Book excerpt: I am very happy to have produced this second book of the adventures of the spaceship Cinthea and its passengers—the surviving people of Earth. Having decided to go through the Oort Cloud, not knowing what lies ahead, I had to do some in-depth thinking about what could possibly happen to them. I learned something from this. I learned that an author has to have at least a good imagination to make a story capture a reader’s interest. I have also learned that writing this preface was not the easiest thing to do. Unlike the first book, this story is all-inclusive in that there are no different scenario endings. It is all one story. From writing this book, I have become personally attached to the story concept. The concept being the continuing saga of mankind’s survival on a ringed spaceship one hundred miles in diameter. I have thought about this structure being built and have concluded, in my mind, that the possibility of this coming to actuality can be accomplished. The world’s space technology is such that this possibility is more like a probability. In other words, building such a craft can be done. The International Space Station is a technological marvel for what it represents in this day and age, but and I say but carefully, thinking about the future—it is small, clumsy, and awkward. So in this respect, I ask with guarded hope, What are we waiting for? Why not build a Cinthea-type spaceship? Why not take that “giant leap for mankind,” as Neil Armstrong said? I believe the people of the world are ready for it, but the leaders of the world are not. Ah, I digress. This second book incorporates new adventures, experiences, relationships, and tests of the human spirit. I believe the human spirit will always be tested, challenging good against evil and life against death. Perhaps this is a saga of just that—good, evil, life, and death. Let us take sides with the believers of the future and not only hope good wins but also help in securing a peaceful future.

Book excerpt: The President of the United States said There has been secret meetings of the worlds leaders to discuss what can be done. All of them came to the same conclusion: That there has to be a most unusual and extreme action taken if man is to be saved for the continuation of the human race. The reason you are here is to design a structure to be built in space to house an initial complement of 50,000 people with enough room for growth to contain 1 million. This structure is also to be maneuverable so as to travel interstellar distances for exploration in hopes of finding another suitable planet for man to live. This has an expected completion time within the 500 years predicted of the collapse of civilization. No other project in the history of this planet has been as important as this. Mobius Journey, the most incredible undertaking of mankinds survival and greatest journey ever, over a period of 800,000 years begins from the start of the greatest ice age in the history of the planet tells the story of the hundred mile diameter spaceship CINTHEA of its journey to the edge of the Oort cloud. The 50,000 people on board grows to over a population of 700,000 that lives in relative peace and harmony. Approaching the Oort cloud a hard decision has to be made about their next action that could either transport them to their future home or destroy the ship and everybody on board.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on elements from everyday life, architecture, and the arts to provide the reader with elementary notions of geometric topology. Pac Man, subway maps, and architectural blueprints are the starting point for exploring how knowledge about geometry and, more specifically, topology has been consolidated over time, offering a learning journey that is both dense and enjoyable. The text begins with a discussion of mathematical models, moving on to Platonic and Keplerian theories that explain the Cosmos. Geometry from Felix Klein's point of view is then presented, paving the way to an introduction to topology. The final chapters present the concepts of closed, orientable, and non-orientable surfaces, as well as hypersurface models. Adopting a style that is both rigorous and accessible, this book will appeal to a broad audience, from curious students and researchers in various areas of knowledge to everyone who feels instigated by the power of mathematics in representing our world - and beyond.

Book excerpt: "The only way you can tell the truth is through fiction," a veteran NSA senior told Richard Thieme. Mobius: A Memoir does just that. It is about a spy but not a typical "spy novel;" it is a love story but definitely not a "romance." Mobius is a stunning exploration of the impact of a life of deception and professional intelligence work which illuminates the world in which we all now live. Fiction that preceded Mobius includes 35 short stories, 19 of which are collected in "Mind Games," and the novel "FOAM." As a security researcher said, "Richard Thieme knows what he is talking about." A senior Technical Director at NSA noted, "The depth, complexity, and texture of Thieme's thought processes break the mold."

Book excerpt: What can you say about a girl who was supposed to die tragically young? That her guardian angel got distracted while writing her life code and inadvertently sent her into an infinite loop, a quantum uncertainty of sorts, packed with bonus features. This sort of stuff can create minor issues for the rest of Creation, issues which, of course, need to be ironed out, but there is nothing that can't be fixed with good team spirit and a can do attitude, especially if you're not unreasonably inflexible about the laws of physics. Don't worry about breaking reality, you can always make yourself another one, or several, and improve the quantum efficiency of the electromagnetic spectrum in the process. Still in beta testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique exposition of rich and inspiring geometries associated with Möbius transformations of the hypercomplex plane. The presentation is self-contained and based on the structural properties of the group SL2(R). Starting from elementary facts in group theory, the author unveils surprising new results about the geometry of circles, parabolas and hyperbolas, using an approach based on the Erlangen programme of F Klein, who defined geometry as a study of invariants under a transitive group action. The treatment of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic Möbius transformations is provided in a uniform way. This is possible due to an appropriate usage of complex, dual and double numbers which represent all non-isomorphic commutative associative two-dimensional algebras with unit. The hypercomplex numbers are in perfect correspondence with the three types of geometries concerned. Furthermore, connections with the physics of Minkowski and Galilean space-time are considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Möbius Strip explores the history, political economy, and culture of space in central Guerrero, Mexico, during the colonial period. This study is significant for two reasons. First, space comprises a sphere of contention that affects all levels of society, from the individual and his or her household to the nation-state and its mechanisms for control and coercion. Second, colonialism offers a particularly unique situation, for it invariably involves a determined effort on the part of an invading society to redefine politico-administrative units, to redirect the flow of commodities and cash, and, ultimately, to foster and construct new patterns of allegiance and identity to communities, regions, and country. Thus spatial politics comprehends the complex interaction of institutional domination and individual agency. The complexity of the diachronic transformation of space in central Guerrero is illustrated through an analysis of land tenure, migration, and commercial exchange, three salient and contested aspects of hispanic conquest. The Möbius Strip, therefore, addresses issues important to social theory and to the understanding of the processes affecting the colonialization of non-Western societies.

Book excerpt: It's not easy, being King. Especially since he has an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire-goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the priestess/princess, a couple of lightly-deranged professional magicians, a whole city full of wizards, and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's largest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him, but likes him anyway.

Book excerpt: "POWERFUL AND ORIGINAL." --THE TIMES "REWARDING AND WHOLLY ENGAGING." --HISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY "ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND POWERFUL NOVELS OF RECENT GERMAN LITERATURE." --DEUTSCHLANDRADIO KULTUR Hypnotically lyrical and intensely moving, Steven Uhly's epic novel set in the wake of World War II is a finely nuanced yet shattering exploration of universal themes: love, hatred, doubt, survival, guilt, humanity, and redemption. One night in autumn 1944, a gunshot echoes through the alleyways of a small town in occupied Poland. An SS officer is shot dead by a young Polish Jew, Margarita Ejzenstain. In retaliation, his commander orders the execution of thirty-seven Poles--one for every year of the dead man's life. First hidden by a sympathetic German couple, Margarita must then flee the brutal advance of the Soviet army with her newborn baby. So begins a thrilling panorama of intermingled destinies and events that reverberate from that single act of defiance. Kingdom of Twilight follows the lives of Jewish refugees and a German family resettled from Bukovina, as well as a former SS officer, chronicling the geographical and psychological dislocation generated by war. A quest for identity and truth takes them from refugee camps to Lübeck, Berlin, Tel Aviv, and New York, as they try to make sense of a changed world, and of their place in it.
