Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is reasonably well accepted that the standard procedures developed for isotropic homogeneous metals using linear elastic fracture mechanics models are not appropriate for either continuously or discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composites. For example, the ASTM plane strain fracture toughness test methods typically give widely different values of fracture toughness depending on the particular test specimen geometry as well as the fiber orientation. For unidirectional boron/aluminum composites one finds approximately a factor of two difference between the measured values of fracture toughness obtained from a center-notched test coupon and that given by a compact tension specimen. In particular for unidirectional composites, and to a slightly lesser degree for angle ply laminates, the dominant controlling mechanism for this behavior is matrix plasticity. A secondary toughening mechanism, resulting from the matrix plasticity, is stable transverse fiber failure. The present paper will focus on both the influence of the large plastic zone at the end of the notch and on the constraint that the fibers impose on the shape of this zone, as well as the transverse crack growth. First, a review of some particular experimental studies and methods of analysis for predicting crack growth and fracture of notched unidirectional metal matrix composites is given. Next, two mechanistic models for unidirectional composites with damage are presented. The first is an improved shear lag model that accounts for both of the above damage modes, and the second describes a recent extension of the shear lag concept in an attempt to include transverse stresses. A related finite width laminate model is then discussed, and it is indicated that an isotropic finite width correction factor is reasonably accurate for most center-notched test coupons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the modeling of crack growth resistance of titanium-based metal matrix composites under cyclic loading by considering the conditions necessary to promote the crack arrest of dominant cracks that are often observed in these materials. The presence of dominant cracks facilitates the application of fracture mechanics parameters such as the stress intensity factor, K, and the stress intensity factor range, ?K, to describe crack growth resistance under monotonic and cyclic loading, respectively. Using such fracture mechanics parameters, weight function methods have been used to model, assess, and predict the onset of crack arrest for cracks growing in both uniform and nonuniform stress fields. The model requires the experimental determination of crack arrest conditions for a particular testpiece geometry, for a given loading condition, and where the specific number of intact bridging fibers is also determined. It can then be used to predict the influence of crack shape and crack size for a variety of testpiece geometries and loading conditions. It is clear that corner cracks and semi-elliptical cracks are potentially more damaging than equivalent through-thickness cracks. Particular attention has also been taken to model the behavior of cracks growing in selectively reinforced composites, and the importance of the thickness of any unreinforced cladding is considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work deals with the thermomechanical mechanical behavior of microstructured materials, which has attracted considerable interest from both the academic and the industrial research communities. The past decade has witnessed major progress in the development of analytical as well as numerical modeling approaches and of experimental methods in this field. Considerable research efforts have been aimed at obtaining microstructure-property correlations and at studying the damage and failure behavior of microstructured materials. The book combines an overview of important analytical and numerical modeling approaches in continuum micromechanics and is aimed at academic and industrial researchers, such as materials scientists, mechanical engineers, and applied physicists, who are working or planning to work in the field of mechanics of microstructured materials such as composites, metals and ceramics.

Book excerpt: This book explores damage growth and fracture processes in cementitious, ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, integrating properties like stiffness and strength with observation at below macroscopic scale. Advances in multiscale modelling and analysis pertain directly to materials which either have a range of relevant microstructural scales, like metals, or do not have a well-defined microstructure, like cementitious or ceramic composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the application of the coupled criterion to characterize the first steps of failure mechanisms in composites. The coupled criterion was developed in the context of the finite fracture mechanics and is based on assuming that a crack of a finite extension appears abruptly when a stress criterion is fulfilled and this crack onset is energetically admissible. Using this criterion, the critical load leading to a crack onset can be expressed as a function of well-known physical properties of the material as strength and fracture toughness. The thesis outline can be divided into two main parts: The first part studies the phenomenon of crack initiation and the failure criterion employed here for its prediction. The controversial concept of crack initiation and the main tool employed to predict it are discussed. The formulation and the practical application of the coupled criterion are also reviewed. The second part describes the application of the coupled criterion to different failure mechanisms at different scales: fiber-matrix debonding under transverse loading in FRC, debonding of spherical inclusions in particle-reinforced composites, transverse cracking in cross-ply laminates and crack initiation at a weak surface in a bonded V-notch.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the surface effects at the interface boundary of metal/sand moulds, and their influence on the surface quality, microstructure and mechanical and anticorrosive properties of high-quality cast iron. It explores utilitarian aspects of the production of high-quality cast iron castings, including thin-walled castings of high-quality cast iron alloys, and examines problems related to the determination of moulding sands and reclaim quality, and their influence on castings. Presenting new material, this book takes into account the influence of metal quality, pouring temperature, solidification time, the quality of moulding sand with the reclaim application, as well the binders of moulding sands, on the formation of the degenerated graphite near surface layers. It also employs the latest research methods, such as a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer (WDS) analysis and thermodynamic calculations, which were carried out on the reactions occurring in the study area. Providing a valuable resource to academics and researchers interested in materials science, metal casting and metallurgy, this book is also intended for metal industry professionals.
