Book excerpt: "The only way you can tell the truth is through fiction," a veteran NSA senior told Richard Thieme. Mobius: A Memoir does just that. It is about a spy but not a typical "spy novel;" it is a love story but definitely not a "romance." Mobius is a stunning exploration of the impact of a life of deception and professional intelligence work which illuminates the world in which we all now live. Fiction that preceded Mobius includes 35 short stories, 19 of which are collected in "Mind Games," and the novel "FOAM." As a security researcher said, "Richard Thieme knows what he is talking about." A senior Technical Director at NSA noted, "The depth, complexity, and texture of Thieme's thought processes break the mold."

In fact, he doesn’t remember anything at all. He was on a mission in Buenos Aires when the explosion sent a piece of shrapnel into his skull, and it missed killing him by a fraction of an inch. His memory in tatters, he returns to the United States to heal, meeting his wife for what seems like the first time. His memory will return gradually, the doctors say, but for now he feels like half a man—half a man who is about to take on a mission. In Mexico, the CIA has been paying a guerilla organization to keep radical militants at bay. When their liaison with the rebels is found dead, David is sent to discover who killed him and why. Though his memory might never return, as he slips deeper into the shadowy world of Mexican outlaws, David will see things he’d just as soon forget.

The book looks at the intellectual and spiritual roots of Handelman’s initiation into anthropology; his work on ritual and on “bureaucratic logic”; analyses of cosmology; and innovative essays on Anthropology and Deleuzian thinking. Handelman reconsiders his theory of the forming of form and how this relates to a new theory of the dynamics of time. This will be the definitive collection of articles by one of the most important anthropologists of the late 20th Century.

Book excerpt: In the 19th century, pure mathematics research reached a climax in Germany, and Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was an epochal example. August Ferdinand Möbius (1790–1868) was his doctoral student whose work was profoundly influenced by him. In the 18th century, it had been mostly the French school of applied mathematics that enabled the rapid developments of science and technology in Europe. How could this shift happen? It can be argued that the major reasons were the devastating consequences of the Napoleonic Wars in Central Europe, leading to the total defeat of Prussia in 1806. Immediately following, far-reaching reforms of the entire state system were carried out in Prussia and other German states, also affecting the educational system. It now guaranteed freedom of university teaching and research. This attracted many creative people with new ideas enabling the “golden age” of pure mathematics and fundamental theory in physical sciences. Möbius’ legacy reaches far into today’s sciences, arts, and architecture. The famous one-sided Möbius strip is a paradigmatic example of the ongoing fascination with mathematical topology. This is the first book to present numerous detailed case studies on Möbius topology in science and the humanities. It is written for those who believe in the power of ideas in our culture, experts and laymen alike.

Or more to the point, handling heirs. Even so, where there’s a will there’s a death. Try as he might, Frank just can’t avoid some of the more unsavory sides of human existence. And of heirs. There’s more than one unsavory side to the family Mobius, and Frank has front row seats to watch the quirks and squabbles of the various Mobiuses, after two older family members die. One, at least, was murdered in his squalid San Francisco apartment, while sitting on a family fortune that appears to be left to a fringe foundation connected to the victim’s bizarre neighbor. Did she kill the old miser, or was it one of the loving children? Or perhaps the old man’s arrogant attorney ... or a pregnant woman who dropped in from Australia? Frank would prefer not to ask himself such unsettling questions—this is not the bland practice he signed up for. But the questions hold the key to unraveling the massive Mobius estate. And Frank is knee-deep in Mobius debris. A QP Mystery, in the series The Frank May Chronicles.

Angry that Max dared touch Him, the King dismisses Max from His Royal Guard. Dejected, Max returns home to New Orleans to start a private Security Service. New Orleans is the last bastion of wizardry in the south. For Max's first security job, a young woman hires him to guard her mother, a prominent witch. Claims about magic have never impressed Max because he's never seen it work, but he is broke, and the daughter has compelling blue eyes. Leave it to a beautiful woman to draw Max into a whirlwind of greed, corruption, and a plot to usurp the boy King. The View Through the Möbius Window is an alternate history of magic, intrigue, and romance.

