Book excerpt: Hybrid electric vehicles have increasingly become significant in today's scenario owing to the need for reduced dependence on traditional fossil fuels due to economic and environmental concerns. This research proposes a parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle drivetrain topology, with the difference being that instead of the conventionally used internal combustion engine, this model proposes the use of more efficient microturbine generator (MTG) as the main power source, with a battery-ultracapacitor combination for energy storage and regeneration, all of which interfaces with a 500V constant DC link. The proposed vehicle topology is designed to work in two modes of operation- as a parallel hybrid electric vehicle for the vehicle mode of operation, and in the generation mode, when it is parked, to act as a backup generation source for emergency backup generation or for vehicle to grid (V2G) power flow. This thesis details the modeling of the individual components of the proposed microturbine-generator hybrid electric vehicle, defines a control strategy for the vehicle mode of operation and provides test results for the operation of the microturbine generator system under different driving conditions.
