Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the latest modeling and control technologies in the context of air-conditioning systems. Firstly, it introduces the state-space method for developing dynamic models of all components in a central air-conditioning system. The models are primarily nonlinear and based on the fundamental principle of energy and mass conservation, and are transformed into state-space form through linearization. The book goes on to describe and discuss the state-space models with the help of graph theory and the structure-matrix theory. Subsequently, virtual sensor calibration and virtual sensing methods (which are very useful for real system control) are illustrated together with a case study. Model-based predictive control and state-space feedback control are applied to air-conditioning systems to yield better local control, while the air-side synergic control scheme and a global optimization strategy based on the decomposition-coordination method are developed so as to achieve energy conservation in the central air-conditioning system. Lastly, control strategies for VAV systems including total air volume control and trim & response static pressure control are investigated in practice.

Current systems use on/off control, where the unit primarily operates in the long lasting start up transients. A proposed solution is an air conditioning unit that runs continuously with active computer control implemented to maximize efficiency. The objective of this thesis is to develop a mathematical model for a specific air conditioning unit and to compare this model to measurements made on the specific unit. This model can then be used to develop a multi-input multi-output control law in the future. In this thesis, a linearized moving interface lumped parameter model is presented, and the derivation verified with great detail. The model predicts transient perturbations from a steady state operating point. The air conditioner tested in this work required several modifications including the addition of sensors and controllers. A description of the system is provided. Methods used to determine all of the parameters for the model are given with explanation. The model is simulated with computer software and compared with experimental data. Simulations predict the final value of superheat and pressures in the evaporator and condenser well for step changes in the compressor speed and expansion valve opening.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to control indoor temperature and reject faults tolerant like sensor deterioration, noise, disturbance and depreciation of the plant in building air conditioning system; we propose a fault tolerant controller system (FTCS) strategy for temperature control of air-conditioning system. The set-point response controller in the FTCS is designed in terms of insusceptible with noise, failure sensor, disturbance and parameter variation with optimal performance specification. The output of system was predicted through indoor, outdoor disturbance, at last based on the mathematical model of air-conditioning space. According to the system operation requirement for faults rejection, a closed-loop for rejecting faults signals is configured. It is found that the set-point response, the disturbance rejection, the noise rejection, the robust, rejection of failure sensor and the performance of the designed FTCS are better. Therefore the residual signal can now be used to monitor faults in the system while the proposed method ensures correctness of operation. Furthermore, FTCS has achieved the desired indoor temperature, superior performance, adaptation, robustness.

Book excerpt: This book presents research advances in automotive AC systems using an interdisciplinary approach combining both thermal science, and automotive engineering. It covers a variety of topics, such as: control strategies, optimization algorithms, and diagnosis schemes developed for when automotive air condition systems interact with powertrain dynamics. In contrast to the rapid advances in the fields of building HVAC and automotive separately, an interdisciplinary examination of both areas has long been neglected. The content presented in this book not only reveals opportunities when interaction between on-board HVAC and powertrain is considered, but also provides new findings to achieve performance improvement using model-based methodologies.

This book bridges the gap between decision making and control in the field of fuzzy decisions and fuzzy control, and discusses various ways in which fuzzy decision making methods can be applied to systems modeling and control.Fuzzy decision making is a powerful paradigm for dealing with human expert knowledge when one is designing fuzzy model-based controllers. The combination of fuzzy decision making and fuzzy control in this book can lead to novel control schemes that improve the existing controllers in various ways. The following applications of fuzzy decision making methods for designing control systems are considered: ? Fuzzy decision making for enhancing fuzzy modeling. The values of important parameters in fuzzy modeling algorithms are selected by using fuzzy decision making.? Fuzzy decision making for designing signal-based fuzzy controllers. The controller mappings and the defuzzification steps can be obtained by decision making methods.? Fuzzy design and performance specifications in model-based control. Fuzzy constraints and fuzzy goals are used.? Design of model-based controllers combined with fuzzy decision modules. Human operator experience is incorporated for the performance specification in model-based control. The advantages of bringing together fuzzy control and fuzzy decision making are shown with multiple examples from real and simulated control systems

Book excerpt: This thesis proposes to apply a model predictive control strategy (MPC) to multiple-zone temperature and ventilation control in view that MPC can deal with MIMO systems and constraints on inputs and outputs systematically. The MPC-based strategy consists of two MPC controllers to handle the fast-response part of the system-AHU, and the relatively slow part-zones respectively. The control objectives are maintaining multiple zone temperatures within a range that the occupants feel thermally comfortable with, and at the same time delivering ventilation air to each zone with a flow rate no lower than the demanded level. The constraint settings are taken advantage of to manipulate the behavior of the MPC controllers in response to different working conditions. The criteria for ventilation control of a multiple-zone recirculating system according to the ventilation rate procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62 are set up and followed by the MPC strategy. A computer-based building simulator is built based on the actual parameters of a real building, and real weather data is used in simulations. A number of simulation-based experiments demonstrate that the MPC strategy achieves the design objectives and is capable of dealing with multiple zone temperature and ventilation control.

Book excerpt: Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning, Sixth Edition is complete and covers both hardware control systems and modern control technology. The material is presented without bias and without prejudice toward particular hardware or software. Readers with an engineering degree will be reminded of the psychrometric processes associated with heating and air conditioning as they learn of the various controls schemes used in the variety of heating and air conditioning system types they will encountered in the field. Maintenance technicians will also find the book useful because it describes various control hardware and control strategies that were used in the past and are prevalent in most existing heating and air conditioning systems. Designers of new systems will find the fundamentals described in this book to be a useful starting point, and they will also benefit from descriptions of new digital technologies and energy management systems. This technology is found in modern building HVAC system designs.
