Book excerpt: Spatial filtering and directional discrimination has been shown to be an effective pre-processing approach for noise reduction in microphone array systems. In dual-microphone hearing aids, fixed and adaptive beamforming techniques are the most common solutions for enhancing the desired speech and rejecting unwanted signals captured by the microphones. In fact, beamformers are widely utilized in systems where spatial properties of target source (usually in front of the listener) is assumed to be known. In this dissertation, some dual-microphone coherence-based speech enhancement techniques applicable to hearing aids are proposed. All proposed algorithms operate in the frequency domain and (like traditional beamforming techniques) are purely based on the spatial properties of the desired speech source and does not require any knowledge of noise statistics for calculating the noise reduction filter. This benefit gives our algorithms the ability to address adverse noise conditions, such as situations where interfering talker(s) speaks simultaneously with the target speaker. In such cases, the (adaptive) beamformers lose their effectiveness in suppressing interference, since the noise channel (reference) cannot be built and updated accordingly. This difference is the main advantage of the proposed techniques in the dissertation over traditional adaptive beamformers. Furthermore, since the suggested algorithms are independent of noise estimation, they offer significant improvement in scenarios that the power level of interfering sources are much more than that of target speech. The dissertation also shows the premise behind the proposed algorithms can be extended and employed to binaural hearing aids. The main purpose of the investigated techniques is to enhance the intelligibility level of speech, measured through subjective listening tests with normal hearing and cochlear implant listeners. However, the improvement in quality of the output speech achieved by the algorithms are also presented to show that the proposed methods can be potential candidates for future use in commercial hearing aids and cochlear implant devices.

Within the auditory system, the function of the binaural processing is especially important for human listeners to better localize and perceive sounds. Past research in the literature has shown that the performance of normal hearing listeners is more robust than the existing automatic speech recognition machines in the presence of multiple interfering sounds. However, there is little understanding of the factors that are important for human speech perception in these environments. This thesis addresses the problem of speech intelligibility in complex environments by investigating the functionality of binaural processing in these environments. Two types of classical binaural processing models [Equalization-Cancellation (EC) model and Inter- aural Difference (ID) model] are extended and applied to speech perception in complex environments. The complex environments include multiple and different types of interfering sounds masking the frontal speech target from different spatial locations. The model outputs are evaluated using both the computational speech intelligibility measures and the psychoacoustic measures. The performance of the model is compared with existing speech intelligibility data. The comparison is followed by a discussion of how well these binaural models can account for binaural advantages in speech perception and what are the factors that are important in speech perception tasks. Results of the current study show that (1) both of the models can successfully predict speech intelligibility data in the presence of different noise maskers (either modulated or not); (2) both of the models fail to capture the informational masking component when the maskers are speech, especially in the co-located condition; (3) different factors involved in speech perception are identified, such as signal-to-noise ratio, gap-listening, and information masking and; and (4) Equalization-Cancellation models are able to generate diotic outputs that have equivalent intelligibility as the original dichotic stimuli while the Interaural Difference model can not, due to the sparseness of the mask in the time-frequency domain.

Book excerpt: A new objective measurement system to predict speech intelligibility in binaural listening conditions is proposed for use with nonlinear hearing devices. Digital processing inside such devices often involves nonlinear operations such as clipping, compression, and noise reduction algorithms. Standard objective measures such as the Articulation Indeix (AI), the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) and the Speech Transmission Index (STI) have been developed for monaural listening. Binaural extensions of these measures have been proposed in the literature, essentially consisting of a binaural pre-processing stage followed by monaural intelligibility prediction using the better ear or the binaurally enhanced signal. In this work, a three-stage extension of the binaural SII approach is proposed that deals with nonlinear acoustic input signals. The reference-based model operates as follows: (1) a stage to deal with nonlinear processing based on a signal-separation model to recover estimates of speech, noise and distortion signals at the output of hearing devices; (2) a binaural processing stage using the Equalization-Cancellation (EC) model; and (3) a stage for intelligibility prediction using the SII or the short-time Extended SII (ESII). Multiple versions of the model have been developed and tested for use with hearing devices. A software simulator is used to perform hearing-device processing under various binaural listening conditions. Details of the modeling procedure are discussed along with an experimental framework for collecting subjective intelligibility data. In the absence of hearing-device processing, the model successfully predicts speech intelligibility in all spatial configurations considered. Varying levels of success were obtained using two simple distortion modeling approaches with different distortion mechanisms. Future refinements to the model are proposed based on the results discussed in this work.

