Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of quantitatively predicting the maneuvering performance of river tows using hydrodynamic data from captive model tests and computer simulations. The effort included the formulation of the equations of motion for a river tow, a program of captive model tests and simulation studies of definitive and controlled maneuvers. The model tests were carried out with a large amplitude horizontal planar motion mechanism using a 1/13.5 scale model of a towboat and integrated oil barge tow. Simulation demonstrations were conducted using the resulting hydrodynamic data. They included the Berwick Bay bridge passage and a bend requiring a flanking maneuver. The results were as expected but no quantitative full scale data are available for a direct comparison. Based on a qualitative evaluation of the results it is concluded that captive model tests and computer simulations provide a powerful tool for the study of river tow maneuvering. (Author).
