Generally, there are a small number of position-aware nodes, referred to as the anchors. Every other node can estimate its distances to the surrounding anchors, and then employ trilateration or triangulation for self-localization. Such a system is easy to implement, and thus popular for both terrestrial and underwater applications, but it suffers from some major drawbacks. First, the density of the anchors is generally very low due to economical considerations, leading to poor localization accuracy. Secondly, the energy and bandwidth consumptions of such systems are quite significant. Last but not the least, the scalability of a network based on fixed anchors is not good. Therefore, whenever the network expands, more anchors should be deployed to guarantee the required performance. Apart from these general challenges, both terrestrial and underwater networks have their own specific ones. For example, realtime channel parameters are generally required for localization in terrestrial WSNs. For underwater networks, the clock skew between the target sensor and the anchors must be considered. That is to say, time synchronization should be performed together with localization, which makes the problem complicated. An alternative approach is to employ mobile anchors to replace the fixed ones. For terrestrial networks, commercial drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are very good choices, while autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can be used for underwater applications. Mobile anchors can move along a predefined trajectory and broadcast beacon signals. By listening to the messages, the other nodes in the network can localize themselves passively. This architecture has three major advantages: first, energy and bandwidth consumptions can be significantly reduced; secondly, the localization accuracy can be much improved with the increased number of virtual anchors, which can be boosted at negligible cost; thirdly, the coverage can be easily extended, which makes the solution and the network highly scalable. Motivated by this idea, this thesis investigates the mobile node-aided localization and tracking in large-scale WSNs. For both terrestrial and underwater WSNs, the system design, modeling, and performance analyses will be presented for various applications, including: (1) the drone-assisted localization in terrestrial networks; (2) the ToA-based underwater localization and time synchronization; (3) the Doppler-based underwater localization; (4) the underwater target detection and tracking based on the convolutional neural network and the fractional Fourier transform. In these applications, different challenges will present, and we will see how these challenges can be addressed by replacing the fixed anchors with mobile ones. Detailed mathematical models will be presented, and extensive simulation and experimental results will be provided to verify the theoretical results. Also, we will investigate the channel estimation for the fifth generation (5G) wireless communications. A pilot decontamination method will be presented for the massive multiple-input-multiple-output communications, and the data-aided channel tracking will be discussed for millimeter wave communications. We will see that the localization problem is highly coupled with the channel estimation in wireless communications.

It is widely believed that the underwater world holds ideas and resources that will fuel much of the next generation of science and business. Unfortunately, underwater operations are fraught with difficulty due to the absence of an easy way to collect and monitor data. In this thesis we propose a novel underwater sensor network designed to mitigate the problems of underwater sensing and communication. A key feature of this system is the ability of individual nodes to control their depth in water. This single degree of freedom allows the network to cooperatively optimize placement for communication and data collection while minimizing time and energy use. The sensor network also enables a GPS-like system for localizing underwater robots to aid in data retrieval and sensing. We develop a gradient-based decentralized controller that dynamically adjusts the depth of a network of underwater sensors to optimize sensing for modeling 3D properties of the water. We prove that the controller converges to a local minimum, and implement the controller on our underwater sensor network, where each node is capable of adjusting its depth. We verify the algorithm through simulations and in-water experiments. Most applications require that we associate a location with the sensed data. We have developed an underwater mobile robot localization algorithm that allows underwater robots to act as mobile sensors in the sensor network by using ranging information. The algorithm is a minimalist, geometric-based algorithm that only relies on knowing an upper bound on the robot speed and known static node locations. We prove that the algorithm finds the optimal location of the robot and analyze the algorithm in simulation and in water with our underwater sensor network.

USNs consist of tethered (stationary) or untethered (mobile) sensor nodes. When the nodes are untethered, they move passively with the currents. A realistic mobility model is required to capture this mobility pattern. In our studies we collaborate in an oceanographic mobility model. We use this model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocols under a mobile network. Localization and data delivery are among the fundamental tasks in USNs. In this study, we propose two localization algorithms. The proposed techniques are evaluated by simulation. We propose Dive and Rise Localization (DNRL) and Proxy Localization (PL). We compare their performance with a recognized technique from the literature. The simulation results show that DNRL has high localization success, high accuracy, low energy consumption and low overhead. Hence, it outperforms the other techniques for the mobile USN. DNRL and PL are shown to be energy efficient and suitable for long-term underwater missions. In our studies, we also analyze data delivery in stationary USNs. We employ a greedy, location-based routing algorithm and investigate its performance under location inaccuracies. We analyze the delivery ratio, overhead and average end-to-end delay of the location-based routing protocol when localization techniques are employed for location estimation. Our simulations show that location estimates with low mean error do not have significant affect. However, when location estimates with higher location inaccuracy are used, the delivery ratio of the routing protocol decreases significantly.

