Book excerpt: Trees compete for various resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients, which can be expressed as numerical terms, called competition indices (CI). Competition between individual trees is correlated with their growth and mortality. Therefore, CIs are used as independent variables to develop, improve and modify growth and yield models. This study was conducted to test the effect of neighborhood competition on tree diameter growth among Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), in the Pacific Northwest Coast Range, USA. After testing seven distance-independent CIs and three distance-dependent CIs, only the distance-independent CIs were found to significantly affect the diameter growth model. Among them, CIs with basal area and diameter information were the most impactful. As a result, a simple CI was very effective in a model that accounts for the basal area information of different tree species.

Book excerpt: Three equations for predicting tree height as a function of diameter (outside bark) at breast height are presented for six species found in coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest. Foresters can use these "height-diameter" equations to avoid the time-consuming task of measuring heights of all individual trees in an inventory, a stand exam, or a timber cruise. Equation coefficients were estimated with weighted nonlinear regression techniques. Because the relationship between a tree's height and diameter depends on the tree's competitive position within the stand, alternative equations, including the average height and average diameter of the 40 largest-diameter trees/ac, are also presented. These equations are used in the Stand Management Cooperative version of ORGANON.

Book excerpt: Equations for predicting the 5-yr diameter-growth rate of a tree are presented for eight conifer and nine hardwood tree species from southwest Oregon. Equation parameters for undamaged and damaged trees combined were estimated by weighted nonlinear regression. The resulting equation for Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] explained more than 71% of the variation when validated against an independent data set. These equations are being incorporated into the new edition of ORGANON for southwest Oregon, a model for predicting the development of stands. The equations extend the previous model to older stands and stands with a larger component of hardwood. We explored the effects of specific damaging agents on the 5-yr diameter-growth rates of the five most frequently encountered species and estimated damage correction factors. Damaging agents can impact 5-yr diameter-growth rate significantly and, as a result, can lead over time to diversification in stand structure. Therefore, full characterization of stand development should include prediction of the presence and frequency of the agents damaging trees within the stand and their impact on tree attributes such as total height, height-to-crown-base, diameter-growth rate, height-growth rate, and mortality rate.

A. Zumrawi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diameter growth of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuqa menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) estimated from increment cores was compared with that obtained from repeated measurements of tree diameter on permanent plots located in two Douglas-fir study areas in the central Coast Range of Oregon. Growth was measured for a 6-year period (1979- 1985). Diameter growth measured from two increment cores taken opposite to each other, provided an unbiased estimate of the stand average diameter-growth as determined from repeated measurements of diameter. However, a statistically significant trend was found in the differences in individual tree diameter-growth between the two methods of measurements. A nonlinear model was used to characterize these differences. The practical significance of the observed trend and the use of the developed model as a calibration tool, depend upon the reliability desired by the particular user. The second part was a simulation study to examine the effect upon growth model predictions of using alternative sample plot designs to measure predictor variables. Five forest stands were generated through computer simulation by use of field data and random spatial distributions. Two variable-radius plot designs and four fixed-radius circular plots were used to sample simultaneously the generated stands . Sample data then were used to simulate diameter and gross-basal-area growth in both a single-tree/distance-independent growth model and a whole-stand/diameter-free growth model. In comparing the growth predictions of each model, the plot design used to develop the model was the standard against which alternative plot designs were evaluated. Both fixed and variable area plots provide, with varying degree of precision, unbiased estimates of stand-level predictor variables. For both models, average gross basal area growth-rate predictions from 50 samples of each alternative design were not significantly different from the standard design. However, large differences in individual predictions may occur as a result of using a different plot design. The magnitude of these differences depend on the stand size and density.

Book excerpt: Summaries from 49 published articles on site-index and dominant-heightgrowth curves and equations are presented for 20 tree species or species groups found in California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, southeastern Alaska, Idaho, and western Montana. The summaries are organized by species. Each summary describes the modeling approach, type of curves/ equations, base age, and type of age presented in the article. In addition, the geographic location, number of trees or plots, range in age, and range in site index used to develop the curves/equations are also described.
