Book excerpt: « L’évolution climatique actuelle et l’usage intensif des ressources en eau dans notre société placent la protection des ressources d’eau douce, et donc la compréhension des processus contrôlant sa qualité, au cœur des problématiques de recherche actuelles. Parmi ces processus, les flux de matières entre les rivières et les eaux provenant des bassins versants, dont les processus de subsurface, contrôlent l’état chimique des eaux de rivière et leur contribution comme source de CO2 à l’atmosphère. Plusieurs techniques sont disponibles pour comprendre et quantifier ces flux. Dans ce cadre, l’utilisation du radon en tant que traceur géochimique permet de spécifiquement cibler les eaux souterraines dans leur mélange avec les eaux de surface. Cette thèse cherche à approfondir les connaissances portant sur cette connectivité en qualifiant et en quantifiant les flux d’eaux souterraines et de surface basé sur une combinaison d’approches géochimiques et hydrogéologiques. La rivière Matane (Québec, Canada) a été choisie dans ce cadre comme modèle d’étude. À travers le suivi pluriannuel à haute résolution spatiale et temporelle des niveaux piézométriques dans un méandre de la rivière, couplé à des campagnes d’échantillonnage d’eau de surface et d’eaux souterraines, cette recherche vise d’une part à estimer l’influence de la rivière sur les eaux de l’aquifère alluvial, et d’autre part à quantifier les flux d’eau souterraine et de carbone inorganique dissous à la rivière. Ce travail est accompagné d’une réflexion sur l’optimisation de l’usage des bases de données acquises. Dans le chapitre 1, les variations géochimiques des eaux souterraines et des eaux de surfaces (radon, température, pH, conductivité électrique, et isotopes stables de l’eau) ont été analysées au cours du temps en parallèle avec les variations de température de l’air, du débit dans la rivière, et des niveaux piézométriques. Une analyse multivariée par redondance a permis d’établir que le débit de la rivière contrôle la géochimie dans les eaux souterraines jusqu’à une distance de plus de 200 m du rivage. Un mélange d’eau souterraine avec les eaux de surface se produit ainsi dans l’aquifère alluvial à plus large échelle que ne le laissait penser la littérature scientifique. Le calcul des temps de résidence de l’eau souterraine dans la plaine alluviale, à partir d’un modèle basé sur l’activité de radon, montre des apports d’eau souterraine transversaux et verticaux à l’aquifère alluvial qui répondent aux variations de débit dans la rivière. Le chapitre 2 s’intéresse à quantifier les décharges d’eau souterraine à la rivière. Ces apports, appliqués aux paramètres du système des carbonates, a permis d’estimer les flux de carbone inorganique dissous à la rivière et de CO2 à l’atmosphère aux échelles infra- et pluri- kilométriques. Dans un contexte d’étiage, des transects longitudinaux à hautes et à basses résolutions spatiales d’activités en radon, de carbone inorganique dissous, d’alcalinité totale et de pression partielle en CO2 ont été réalisés. Un modèle utilisant l’activité en radon révèle une hétérogénéité spatiale des décharges d’eau souterraine. Ces apports s’accompagnent d’un flux de carbone inorganique dissous correspondant à moins de 13 % de celui soutenu par la rivière. Ces apports externes induisent pourtant un important flux de CO2 vers l’atmosphère traduisant un dégazage extrêmement rapide du CO2 dès l’arrivée de l’eau souterraine en surface. Le troisième chapitre porte sur l’optimisation de l’usage de bases de données hydrogéologiques via leur partage public et normalisé. Au travers d’exemples tirés de la base de données piézométriques pluriannuelle acquise sur la rivière Matane entre 2011 et 2019, l’étude montre qu’une ré-exploitation d’une base de données existante peut permettre de peaufiner, d’étendre ou de limiter des conclusions obtenues au cours d’études précédentes d’une part, mais aussi de réinvestir les données au sein d’études connexes portant sur des problématiques différentes. Le partage de bases de données selon les principes FAIR est une approche efficace pour préserver et donner accès aux données de recherche à une communauté scientifique large. Cette disponibilité se traduit par des opportunités de mise en valeur des données scientifiques préexistantes dans une optique de maximisation des connaissances et des avancées scientifiques. L’originalité de ce travail réside sur le développement et l’utilisation de bases de données hydrogéologiques et géochimiques, rendues ouvertes et accessibles. L'augmentation des surfaces imperméables et les modifications deschemins d'écoulement par les réseaux d'assainissement influencent leur hydrologie. Ces modificationssont notamment liées aux choix de modes de gestion des eaux pluviales : réseaux unitaires,réseaux séparatifs, infiltration à la parcelle, etc. La modélisation hydrologique spatialisée, quirend compte de l'hétérogénéité des bassins versants, est un outil permettant d'évaluer les différentsenjeux en termes d'occupation du sol et de gestion des eaux pluviales. Cependant, peu demodèles ont été construits pour être appliqués aux bassins périurbains, à l'échelle des gestionnaires( ̃ 100 km2) et pour des simulations sur de longues périodes (> 10 ans). La modélisationhydrologique doit donc être adaptée afin de mieux capter les spécificités des milieux périurbainstelles que l'hétérogénéité de l'occupation du sol et la connexion de certaines zones urbaines à unréseau d'assainissement.Ce travail de thèse a consisté à développer un nouvel outil de modélisation adapté à ces problématiques: le modèle distribué horaire J2000P. Ce modèle simule les processus hydrologiquesen milieux ruraux et urbains et prend en compte les réseaux d'assainissement, les connexionsà ces réseaux et les déversements des déversoirs d'orage (DO). Le modèle a été mis en oeuvresur le bassin périurbain de l'Yzeron ( ̃ 130 km2), situé à l'ouest de Lyon. L'évaluation, effectuéeà l'exutoire de différents sous-bassins de tailles et d'occupations du sol différentes, montre desrésultats très encourageants. Le modèle a tendance à sous-estimer le débit mais la dynamiquedes pics est bien représentée tout comme le déversement des DO. Suite aux résultats de l'évaluation,une analyse de sensibilité « pas à pas » du modèle a été réalisée et différentes hypothèsesde fonctionnement du bassin ont été formulées pour améliorer la compréhension du modèle etdes processus représentés. Le modèle a ensuite été utilisé pour tester l'impact de modificationsde l'occupation des sols et/ou de la gestion des eaux pluviales sur la réponse hydrologique. Lemodèle montre que la gestion de l'occupation du sol a moins d'influence sur l'hydrologie dubassin que la gestion du réseau d'assainissement.

Les travaux sont centrés sur les radioéléments Béryllium-7 et Iode-131. La méthodologie de traçage est développée et les résultats portent sur la cinétique de transport des sédiments dans la Vilaine.

Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore, it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future.
