Book excerpt: The concept of disposal of high-level nuclear waste in deep boreholes drilled into crystalline bedrock is gaining renewed interest and consideration as a viable mined repository alternative. A large amount of work on conceptual borehole design and preliminary performance assessment has been performed by researchers at MIT, Sandia National Laboratories, SKB (Sweden), and others. Much of this work relied on analytical derivations or, in a few cases, on weakly coupled models of heat, water, and radionuclide transport in the rock. Detailed numerical models are necessary to account for the large heterogeneity of properties (e.g., permeability and salinity vs. depth, diffusion coefficients, etc.) that would be observed at potential borehole disposal sites. A derivation of the FALCON code (Fracturing And Liquid CONvection) was used for the thermal-hydrologic modeling. This code solves the transport equations in porous media in a fully coupled way. The application leverages the flexibility and strengths of the MOOSE framework, developed by Idaho National Laboratory. The current version simulates heat, fluid, and chemical species transport in a fully coupled way allowing the rigorous evaluation of candidate repository site performance. This paper mostly focuses on the modeling of a deep borehole repository under realistic conditions, including modeling of a finite array of boreholes surrounded by undisturbed rock. The decay heat generated by the canisters diffuses into the host rock. Water heating can potentially lead to convection on the scale of thousands of years after the emplacement of the fuel. This convection is tightly coupled to the transport of the dissolved salt, which can suppress convection and reduce the release of the radioactive materials to the aquifer. The purpose of this work has been to evaluate the importance of the borehole array spacing and find the conditions under which convective transport can be ruled out as a radionuclide transport mechanism. Preliminary results show that modeling of the borehole array, including the surrounding rock, predicts convective flow in the system with physical velocities of the order of 10-5 km/yr over 105 years. This results in an escape length on the order of kilometers, which is comparable to the repository depth. However, a correct account of the salinity effects reduces convection velocity and escape length of the radionuclides from the repository.

Book excerpt: This study is the first investigation of a method to dispose of the spent fuel of the Travelling Wave Reactor (TWR), an innovative nuclear reactor design. Because significantly higher heat is produced in the central region of the rods than in conventional spent fuel, TWR spent fuel presents new challenges. This work studies the disposal of TWR high-linear-power-spent fuel in deep boreholes in crystalline host rock. The boreholes are 5 km deep, separated horizontally by 200 in, and the spent fuel is enclosed in metallic canisters placed vertically in the deposition boreholes in the bottom 2 km. Nuclear regulators require analysis of the repository's performance for one million years. Other than human intrusion, groundwater transport is the only important mechanism for escape of radioactive material from the repository. Heat decay, combined with the natural geothermal flux, causes groundwater to flow, compromising radioactive containment. The numerical model used to study this problem must accurately predict the thermal field and induced fluid flow at different time and length scales, with strong coupling of all physics. Given these requirements, the numerical simulations of the coupled thermo-hydraulic behavior of a nuclear waste repository are computationally very expensive. To perform the repository simulations, we modified an open-source, finite element-based, fully implicit, fully coupled hydrothermal C++ code, FALCON, based on the MOOSE framework (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment). Our simulations show that a first local maximum temperature in the rock near the central borehole of the array occurs within 30 years of disposal (76°C), and an extended period of elevated temperatures with a larger absolute maximum (96°C) begins at 5,000 years. Neither supercritical conditions nor boiling are reached. Thermally driven fluid flow leads to particles from the waste breaking through at the surface at about 150,000 years. A comparison with nuclear waste from conventional Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) shows that TWR spent fuel produces lower temperatures than PWR. spent fuel for the first 3,200 years. After this time, TWR temperatures surpass PWR results. The flow characteristics for PWR and TWR are similar. The breakthrough time can be extended by increasing the spacing between the boreholes.

Reduced-order models are needed in risk assessments for licensing and regulating long-term nuclear waste repositories. Such models will be used in Monte Carlo simulations to generate probabilities of nuclear waste migration in aquifers at candidate repository sites in the United States. In this feasibility study we focused on groundwater flow rather than contaminant transport because the flow problem is more simple. A pump-drawdown test is modeled with a reduced-order set of ordinary differential equations obtained by differencing the partial differential equation. We determined the accuracy of the reduced model by comparing it with the analytic solution for the drawdown test. We established an accuracy requirement of 2% error at the single observation well and found that a model with only 21 states satisfied that criterion. That model was used in an extended Kalman filter with synthesized measurement data from one observation well to identify transmissivity within 1% error and storage coefficient within 10% error. We used several statistical tests to assess the performance of the estimator/identifier and found it to be satisfactory for this application.
