Book excerpt: The character of modern power systems is changing rapidly and inverters are taking over a considerable part of the energy generation. A future purely inverter-based grid could be a viable solution, if its technical feasibility can be first validated. The focus of this work lies on inverter dominated microgrids, which are also mentioned as 'hybrid' in several instances throughout the thesis. Hybrid, as far as the energy input of each generator is concerned. Conventional fossil fuel based generators are connected in parallel to renewable energy sources as well as battery systems. The main contributions of this work comprise of: The analysis of detailed models and control structures of grid inverters, synchronous generators and battery packs and the utilization of these models to formulate control strategies for distributed generators. The developed strategies accomplish objectives in a wide time scale, from maintaining stability during faults and synchronization transients as well as optimizing load flow through communication-free distributed control. Die Struktur der modernen Energieversorgung hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten massiv geändert. Dezentrale Generatoren, die auf Wechselrichtern basieren, übernehmen einen großen Teil der Energieerzeugung. Ein ausschließlich wechselrichterbasiertes Netz wäre ein realistischer Ansatz, wenn seine technische Machbarkeit verifiziert werden könnte. Die wichtigste Beiträge dieser Arbeit sind: Die Analyse von Modellen und Regelstrukturen von Netzwechselrichtern, Synchrongeneratoren und Batterieanlagen. Die entwickelten Modelle werden verwendet, um Regelstrategien für dezentrale Generatoren in Mittelspannungsinselnetzen zu formulieren. Die erste Strategie ist eine Synchronisationsmethode für netzbildende Wechselrichter. Zweitens wird die Leistungsaufteilung in Mittelspannungsinselnetzen mittels Droop Regelung analysiert. Weiterhin erfolgt die Untersuchung der transienten Lastaufteilung zwischen netzbildenden Einheiten mit unterschiedlichen Zeitkonstanten. Beim Betrieb mehrerer paralleler Wechselrichter wird der Einfluss der Netzimpedanz auf die transiente Lastaufteilung analysiert. Die dritte entworfene Regelstrategie umfasst die Integration der Sekundärregelung in die Primärregelung. Der Ladezustand von Batterien wird mit der Lastaufteilung gekoppelt, um die Autonomie des Netzes zu stärken. Abschließend wird eine Kurzschlussstrategie für netzbildende und netzspeisende Wechselrichter entwickelt. Ziel der Strategie ist die Maximierung des Kurzschlussstromes. Als zusätzliche Randbedingung soll keine Kommunikation zwischen Generatoren stattfinden.

A generic three-phase grid-tied inverter and control system model is derived in synchronous reference frame. The structure of this inverter is intended to be similar in composition to other three-phase inverters whose models and dynamics are well understood. This model is used as a starting point in the development of a more comprehensive model, which is capable of representing the coupling between complex power, bus voltage, and frequency that occurs in a microgrid. This new model is a combination of the generic inverter and an autonomous, grid-forming inverter with a local load. The accuracy of the new model is verified through comparisons of small-signal dynamic predictions, simulations, and experimental results from a microgrid testbed. The proposed procedure of modifying an existing small-signal model for use in a microgrid system retains the information of the original model while successfully enabling the prediction of dynamic interactions with other generating units in the microgrid. The process is scalable for any number of inverters at the same point of connection, allowing accurate predictions of full system dynamics during distributed control actions, such as black start or grid-resynchronization. Traditional linear control techniques may be used to improve the performance and stability of the microgrid system. This is a demonstrated in an analysis of the system's eigenvalues. Such models quickly become computationally intensive for large systems. Similarly, traditional approaches to control do not use advanced methodologies and suffer from poor performance and limited operating range. In this document a linear model is derived for an inverter connected to the Thevenin equivalent of a microgrid. This model is then compared to a nonlinear simulation model and analyzed using the open and closed loop systems in both the time and frequency domains. The modeling error is quantified with emphasis on its use for controller design purposes. Control design examples are given using a Glover McFarlane controller, gain sched- uled Glover McFarlane controller, and bumpless transfer controller which are compared to the standard droop control approach. These examples serve as a guide to illustrate the use of multi-variable modeling techniques in the context of robust controller design and show that gain scheduled MIMO control techniques can extend the operating range of a microgrid. A hardware implementation is used to compare constant gain droop controllers with Glover McFarlane controllers and shows a clear advantage of the Glover McFarlane approach.

