Book excerpt: The Cattle Value Discovery System (CVDS) was developed to predict growth and feed requirements of individual cattle fed in groups based on animal, diet, and environment information (Tedeschi et al., 2006). Evaluations of the CVDS using several databases of finishing cattle were conducted to determine the accuracy and precision of the model in predicted dry matter required (DMR) of pen-fed cattle. As well, the sensitivity of the model's predictions to deviations from actual ration metabolizable energy (ME) value was conducted. A meta-analysis of growing and finishing steers evaluated to model's accuracy in predicting DMR of individually fed steers, and the relationships between several model-predicted variables and actual performance and efficiency measures. Results for the first CVDS model evaluation involving pen-fed Santa Gertrudis cattle fed finishing diets revealed that accurate predictions of DMR are possible. The average mean bias for both steers and heifers was 2.43%. The sensitivity analysis of dietary ME values revealed that the model tends to consistently over- and under-predict DMR when the ME values are under- and over-estimated, respectively. However the ranking of pens was not affected by this mis-estimation of diet ME. In the second evaluations, both methods (mean body weight; MBW, dynamic iterative model; DIM) of CVDS were highly accurate and precise in allocating feed to pens of steers fed diverse types of diets and environmental conditions, with both models having a mean bias under 4%. The DIM model was slightly more accurate than the MBW model in predicting DMR. An evaluation of sources of variation revealed that for both models a large portion of the error was random, indicating that further work is needed to account for this variation. The meta-analysis study revealed that the model was able to account for 64% and 67% of the variation in observed dry matter intake (DMI) for growing and finishing steers, respectively. The two model-predicted efficiency measures, the ratio of DMR to average daily gain (ADG) and predicted intake difference (PID), were strongly to moderately correlated with their observed efficiency counterparts. In growing and finishing steers, DMR: ADG was able to account for 76% and 64% of the variation in observed feed conversion ratio (FCR) in growing and finishing studies, respectively. Strong correlations were also found between residual feed intake (RFI) and PID, suggesting that there may also be some similarity on these two measurements.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth, maturity and carcass traits, and to analyze relationship of each of these traits with mature weight. Growth data utilized in the study consisted of repeated weight measurements of 3044 Angus cows. A Brody growth curve was fitted to the data for each cow individually in order to predict asymptotic (mature) weight, age when animal reached 65% of mature weight, and weights, growth rates, degrees of maturity and relative growth rates at 365 and 550 days of age. Carcass data consisted of 3477 records of steers, including hot carcass weight, back fat-thickness, rib-eye area, cutability and marbling score. Genetic parameters of mature weight were estimated from a single-trait animal model for asymptotic weight, a two-trait animal model for asymptotic and weaning weight, and a two-trait animal model for repeated mature weights (measured after 4 y of age) and weaning weight. Heritability estimates for growth and carcass traits were obtained by restricted maximum likelihood from a set of two-trait animal models considering a given trait and weaning weight which was in the model to account for any effect of culling. Similarly, genetic correlations between mature weight and other traits were obtained from a set of three-trait models. A sample of 29943 animals was used for weaning weight measurements. Fixed effects in the models included weaning, cow and carcass contemporary groups. For the carcass traits the effect of slaughter age was included in the model as a covariate. Random effects in the model included direct genetic, maternal genetic and permanent environmental effects for weaning weight, but only direct genetic and repeated measurements (if in the model) for each of the other traits. Estimates of heritability for mature weight were. 44,.51 and. 57 for the single-trait model with asymptotic weight, two-trait model with asymptotic weight and two-trait model with repeated weights, respectively. The reduced heritability estimate from the single-trait model was most likely due to the effect of culling, thus, a genetic evaluation for mature size should be considered in a multiple-trait model including mature weight as well as some earlier measured growth trait. L'Hermite, CEC; and Dr J.C. Tayler, UK (adviser to the CEC). In view of the broad scope of the subject, a special plan ning meeting was organised, involvi.ng experts from the different disciplines involved. The additional participants were: Dr B. Bech Andersen, Denmarkj Dr A.J.H. van Es, Netherlands; Prof. Dr J. Martin, Belgium; Dr. St.C.S. Taylor, UK. The multidisciplinary scope of this ~eminar follows a series of seminars in 1975-76 on more specific aspects of beef production research in the individual fields involved. It seems logical that further seminars should integrate the approaches by different disciplin~s in order to achieve a balanced programme of research on the very complex topic of beef production.
