Book excerpt: Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem. According to Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, diagnostic errors-inaccurate or delayed diagnoses-persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients. It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences. Diagnostic errors may cause harm to patients by preventing or delaying appropriate treatment, providing unnecessary or harmful treatment, or resulting in psychological or financial repercussions. The committee concluded that improving the diagnostic process is not only possible, but also represents a moral, professional, and public health imperative. Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, a continuation of the landmark Institute of Medicine reports To Err Is Human (2000) and Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001), finds that diagnosis-and, in particular, the occurrence of diagnostic errorsâ€"has been largely unappreciated in efforts to improve the quality and safety of health care. Without a dedicated focus on improving diagnosis, diagnostic errors will likely worsen as the delivery of health care and the diagnostic process continue to increase in complexity. Just as the diagnostic process is a collaborative activity, improving diagnosis will require collaboration and a widespread commitment to change among health care professionals, health care organizations, patients and their families, researchers, and policy makers. The recommendations of Improving Diagnosis in Health Care contribute to the growing momentum for change in this crucial area of health care quality and safety.

Book excerpt: "Human-Computer Interaction and Management Information Systems: Foundations" offers state-of-the-art research by a distinguished set of authors who span the MIS and HCI fields. The original chapters provide authoritative commentaries and in-depth descriptions of research programs that will guide 21st century scholars, graduate students, and industry professionals. Human-Computer Interaction (or Human Factors) in MIS is concerned with the ways humans interact with information, technologies, and tasks, especially in business, managerial, organizational, and cultural contexts. It is distinctive in many ways when compared with HCI studies in other disciplines. The MIS perspective affords special importance to managerial and organizational contexts by focusing on analysis of tasks and outcomes at a level that considers organizational effectiveness. With the recent advancement of technologies and development of many sophisticated applications, human-centeredness in MIS has become more critical than ever before. This book focuses on the basics of HCI, with emphasis on concepts, issues, theories, and models that are related to understanding human tasks, and the interactions among humans, tasks, information, and technologies in organizational contexts in general.

Book excerpt: Addressing the fact that under-representation has been a concern for medical educators, medical councils, and the government for some time, this book presents the first evidence-based monograph for pedagogies that can be applied to all aspects of widening participation, tackling chronic under-representation in medical settings. Discussing implications that have international ramifications for the field, the chapters showcase a variety of case studies, research, and evaluations that draw on experiences and insights from a wide range of current practitioners, exploring topics such as outreach, access, selection, retention, and progression. From widening participation leads and officers to national representative bodies and students from medical schools nationwide, the book sets out perspectives, guidelines, and research that can be applied throughout the medical student life cycle. Novel in approach and timely in content, this edited collection coincides with the drive to increase social mobility and the proportion of medical students from educationally and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, directly tackling the class system and elitism present in the medical professions. This book will be of great benefit to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of medical education, multicultural education, and higher education, as well as those researching the idea of widening participation in the medical field and diversity in the professions more specifically.

Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO assessed the possibility of using Medicaid data to identify health care providers who may be diverting prescription drugs for illegal purposes. GAO found that states should use data contained in the Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) to identify health care providers who may be illegally diverting controlled substances, since: (1) states' MMIS often comprise the largest databases on the prescription and dispensing of controlled substances; (2) Medicaid laws allow disclosure of the data; and (3) it would enable law enforcement officials and licensing and regulatory agencies to identify sources of drug diversion.

The Philosophical Concepts of Management Through The Ages.ISBN: 0952725363 Year: 2005 The process of managing a team involves the interaction of people where individuals contribute to the running or completion of a task. As in any State or country, under any government, people live together under various laws, rules, regulations and religions. The people elect or they follow a leader, be it a democratic or tyrannical leadership. People under such regimes follow a type of management. In a business environment such methods of management prevail. A Manager will delegate and lead one or more individuals within the organization by running the business or a system. Management styles can, therefore, be considered as political systems where people participate in the smooth running of a country or a company, whether this is a global organization or a fruit stall in the back streets of any city.