Book excerpt: This paper compares two control schemes in the application control layer of a non-PLL grid-forming (GFM) inverter to gain the insights and understanding of how the two schemes affect the dynamic responses of the GFM inverters and the transition operation of microgrids. Both schemes can achieve smooth microgrid transition operation and power tracking, however, the first scheme expects to exhibit more transients due to the feedforward of the inverse dynamic model of the output filter. Simulation results show that both control schemes achieve successful transition operation with smooth transients, and the second control scheme exhibits slightly better transients in the system frequency during islanding operation and the first one has slightly superior transients in the system frequency during reconnection operation. The power tracking performance in the grid-connected mode is evaluated, which shows that the first scheme has better active power tracking and the second one has better reactive power tracking. The analysis and results are useful to develop reliable control schemes for non-PLL GFM inverters because more and more inverters will work as non-PLL grid-forming sources in the future grids due to better stability and reliability.

Therefore, control of inverter-based or inverter-dominant systems is gaining a lot of attention while posing different challenges compared to traditional power systems. Conventional droop-based control architectures can provide power-sharing capability, and are considered to be a cost-effective and reliable solution for microgrids. However, experimental studies have revealed that for small-scale microgrids, stability is significantly compromised by the droop control due to low X/R ratios and short lines. Therefore, a proper modeling framework for obtaining concise and accurate models becomes important to understand the physical nature of the instability. Such a framework can further facilitate a systematic control design for stability enhancement, allowing the development of power-sharing strategies and plug-and-play functionality for efficient microgrid operation. In this thesis, high-fidelity reduced-order models for microgrids are first developed and investigated. Then, based on the proposed models, concise and simple stability certificates are derived along with virtual impedance methods for local and global stability enhancement. Detailed discussions are carried out on the control design that aims at achieving both droop stability and controller robustness. Finally, a power and energy management scheme based on secondary compensation is developed to enhance operational efficiency. The integrated solution provides a comprehensive reference for the development of stable, reliable, and flexible inverter-based microgrids. All results are validated through both simulation and experimental studies.

The first control strategy has approximately 50% GFM inverters, and all the battery inverters are working in GFM control mode. Originally, the second control strategy has approximately 10% GFM inverters, with only two battery inverters working in GFM control mode and the rest working in grid-following (GFL) PQ control mode based on current control, which cannot stabilize the microgrid system. Then, the second control strategy is modified to change the GFM inverters from droop control to isochronous control and the GFL battery inverters from traditional current control to voltage control for power control. Both control strategies can maintain system stability; however, the first control strategy can better handle contingency events. The study indicates that 1) a microgrid system with a higher percentage of GFM inverters has better stability; and 2) a microgrid with a lower percentage of GFM inverters can have poor stability, but improved control strategies in inverters can improve system stability. This study improves the understanding of how different percentages of GFM inverters and inverter control strategies affect the system stability of low-inertia microgrids.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates microgrid transient stability with mixed generation - synchronous generator (SG), grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters - under increasing penetration levels toward a 100% renewable generation microgrid. Specifically, the dynamics of a microgrid with an SG and GFL inverter(s), an SG with GFM inverter(s), and an SG with GFM and GFL inverters under each penetration are evaluated with an electromagnetic transient study with two critical dynamic events: unplanned islanding and switching in a pumped induction motor load. Analysis and simulation results indicate that the microgrid with GFL inverters running in parallel with the SG can provide a faster power response than the GFM inverters to compensate for the deviations of the frequency and voltage. The scenario with the mixed SG, GFM, and GFL inverter has the best transient and steady-state stability toward 100% inverter-based resource (IBR) penetration. This comprehensive study provides helpful references for microgrid engineers to understand the microgrid stability when facing various choice of installing IBRs (GFL, GFM, or mixed).
