Book excerpt: Piezohydraulic actuation is the use of hydraulic fluid to rectify the high frequency, small stroke oscillation movement of the piezoceramic stack into a unidirectional movement. This paper presents a quasi-steady incompressible flow model and a compressible flow model for performance simulation. These two models are derived based on the energy equations for hydraulic flow in circular pipe. Major losses and minor losses are identified and incorporated in the model. Assumptions and approximations were made to minimize computation effort while achieving good accuracy. A piezohydraulic actuation system with active valves is then built and tested. Comparison with test results shows that the simulations accurately predict system performance under loads at which value leakage is not present. The results reveal that friction losses due to viscosity are a major limitation of performance for the current test setup when operating at higher frequencies.

Book excerpt: This report, prepared by the Analytical and Physical Simulation Branch of the Tank-Automotive Technology Directorate, describes an empirical approach to modeling the hydraulic/actuator portion of a physical simulation system. A frequency response curve fit technique is applied to measure actuator responses. The curve fit technique will not produce a general analytical model but will provide an empirical model which should incorporate the system's performance characteristics for many types of analyses. The objective of this study is to define a means of predicting the validity and fidelity of physical simulation testing before actual laboratory test runs are made. In the past, the hydraulic/actuator system was assumed to be ideal where the actuator responds perfectly to the desired command signal. Motions were directly predicted from the command signals or the source from which the command signals were derived, but these prediction techniques did not account for the performance capabilities of the hydraulic/actuator system. The process used in the past gave inaccurate predictions of accelerations for simulation tests which contained high-frequency components (i.e., frequencies beyond the system's bandwidth). Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the issues of design and mathematical model identification of an advanced hydraulic system referred to as Electro Hydraulic Actuator (EHA). In the design part, insights into system design methodology are presented and used for the EHA prototype manufacturing. To get better knowledge of the system behavior, extensive open loop tests were performed. Test results are presented in the time and frequency domain, and it was concluded that system behavior is nonlinear. In the modeling part, a nonlinear mathematical model of the EHA is derived. Some of the unknown model parameters had to be identified experimentally by optimization. The last step in the system mathematical modeling was open and closed loop model validation using the experimental data. Proposed nonlinear mathematical model gives good correspondence with experimental data and can be used for system studying or controller design. Performed test show that the EHA system has high positioning accuracy (0.01mm), fairly high bandwidth (23 Hz with 20kg inertial load) and is easy to control. It shows significant benefits when compared to conventional hydraulic systems in the areas of control, efficiency and physical dimensions.

It overcomes the current shortcomings of modeling, analysis and control approaches, presenting contributions in three major areas: In the first, several novel modeling approaches are proposed: a process/shape-decomposition modeling method to help estimate the deformation force; an online probabilistic learning machine for the modeling of batch forging processes; and several data-driven identification and modeling approaches for unknown forging processes under different work conditions. The second area develops model-based dynamic analysis methods to derive the conditions of stability and creep. Lastly, several novel intelligent control methods are proposed for complex forging processes. One of the most serious problems in forging forming involves the inaccurate forging conditions, velocity and position offered by the hydraulic actuator due to the complexity of both the deformation process of the metal work piece and the motion process of the hydraulic actuator. The book summarizes the current weaknesses of modeling, analysis and control approaches. are summarized as follows: a) With the current modeling approaches it is difficult to model complex forging processes with unknown parameters, as they only model the dynamics in local working areas but do not effectively model unknown nonlinear systems across multiple working areas; further, they do not take the batch forging process into account, let alone its distribution modeling. b) All previous dynamic analysis studies simplify the forging system to having a single-frequency pressure fluctuation and neglect the influences of non-linear load force. Further, they fail to take the flow equation in both valves and cylinders into account. c) Conventional control approaches only consider the linear deformation force and pay no attention to sudden changes and the motion synchronization for the multi-cylinder system, making them less effective for complex, nonlinear time-varying forging processes subject to sudden changes.

The patterns of how these motions are concatenated form the gaits of a specific linear incremental hydraulic actuator. Linear incremental hydraulic actuators may have more than one gait. In an application, the gaits may be combined to achieve optimal performance at various operating points. The distinguishing characteristic of linear incremental hydraulic actuators is the incremental motion. The term incremental actuator is seen as analogous to the incremental versus absolute position sensor. Incremental actuators realize naturally relative positioning. Incremental motion means also that the behavior does not depend on an absolute position but only on the relative position within a cycle or step. Incremental actuators may realize discrete incremental or continuous incremental motion. Discrete incremental actuators can only approach discrete positions, whereby stepper drives are one prominent example. In contrast, continuous incremental actuators may approach any position. Linear electric motors are one example of continuous incremental actuators. The actuator has no inherent limitation in stroke length, as every step or cycle adds only to the state at the beginning of the step or cycle and does not depend on the absolute position. This led to the alternative working title Hydraulic Infinite Linear Actuator. Linear incremental hydraulic actuator provides long stroke, high force, and linear motion and has the potential to decrease the necessary resource usage,minimize environmental impact, e.g. from potential oil spillage,extend the range of feasible products: longer, stiffer, better, etc. This thesis presents an analysis of the characteristics and properties of linear incremental hydraulic actuators as well as the gaits and possible realizations of some gaits. The gait for continuous, smooth motion with two cylinders is comprehensively studied and a control concept for the tracking problem is proposed. The control concept encapsulates the complexity of the linear incremental hydraulic actuator so that an application does not have to deal with it. One other gait, the ballistic gait, which realizes fast, energy-efficient motion, enabling energy recuperation is studied.

A simplified version of this model was used to investigate the resonant-amplitude peak dispersion common to hydraulic systems. It was determined that this dispersion is primarily a function of the relative magnitudes between the cylinder and supply pressures. When the cylinder pressure is greater than the supply pressure, flow through the open valve ports is reversed thus lowering the cylinder pressure and reducing the resonant peak amplitude and frequency. Experiments were conducted using open loop and closed loop control. In open loop control, the experiment was conducted for various speeds by supplying voltage to actuator from 5V to 10V. The open loop experimental data were used to determine the transfer function of the system. In closed loop control, the PI, PD and PID controllers were implemented in the hydraulic servo system and the desired positions were set to 30 mm, 50 mm and 70 mm. The results of the closed loop control showed that the PID controller produced better performance. The results also indicate that the transfer function model represented the actual system very well.