Book excerpt: “Möbius strip: a one-sided surface formed by holding one end of a rectangle fixed, rotating the opposite end through 180 degrees, and then applying it to the first end.”—Webster’s Third International Dictionary In this intriguing book, Francis Schiller describes the philosophy, life, and work of Paul Möbius, tracing through them the beginnings of modern neuropsychiatry. Freud called Möbius “a pioneer of psychotherapy.” The grandson of the inventor of the Möbius strip, he made important contributions to both neurology and psychiatry. The Leipzig physician had come to the study of medicine by way of philosophy. Consistent with his own “nonmaterialistic monism,” he sought a unifying solution to the age-old problem of the relationship between the mind and the brain. Schiller aptly uses the geometrical puzzle invented by Möbius’s grandfather to illustrate Möbius’s view of this relationship. A Möbius Strip is a unique exploration of nineteenth-century views of the “mind-body problem” and of the relationship between disorders of the brain and the psyche. It sheds light on the origins of modern psychotherapy and the concept of the unconscious, the formulation of hysteria as a psychogenic disorder, the localization of function in the brain, the relationship between neurology and psychiatry, and turn-of-the-century ideas about sex and behavior. Book excerpt: What to know about a quaint Möbius syndrome: Clinical features, Diagnosis, Management, Intervention etc. An Overview. Moebius syndrome is a quaint neurological entity that primarily affects the muscles that control facial expression and eye movement. The signs and symptoms of this condition are present from birth. The condition usually affects both sides of the face. While researchers have not identified the cause(s) of Moebius syndrome, studies suggest a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors. Moreover, many people with Moebius syndrome are born with: cleft palate, micrognathia, microstomia, macroglossia, dental abnormalities, autism spectrum disorders, bone abnormalities in hands/feet etc. · These abnormalities contribute to respective problems, which occur in many children with Moebius syndrome. Treating Moebius syndrome may require a team doctors to address symptoms, including cleft palate, crossed eyes and difficulties eating, speaking, hearing or controlling facial expressions and functioning. Thus, an attempt has been made in this Booklet to discus the Clinical features, Diagnosis, Management, Intervention etc. along with plenty of relevant Illustrations for better understanding of the quaint entity! …Dr. H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Now mankind is fighting against the Corona virus. Everyday a lot of people are dying, dead, and suffering by the Corona virus circulating the world. Heavier suffering and burden are given to the economical weak. This is a very serious problem to be solved soon. However, it is only a small tip of big problem we are facing today. The more serious and hard-to-solve problem like Gordian knot is the environmental problems of earth revealing the symptoms such as the marine pollution, destruction of forest, desertification, climatic change, and so on, accelerated by the financial capitalism and tribal egoism. As philosopher Nietzsche said, mankind becomes the disease of earth. At this rate, Homo sapiens will disappear before the great flower of Earth-Democracy begins to bloom. This terrible result is the product of ego-centric small reason, dichotomous reason, namely, instrumental reason. Such selfish exclusive reason constructs the vertical system of knowledge, vertical relationship of possession, and vertical ruling relationship at any cost. We can not avoid greed, opposition, deception, distrust, conflict, violence, and war. It is because the self is the genius of the lie and deception, so confabulates endlessly to justify and rationalize himself or herself in order to maximize his or her benefits and pleasures. We can not avoid the conflict between two monadic selves, conflict between two logoi, conflict between two benefits, and conflict between two justifications. So we can make a long list of cases of tragedic violences and wars caused by the political leaders who was just a greedy liar, swindler, intellectual dwarf, and sly hypocrite. However, the direction and way for the collective intelligence are clear and distinct. It is inevitable to solve the pains of mankind and all living bodies of earth. 2. The collective intelligence of mankind has explored and tried to discover the ultimate truth and to actualize the democracy incessantly. Science and philosophy are the tracks of hard fighting of brave men in order to make the good world where the universal truth is alive in the justice and democracy. The collective intelligence of mankind has achieved the incessant progress through the Copernican changes in scientific truth. Science has escalated the status of human beings continuously in the universe. All human beings are equal, extremely precious and solemn. Being allowed to parody Wittgenstein, now it is time to keep silent about the affairs which are not coincident with the truth of science, in order to keep the infinite value and dignity of human beings. It is because the substantialization of false concepts allows all kinds of liars and swindlers to win the games pleasantly, while justice keeps silent and human happy life and peace of earth are destroyed in the white screamings. Contemporary great philosopher Deleuze overturns such false concepts decisively and opens new metaphysics and ethics based on the contemporary sciences. Deleuze's philosophy of multiplicity and event is very close to Buddha's philosophy of Dharma and Middle Way which is also very scientific and practical. Middle Way is the ultimate truth and it is the single unique solution to solve the problem of earth ultimately. It is time we need to pay attention seriously on Deleuze and Buddha if we wish to live in justice, democray, freedom, peace, and happiness. 3. This book compares the same points and different points with selected several keywords in the epistemology, ontology, and practical theory between Deleuze and Buddhism. Both will go forward together for the democracy, peace, and happiness of earth. Michel Foucault predicted that the 20th century will be considered as that of Deleuze, which will never be a joke or an exaggeration. We can enter into the Buddhism and come out of Deleuze, and vise versa.

