Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an earlier paper we developed a bubble model, based on a view we had shared with van Hove for over two decades. Namely, that if a quark-gluon plasma is produced in a high energy heavy ion collider, then its hadronization products would likely be emitted from small bubbles localized in phase space containing plasma. In this paper we refined the model to become a parton bubble model in which each localized bubble contains initially 3-4 partons which are almost entirely gluons forming a gluon hot spot. We greatly expanded the transverse momentum interval investigated, and thus are able to treat recombination effects within each bubble. We again utilize two particle correlations as a sensitive method for detecting the average bubble substructure. In this manuscript we make many predictions for angular correlations detectable at RHIC and which will be later modified to LHC conditions. Some early available low precision correlation analyses is qualitatively explained. However a critical consistency test of the model can be made with high precision data expected in the near future.

Book excerpt: The realistic and detailed description of an energetic heavy ion reaction requires a Multi Module Model, where the different stages of the reaction are each described with a suitable theoretical approach. One fluid dynamical models provide an adequate and accurate description of the middle stages of the reaction. In addition, fluid dynamical calculations require initial and freeze out conditions. In this work we concentrate on the modeling of the initial stages of the reaction, before the local thermal equilibrium is achieved, and on the freeze out process. We discuss the possibility of the fast simultaneous hadronization and chemical freeze out of supercooled QGP, as a possible solution of the HBT 'puzzle'.

Book excerpt: "In this dissertation,the IP-Glasma pre-thermalization dynamics, viscous hydrodynamics, high-energy jets, and hadronic re-scattering are consistently combined to build a hybrid model for heavy ion collisions. The pre-thermalization dynamics of mid-rapidity gluons is described by the classical Yang-Mills equation with the color charges obtained from the saturation scale. The viscous hydrodynamics, which governs evolution of the QGP medium, is derived from the kinetic theory. The shear and bulk viscosities and second-order transport coefficients are considered in this work. To take the intermediate and high-energy particles into account, production of jets and their energy loss must be properly included. Given that the mean-free-path becomes comparable to macroscopic length scales, the microscopic transport for hadronic re-scattering becomes necessary. Au-Au collisions at RHIC and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC are considered as the applications of this hybrid model. The model calculations are compared with the experimental data putting emphasis on the effects of the bulk viscosity and hadronic re-scattering. The bulk viscosity, which has the negative contribution to the pressure, turns out to be essential for simultaneous description of the multiplicity, radial flow, and anisotropic flow. The hadronic re-scattering is shown to be important to reproduce the baryon distribution. Its effects on pions becomes also significant if one has lower collision energy. In addition, the hadronic re-scattering enables one to describe the energy loss of jets in the hadronic stage. It is shown that the hadronic processes, as well as the partonic ones, have significant effects on jets and must be included to study the jet-medium interactions." --

With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today.
