Book excerpt: L'objet de cette recherche est la modelisation de l'endommagement des materiaux composites a matrice ceramique, soumis a des sollicitations dynamiques. Apres une analyse phenomenologique du comportement a l'impact de ces materiaux, plus particulierement d'une ceramique renforcee par des fibres courtes et d'un stratifie a matrice vitroceramique, des outils mathematiques capables de decrire le comportement non-lineaire de ces materiaux ont ete mis en place dans le code explicite lagrangien dyna3d. La recherche s'est articulee autour de trois points. ? Un modele d'endommagement micromecanique, prenant en compte l'anisotropie induite par le chargement et le caractere unilateral des ceramiques a ete construit pour reproduire le comportement des materiaux fragiles. Cet endommagement est evolutif et tridimensionnel. ? Un algorithme de contact-impact, permettant en particulier de modeliser le delaminage pour un composite stratifie, a ete introduit dans le code dyna3d. Il s'appuie sur la resolution d'un probleme non-lineaire de riemann a l'interface interlaminaire. ? Pour completer la modelisation d'un stratifie a matrice vitroceramique, un modele d'endommagement intralaminaire a ete developpe en considerant l'evolution de la multifissuration de la matrice et la rupture statistique des fibres au sein des plis unidirectionnels.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