Book excerpt: Mobius Dick is a dazzlingly inventive story that blends techno -thriller, historical fantasy, philosophy and farce, with a cast of characters that includes composers. scientists, geniuses and madmen. Beneath its gripping plot Mobius Dick traces the history of an idea. Just how real is reality? ' as fiction it is sold plutonium, and unflaggingly enjoyable' The Sunday Times 'I have a weakness for Andrew Crumey's novels. I call it a weakness because I've noticed that, when reading them in waiting rooms or on trains, people look up angrily whenever I laugh. There's much to laugh at in Mobius Dick. Like a magical conjuror, Crumey keeps all manner of subjects - chaos and coincidence, quantum mechanics, psychoanalysis, technology, telepathy and much else - whirling amazingly in the air.' Michael Holroyd in The New Statesmen's Books of the Year 'In Mobius Dick, the narrative becomes a series of coincidences that we interpret as we wish, and all things are real only insofar as we want to see them that way. Under the skin of this teasing lurks a concern for the reputation of artists, and the role of chance in building the career of great musicians and writers. If Brahms had been ugly, would he have stayed playing the piano in a brothel? If Buddenbrooks had sold poorly, would Thomas Mann ever have been heard of at all? Andrew Crumey's work has been highly praised and not widely enough read for too long. In all the possible futures that exist for this intelligent, witty and accomplished writer, a wider readership should be more than just a matter of chance.' James Wood in The London Magazine

Book excerpt: A collection of 19 wide ranging essays on education, reading, esoteric writing, the nation-state and modern nationalism, plus articles on Leo Strauss, David Hume, Xenophon, and the English language today. The author takes a lively and assertive approach to topics which are normally given an evasive treatment by the commentators. If you have ever wondered why our social sciences continue to lag behind the natural sciences this book is for you. The author casts a spot light on the glass bead game of academic sermonizing disguised as scholarship while at the same time providing a set of insights into the most significant fact of life today: we live inside nations and do not understand what they really are. Why the form of our body-politic should become invisible to us when we seek to examine it closely is disclosed in this book and helpful approaches are suggested to cure our blindness so we can explore the civilization of the Msbius Strip. A must for all students of politics, history, and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Möbius Strip explores the history, political economy, and culture of space in central Guerrero, Mexico, during the colonial period. This study is significant for two reasons. First, space comprises a sphere of contention that affects all levels of society, from the individual and his or her household to the nation-state and its mechanisms for control and coercion. Second, colonialism offers a particularly unique situation, for it invariably involves a determined effort on the part of an invading society to redefine politico-administrative units, to redirect the flow of commodities and cash, and, ultimately, to foster and construct new patterns of allegiance and identity to communities, regions, and country. Thus spatial politics comprehends the complex interaction of institutional domination and individual agency. The complexity of the diachronic transformation of space in central Guerrero is illustrated through an analysis of land tenure, migration, and commercial exchange, three salient and contested aspects of hispanic conquest. The Möbius Strip, therefore, addresses issues important to social theory and to the understanding of the processes affecting the colonialization of non-Western societies.
