Book excerpt: A procedure is presented for efficient generation of high-quality unstructured grids suitable for CFD simulation of high Reynolds number viscous flow fields. Layers of anisotropic elements are generated by advancing along prescribed normals from solid boundaries. The points are generated such that either pentahedral or tetrahedral elements with an implied connectivity can be be directly recovered. As points are generated they are temporarily attached to a volume triangulation of the boundary points. This triangulation allows efficient local search algorithms to be used when checking merging layers, The existing advancing-front/local-reconnection procedure is used to generate isotropic elements outside of the anisotropic region. Results are presented for a variety of applications. The results demonstrate that high-quality anisotropic unstructured grids can be efficiently and consistently generated for complex configurations. Book excerpt: This volume collects selected contributions from the “Fourth Tetrahedron Workshop on Grid Generation for Numerical Computations”, which was held in Verbania, Italy in July 2013. The previous editions of this Workshop were hosted by the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin (2005), by INRIA Rocquencourt in Paris (2007), and by Swansea University (2010). This book covers different, though related, aspects of the field: the generation of quality grids for complex three-dimensional geometries; parallel mesh generation algorithms; mesh adaptation, including both theoretical and implementation aspects; grid generation and adaptation on surfaces – all with an interesting mix of numerical analysis, computer science and strongly application-oriented problems.

Book excerpt: Higher resolution and reliability are the desiderata for Computational Fluid Dynamics and main drivers for the development, implementation and validation of highorder accurate methods. Complex fluid dynamic phenomena such as shock-wave boundary-layer interactions, turbulent separated flows and fluid problems involving multiple scales are adequately resolved with high-order schemes. The spatial representation of the flow field by an unstructured mesh provides flexibility, automation, fast and effortless grid generation and exceptional load balance on multiple processor computers. This plethora of advantages is mirrored by the unprecedented popularity of unstructured-based schemes. The objective of this PhD project is the implementation of two high-order schemes for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the context of the finite volume "kexact" framework: the MUSCL-TVD and WENO. The schemes are formulated in two and three space dimensions for mixed-element unstructured meshes; in addition, the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is implemented into the developed numerical framework. A wide range of applications are considered spanning from low-speed flows (M = 0.08) to supersonic conditions (M = 5.0); inviscid and viscous simulations in a broad spectrum of Reynolds numbers ranging from Re = 500 up to Re = 37×106. The applications include: the Taylor-Green vortex, the ONERA-M6 wing, flat plate, the NACA-0012 and the MD 30P-30N aerofoils, and a shock-wave boundary-layer interaction. For the examined cases, WENO schemes demonstrate superior accuracy, numerical dissipation and non-oscillatory behaviour over the MUSCL-TVD. High-order schemes inherit low numerical dissipation properties while turbulence models induce dissipation, this disequilibrium has adverse effects on the stability, convergence and accuracy of the simulation; therefore, turbulence model re-calibration would be required in order to accommodate high-order discretisation methods.

Four parts divide the chapters: structured grids, unstructured girds, surface definition, and adaption/quality. An introduction to each section provides a roadmap through the material. This handbook covers: Fundamental concepts and approaches Grid generation process Essential mathematical elements from tensor analysis and differential geometry, particularly relevant to curves and surfaces Cells of any shape - Cartesian, structured curvilinear coordinates, unstructured tetrahedra, unstructured hexahedra, or various combinations Separate grids overlaid on one another, communicating data through interpolation Moving boundaries and internal interfaces in the field Resolving gradients and controlling solution error Grid generation codes, both commercial and freeware, as well as representative and illustrative grid configurations Handbook of Grid Generation contains 37 chapters as well as contributions from more than 100 experts from around the world, comprehensively evaluating this expanding field and providing a fundamental orientation for practitioners.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning is based on the 8th International Symposium of the same name (ISHVAC2013), which took place in Xi’an on October 19-21, 2013. The conference series was initiated at Tsinghua University in 1991 and has since become the premier international HVAC conference initiated in China, playing a significant part in the development of HVAC and indoor environmental research and industry around the world. This international conference provided an exclusive opportunity for policy-makers, designers, researchers, engineers and managers to share their experience. Considering the recent attention on building energy consumption and indoor environments, ISHVAC2013 provided a global platform for discussing recent research on and developments in different aspects of HVAC systems and components, with a focus on building energy consumption, energy efficiency and indoor environments. These categories span a broad range of topics, and the proceedings provide readers with a good general overview of recent advances in different aspects of HVAC systems and related research. As such, they offer a unique resource for further research and a valuable source of information for those interested in the subject. The proceedings are intended for researchers, engineers and graduate students in the fields of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), indoor environments, energy systems, and building information and management. Angui Li works at Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Yingxin Zhu works at Tsinghua University and Yuguo Li works at The University of Hong Kong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of three viscous flowfield simulation methods for unstructured grids has been performed. The methods evaluated represent the primary viscous unstructured griding approaches currently in use including anisotropic tetrahedral, zonal hybrid (hexahedral/tetrahedral), and grids containing a mixture of cell types. The strengths and weaknesses of each method have been identified and grid resolution guidelines have been developed through a systematic study of the flow fields about a flat plate and ONERA M6 wing. Run conditions were selected to provide comparisons of a wide variety of flow field features including transonic and separated flows. Solutions are compared with theoretical and experimental data, and computational requirements of the three methods are compared to provide a relative evaluation of each method's accuracy and efficiency. Each of the unstructured grid approaches was found to provide adequate solution accuracy provided sufficient grid resolution and quality is employed. The zonal hybrid approach was found to provide the best solution computation efficiency at the expense of a long grid generation cycle time. The tetrahedral approach provided the fastest grid generation cycle time and the mixed cell approach provides the most flexibility.