In this "cocktail-party" situation (Cherry 1953) listeners are helped by two binaural processes to segregate the desired voice from the competing noise: Better-Ear listening (BE) and Binaural Unmasking (BU). The aim of this thesis was to develop a model capable of efficiently predicting the benefits of BE and BU from Binaural Room Impulse Responses (BRIR). The developed model is a computationally efficient version of that created by Lavandier & Culling (2010) that predicts speech reception thresholds which include the benefit of binaural-unmasking, as explained by Equalization-Cancellation theory (Durlach 1963, 1972), and the benefit of better-ear listening, through Target-to-Interferer ratio analysis. The model accurately predicted a number of appropriate data sets from the literature that measure speech reception thresholds as a function of target and interferer source locations. Application of the model to a number of novel situations allowed environmental factors affecting intelligibility to be predicted and explored. In most situations, the effect of reverberation is to reduce the level of BE and BU, except when the listener is close to the interfering source, but this is when the benefits are needed the most. Depending on the spatial separation and source distances, the inclusion of multiple interferers again reduces the benefits in the majority of situations. To examine the benefits of head orientation a number of configurations were tested, whilst rotating the listener relative to the sound field. Benefits exceeding 12 dB can be achieved through modest rotations, particularly showing the benefits of BE. According to the model, the current literature on the benefits of bilateral cochlear implantation has underestimated that benefit by employing sub-optimal spatial configurations; using optimum orientations the model predicts an extra 6 dB of benefit being available to the listener. In a simulated restaurant situation, the model predicts that orientation of a table can affect the ability of a listener by up to 5 dB.

Book excerpt: Previous studies provide evidence that listening experience in a particular reverberant environment improves speech intelligibility and localization performance in that environment. Such studies, however, are few, and there is little knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. The experiments presented in this thesis explored the effect of reverberation context, in particular, the similarity in interaural coherence within a context, on listeners' performance in sound localization, speech perception in a spatially separated noise, spatial release from speech-on-speech masking, and target location identification in a multi-talker configuration. All experiments were conducted in simulated reverberant environments created with a loudspeaker array in an anechoic chamber. The reflections comprising the reverberation in each environment had the same temporal and relative amplitude patterns, but varied in their lateral spread, which affected the interaural coherence of reverberated stimuli. The effect of reverberation context was examined by comparing performance in two reverberation contexts, mixed and fixed. In the mixed context, the reverberation environment applied to each stimulus varied trial-by-trial, whereas in the fixed context, the reverberation environment was held constant within a block of trials. In Experiment I (absolute judgement of sound location), variability in azimuth judgments was lower in the fixed than in the mixed context, suggesting that sound localization depended not only on the cues presented in isolated trials. In Experiment II, the intelligibility of speech in a spatially separated noise was found to be similar in both reverberation contexts. That result contrasts with other studies, and suggests that the fixed context did not assist listeners in compensating for degraded interaural coherence. In Experiment III, speech intelligibility in multi-talker configurations was found to be better in the fixed context, but only when the talkers were separated. That is, the fixed context improved spatial release from masking. However, in the presence of speech maskers, consistent reverberation did not improve the localizability of the target talker in a three-alternative location-identification task. Those results suggest that in multi-talker situations, consistent coherence may not improve target localizability, but rather that consistent context may facilitate the buildup of spatial selective attention.

Book excerpt: Although there are numerous single-channel noise reduction strategies to improve speech perception in a noisy environment, most of them can only improve speech quality but not improve speech intelligibility for normal hearing (NH) or hearing impaired (HI) listeners. Exceptions that can improve speech intelligibility currently are only those that require a priori statistics of speech or noise. Most of the noise reduction algorithms in hearing aids are adopted directly from the algorithms for NH listeners without taking into account of the hearing loss factors within HI listeners. HI listeners suffer more in speech intelligibility than NH listeners in the same noisy environment. Further study of monaural noise reduction algorithms for HI listeners is required. The motivation is to adapt a model-based approach in contrast to the conventional Wiener filtering approach. The model-based algorithm called sparse coding shrinkage (SCS) was proposed to extract key speech information from noisy speech. The SCS algorithm was evaluated by comparison with another state-of-the-art Wiener filtering approach through speech intelligibility and quality tests using 9 NH and 9 HI listeners. The SCS algorithm matched the performance of the Wiener filtering algorithm in speech intelligibility and speech quality. Both algorithms showed some intelligibility improvements for HI listeners but not at all for NH listeners. The algorithms improved speech quality for both HI and NH listeners. Additionally, a physiologically-inspired hearing loss simulation (HLS) model was developed to characterize hearing loss factors and simulate hearing loss consequences. A methodology was proposed to evaluate signal processing strategies for HI listeners with the proposed HLS model and NH subjects. The corresponding experiment was performed by asking NH subjects to listen to unprocessed/enhanced speech with the HLS model. Some of the effects of the algorithms seen in HI listeners are reproduced, at least qualitatively, by using the HLS model with NH listeners. Conclusions: The model-based algorithm SCS is promising for improving performance in stationary noise although no clear difference was seen in the performance of SCS and a competitive Wiener filtering algorithm. Fluctuating noise is more difficult to reduce compared to stationary noise. Noise reduction algorithms may perform better at higher input signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) where HI listeners can get benefit but where NH listeners already reach ceiling performance. The proposed HLS model can save time and cost when evaluating noise reduction algorithms for HI listeners.