Book excerpt: Given the increasing number of location-based applications in wireless networks, efficient solution to the problem of source localization and tracking has become more and more important. In this dissertation, we present our works on improving source localization and tracking in wireless networks. First we investigate localization algorithms for the time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurement model. Taking into account the colored measurement noise, we adopt a minmax principle to develop semidefinite relaxation algorithms that can be reliably solved using semidefinite programming with low complexity. The reduction of algorithm complexity is achieved through a simple but effective method for reference node selection among participating measurement nodes such that only a subset of selective time-differences of signal arrival are exploited. Our estimation methods are less sensitive to the source locations and can be used either as the final location estimate or as the initial point for traditional search algorithms. We also consider the more practical time of arrival (TOA) measurement model, in which the source start transmission time is unknown. We present two new methods that utilize semidefinite programming relaxation for direct source localization. We further address the issue of robust estimation given measurement errors and inaccuracy in the locations of receiving sensors. Our results demonstrate some potential advantages of source localization based on the direct TOA data over time-difference preprocessing. Next, we investigate the emitter source tracking problem in which a mobile tracking sensor and multiple anchored sensors cooperate to track and estimate a mobile source node locations. We propose a min-max approximation approach to estimate the location for tracking which can be efficiently solved via semidefinite programming relaxation, and apply a cubic function for mobile sensor navigation. We jointly estimate the location of the mobile sensor and the target to improve the tracking accuracy. To further improve the system performance, we propose a weighted tracking algorithm by using the measurement information more efficiently. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides good tracking performance and can quickly direct the mobile sensor to follow the mobile target. Lastly, we consider the multi source localization problem. With nknown source node index of each received signal, we need to identify the source of each received signal as well as estimate the locations. The combinational nature of the receive signal mixing and ordering makes the problem very complicated. We propose two algorithms based on semidefinite relaxation, and provide corresponding refinement method for each algorithm. In addition, we consider the localization problem given ambiguous anchor node measurement. We propose to identify the ambiguous anchor nodes based on the estimated noise amplitude. After identifying the ambiguous anchor nodes, we can remove the incorrect TOA measurements and obtain more accurate location estimation. In summary, the works presented in this dissertation provide several effective approaches to localization and tracking in wireless networks under different measurement models. The proposed algorithms improve the performance with relatively low complexity. As the demands for location based service rise, our methods will have applications in real systems.

Book excerpt: Distributed underwater systems, consisting of multiple sensing platforms can provide critical data to better understand complex and inter-related ocean processes. However, to correctly interpret data collected by such systems, we need to know when and where samples were obtained. Since GPS is not available underwater, the position of devices should be estimated with respect to certain known references that may reside on the surface or on the sea-bed. The main challenge is that devices are energy-constrained. Further, low-cost solutions to both the sensing platforms and the overall system design would be critical in making these systems more prevalent and available to scientists. Existing underwater tracking techniques are not well-suited to distributed systems because they are built around stand-alone platforms. They ignore vital relative information between devices and require long range communication which is both expensive and has high energy consumption. As a result, existing techniques do not scale well in multi-vehicle systems. To address these challenges, we take a systems perspective to underwater positioning. This means that instead of viewing each node as a separate entity, as in traditional systems, we consider the network as a whole. Therefore, we shift our focus to tracking a collective, rather than independently positioning a number of devices. This paradigm-shift allows us to use collaboration between devices to improve the performance and energy-scalability of mobile distributed systems. However, it makes the problem of tracking and localization more complex. Our proposed solutions draw on the framework of factor graphs to optimally and jointly estimate the trajectories of multiple nodes by combining information in 4 dimensions. This framework allows us to leverage both from network density and accurate motion information, if available. In addition, we have identified node mobility as a key factor that can both impede and improve performance. We show how mobility in combination with delays in medium access is an impairment to time-synchronization and localization and propose cross-layer and collaborative approaches to counter its effect. Our proposed strategies are essentially aimed at more efficient localization and tracking in underwater networks where resources are constrained. We believe that our techniques in combination with existing systems would address the localization requirements of a wide range of underwater applications.
