, why should not a literature text offer equally modern material? Such an innovation has been made in poetry; and the effect of "Poetry of the People" on classes encourages the editor to attempt a similar innovation in prose. This book, therefore, presents four selections from authors who are living at the present time or who have died recently, on subjects of vital importance to Americans of to-day and to-morrow. Carl Schurz's "True Americanism," although the speech was delivered in 1858, nevertheless has present interest because it was far in advance of its time and foreshadowed some principles of twentieth century government. "The New South" brings now the the same appeal that Henry W. Grady carried to the North in 1886 for a better understanding of the South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Oratory: Seven Representative Orations If we turn to those treatises on oratory which are most useful for the student to-day, - the works of Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian, among the ancients, Dr. Blair in England, and John Quincy Adams in this country, - we have no little difficulty in finding an appropriate definition with which to begin our study. Aristotle says that oratory (or rhetoric, as the whole science of written and spoken discourse was denominated by the Greeks) is "the faculty of finding all the means of persuasion on any subject." Cicero, who is followed by Dr. Blair, defines it as the "art of persuasion"; while Quintilian and John Quincy Adams agree in calling it the "art of speaking well." No one of these definitions is, however, wholly apposite for our purposes to-day. That of Aristotle, since it has to do with but one branch of the subject, what the rhetoricians called invention, the collection of arguments, may be rejected at once. But the other two, one or the other of which has been adopted by perhaps a majority of writers, call for more comment. It is, indeed, true that the end of much oratory is persuasion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary public speaking remains an important part of our national life and a substantial force in shaping current events. Many of America's most important moments and issues, such as wars, scandals, election campaigns, September 11, 2001, have been defined by oratory. Here, over 50 essays cover a substantial and interesting group of major American social, political, economic, and cultural figures from the 1960s to the present. Each entry explains the biographical forces that shaped a speaker and his or her rhetorical approach, focuses mainly on a discussion of the orator's major speeches within the context of historical events, and concludes with an appraisal of the speaker and his or her contribution to American political and social life. All entries incorporate chronologies of major speeches, bibliographies including primary sources, biographies, and critical studies and archival collections or Web sites appropriate for student research. Entries include high profile individuals such as: John D. Ashcroft, Elizabeth Dole, Jerry Falwell, Anita Hill, Ralph Nader, Ronald Reagan, Janet Reno, Gloria Steinem, Malcolm X; and many others. Excerpts of major speeches and sidebars complement the text. Ideal for researchers and students in public speaking classes, American history classes, American politics classes, contemporary public address classes, and rhetorical theory/criticism classes.

Book excerpt: The fifteen orations in this volume are intended to furnish models for students of Oratory, Argumentation, and Debate. For the most part the orations are given without abridgement. In making the selection the aim has been to include only orations that (1) deal with subjects of either contemporary or historical interest, (2) were delivered by men eminent as orators, and (3) are of inherent literary value. There are of course many orators and orations in modern times that fulfill these tests, but it is believed that the orations selected are fairly representative. A further aim has been to secure such variety in the selections as to cover in a single volume the fields of deliberative, forensic, pulpit, and demonstrative oratory, and so to meet the needs of classes both in argumentation and oratorical composition.--Provided by editor in Preface.
