Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling of Post-Myocardial Infarction: ODE/PDE Analysis with R presents mathematical models for the dynamics of a post-myocardial (post-MI), aka, a heart attack. The mathematical models discussed consist of six ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with dependent variables Mun; M1; M2; IL10; Ta; IL1. The system variables are explained as follows: dependent variable Mun = cell density of unactivated macrophage; dependent variable M1 = cell density of M1 macrophage; dependent variable M2 = cell density of M2 macrophage; dependent variable IL10 = concentration of IL10, (interleuken-10); dependent variable Ta = concentration of TNF-a (tumor necrosis factor-a); dependent variable IL1 = concentration of IL1 (interleuken-1). The system of six ODEs does not include a spatial aspect of an MI in the cardiac tissue. Therefore, the ODE model is extended to include a spatial effect by the addition of diffusion terms. The resulting system of six diffusion PDEs, with x (space) and t (time) as independent variables, is integrated (solved) by the numerical method of lines (MOL), a general numerical algorithm for PDEs. Includes PDE routines based on the method of lines (MOL) for computer-based implementation of PDE models Offers transportable computer source codes for readers in R, with line-by-line code descriptions as it relates to the mathematical model and algorithms Authored by a leading researcher and educator in PDE models

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This quick-reference handbook offers a concise and practical review of key aspects of the treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). In the context of STEMI, PPCI is the preferred mode of emergency revascularization. Access to PPCI is rapidly increasing and is now routinely practiced in both general and specialist hospitals and there has been a recent emphasis on developing STEMI networks to enhance and expedite the referral pathway. This coupled with concurrent developments to enhance the safety and efficacy of the PPCI procedure has heralded an era where STEMI interventions are increasingly considered an important subspecialty within interventional cardiology. Written by leading cardiologists who have been instrumental in the adoption of PPCI in their respective institutions, the book provides junior and senior cardiologists alike with insightful and thought-provoking tips and tricks to enhance the success of PPCI procedures, which may in turn translate into direct improvements in outcomes. The book is also relevant for healthcare providers and emergency department physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Endobiogeny Volume 1: Global Systems Thinking and Biological Modeling for Clinical Medicine offers researchers and clinicians a detailed introduction to the theory of Endobiogeny. The book presents a new approach to medicine that is at once scientific and humanistic, quantitative, and qualitative. The philosophical and experimental basis of a global complex systems approach to physiology is presented along with a mathematical approach to modeling the dynamism of the terrain. The importance of the history and physical examination are renewed as a source of “big data readily available to clinicians for greater insight into the patient’s state. Expansion of the therapeutic compendium is proposed based on a rational, clinical approach correlated to mathematical indicators of the physiologic state. What is proposed in this work is a fundamental shift in scientific thinking with a resulting expansion of the boundaries of clinical medicine for the 21st century and beyond. Extends systems biology from the cellular to the integrative physiologic level Moves the functional medicine approach to a higher level of integration and true global systems thinking Presents mathematical tools and proofs of formulas related to the biology of functions: a biological modeling system based on the theory of endobiogeny. The biology of functions has assisted clinicians in conceptualizing, treating, and objectively monitoring the longitudinal effects of treatment through the evolution of the patient’s unique phenotypic expression of terrain

Book excerpt: The use of experimental animals is quite common in medical research, especially for pharmaceutical developments and molecular pathway studies. Considering the effects of therapeutic agents used in the treatment of tissues and systems, it becomes clear how important experimental animals and the models developed on them are in research. The benefits of using animals for disease models include accessibility, applicability, and affordability. Most importantly, they have proven to be successful in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the use of animal models for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hepatotoxicity, liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, visceral hyperalgesia, female reproduction, and more.

Book excerpt: Materials science and engineering are strongly developing tools with increasing impact in the biotechnological and biomedical areas. Interestingly, research in molecular and cellular biology is often at the core of the design and development of materials-based approaches, providing biological rationale. Focused on research relying on biology–materials interaction, IJMS launched a Special Issue named “Cells and Materials for Disease Modeling and Regenerative Medicine”. The aim of the Special Issue was to generate a compilation of in vitro and in vivo strategies based on cell–material interactions. This book compiles the papers published in that Special Issue and includes a selection of six original scientific experimental articles and six comprehensive reviews. We are convinced that this collection of articles shows representative examples of the state of the art in the field, unveiling the relevance of materials research in generating new regenerative medicine and disease modeling approaches.

Book excerpt: This Volume of the series Cardiac and Vascular Biology offers a comprehensive and exciting, state-of-the-art work on the current options and potentials of cardiac regeneration and repair. Several techniques and approaches have been developed for heart failure repair: direct injection of cells, programming of scar tissue into functional myocardium, and tissue-engineered heart muscle support. The book introduces the rationale for these different approaches in cell-based heart regeneration and discusses the most important considerations for clinical translation. Expert authors discuss when, why, and how heart muscle can be salvaged. The book represents a valuable resource for stem cell researchers, cardiologists, bioengineers, and biomedical scientists studying cardiac function and regeneration.

Book excerpt: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide with 3.8 million men and 3.4 million women dying each year. Cardioprotection refers to the prevention of CHD and the clinical improvement in patients suffering from cardiovascular problems. This book focuses on the role of cardioprotection in surgery and the use of pharmacological therapies such as ACE-inhibitors, statins and beta-blockers in order to reduce the myocardial injury sustained by the patient and the significant risk of morbidity and mortality. It includes new cardioprotective strategies aimed at improving the clinical outcomes of patients in these settings, as well as current well-established methods for reducing myocardial injury in acute coronary syndrome patients.

Book excerpt: Measurement of Cardiac Deformations from MRI: Physical and Mathematical Models describes the latest imaging and imag analysis techniques that have been developed at leading centers for the visualization, analysis, and understanding of normal and abnormal cardiac motion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of MRI in measuring cardiac motion is particularly important because MRI is non-invasive, and it is the only modality capable of imaging detailed intramural motion within the myocardium. Biomedical engineers, medical physicists, computer scientists, and physicians interested in learning about the latest advances in cardiovascular MRI should find this book to be a valuable educational resource. In particular, it is more tutorial in nature than most of the technical papers where the research was originally published. Practitioners and researchers working in the field of cardiovascular MRI will find the book to be filled with practical technical details and references to other work, enabling the implementation of existing methods and serving as a basis for further research in the area.
