Book excerpt: A free jet defined as a rapid stream driven by pressure issuing from the nozzle exit which exhibits excellent characteristics of flow field along the width to axial distance (X/D). Where X is the axial distance and D is the diameter of the nozzle exit. The extensive understanding of flow and mixing characteristics of supersonic jet has been gaining the importance in recent years owing to its vast application in many areas like rockets, aircraft engines, and nozzle for different application etc. Over few decades the fundamentals understanding of jets and the factors affecting jet spread had been studied extensively using techniques like analytical, experimental and numerical. The effectiveness and efficiency of the jet is determined using parameters like jet spread rate, potential core length and jet decay In addition to the above shear layer also defines the efficiency of free jet. Free jet is pressure driven rapid stream which issuing either from nozzle or orifice into a quiescent ambience without any obstruction, it can also be defined using the shear layer. Shear layer is the boundary layer where the interaction between the jet and atmosphere takes place due to the exchange of momentum. The magnitude of the shear layer not only depends on the shape of exit but also the mach number of the jet]. The value of the shear layer increases with respect to the jet Mach number. Hence understanding the physics of shear layer during the evolution of jet is important. On the other hand, the characteristics of jet are also influenced by the shape of nozzle, exit profile, thickness, velocity profile and orientation of jet. Due to the velocity difference between the entraining flow and ambient boundary layer is formed at jet periphery. This boundary layer is called as shear layer. Usually shear layer is a highly unstable due to the jet spread in downstream direction. Which lead to formation of vortices. Secondly, these vortices enhance the mixing characteristics of free jet. The jet is classified into free jet, confined jet, isothermal and non-isothermal jet. A free jet is a rapid stream which discharges into ambient fluid. If the jet is influenced with reverse flow then it is called confined jet. If the jet is attached to the surface called attached jet. Based on the effect of temperature the jet is categorized as isothermal and non-isothermal.

Book excerpt: The usual boundary-layer equations describing the steady-state mixing of parallel jets are supplemented by the momentum equation in the direction normal to the flow. This allows detailed computation of the flow field in the mixing region and simultaneous computation of the outer inviscid flow. An explicit and an implicit finite difference scheme have been developed and applied in several illustrative examples. The examples include mixing of planar and axisymmetric supersonic jets of different composition with both matched and unmatched static pressures. Numerical results were compared with available experimental data obtained for the unmatched pressure case.

Book excerpt: Instability waves have been established as the dominant source of mixing noise radiating into the downstream arc of a supersonic jet when the waves have phase velocities that are supersonic relative to ambient conditions. Recent theories for supersonic jet noise have used the concepts of growing and decaying linear instability waves for predicting radiated noise. This analysis is extended to the prediction of noise radiation from supersonic coaxial jets. Since the analysis requires a known mean flow and the coaxial jet mean flow is not described easily in terms of analytic functions, a numerical prediction is made for its development. The Reynolds averaged, compressible, boundary layer equations are solved using a mixing length turbulence model. Empirical correlations are developed for the effects of velocity and temperature ratios and Mach number. Both normal and inverted velocity profile coaxial jets are considered. Comparisons with measurements for both single and coaxial jets show good agreement. The results from mean flow and stability calculations are used to predict the noise radiation from coaxial jets with different operating conditions. Comparisons are made between different coaxial jets and a single equivalent jet with the same total thrust, mass flow, and exit area. Results indicate that normal velocity profile jets can have noise reductions compared to the single equivalent jet. No noise reductions are found for inverted velocity profile jets operated at the minimum noise condition compared to the single equivalent jet. However, it is inferred that changes in area ratio may provide noise reduction benefits for inverted velocity profile jets. Dahl, Milo D. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1977. Thereafter the locations for the biennial symposium have alternated between the USA and Europe. However, the ninth Symposium on Turbu lent Shear Flows was awarded to Japan in recognition of the strong support researchers of the Pacific Rim countries have given previous symposia. The University of Kyoto was the host institution and the meeting was held in the Inter national Conference Hall. The Local Arrangements Committee did a superb job scheduling traditional Japanese dinners and arranging visits to the many cultural treasures in the Kyoto region. The meeting attracted more than 260 offers of papers. Thirty-three sessions were scheduled to accommodate the 138 papers accepted for oral presentation. In addition a poster session was scheduled on each of the three days to accommodate a total of 42 poster presentations. From the presentations at the symposium 24 have been selected for inclusion in this volume. The authors of these papers have revised them taking into consideration comments made during their oral presentation and recommendations made by the Editors. Four subject areas are identified, namely closures and fundamentals, free flows, wall flows, and combustion and recirculating flows. Eminent authorities have prepared introductory articles fot each topic to put the individual contributions in context with each other and with related research.
