Book Synopsis Sources of Sediment and Nutrients to the Gippsland Lakes Assessed Using Catchment Modelling and Sediment Tracers by : Gary Hancock
Download or read book Sources of Sediment and Nutrients to the Gippsland Lakes Assessed Using Catchment Modelling and Sediment Tracers written by Gary Hancock and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the construction of spatially distributed sediment and nutrient budgets for the catchments draining to the Gippsland Lakes using a combined approach of spatial modelling and sediment tracing. This work was undertaken to assist development of strategies for reducing delivery of sediment and nutrients to the Gippsland Lakes. The modelling predicts the supply of fine sediment and nutrients to each link in the river network and accounts for losses during delivery to the Gippsland Lakes in reservoirs and on floodplains.

Download or read book Highways of Water written by Peter Synan and published by . This book was released on 1989-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of lakes transport, including the economic strategies of the companies who ran the ships. The book offers a new interpretation of the fascinating story of the settlement of Gippsland. Researched from primary sources, it focuses on the crucial importance of shipping on the Gippsland Lakes in opening up a difficult province. It is an engrossing narrative of pioneer navigators, of spirited contests and of the waterways which breathed life into Gippsland's infant industries. Central to the story is the construction of the artificial entrance and its impact on the lakes. Through their use as highways of water the lakes have been irrevocably changed. Although the reasons for change have been told with empathy, this book is a testament to the folly of modifying environments without fully understanding the consequences.

Book Synopsis River Water Quality Model by : P. Reichert
Download or read book River Water Quality Model written by P. Reichert and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001-08-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Scientific and Technical Report (STR) presents the findings of the IWA Task Group on River Water Quality Modelling (RWQM). The task group was formed to create a scientific and technical base from which to formulate standardized, consistent river water quality models and guidelines for their implementation. This STR presents the first outcome in this effort: River Water Quality Model No. 1 (RWQM1). As background to the development of River Water Quality Model No.1, the Task Group completed a critical evaluation of the current state of the practice in water quality modelling. A major limitation in model formulation is the continued reliance on BOD as the primary state variable, despite the fact BOD does not include all biodegradable matter. A related difficulty is the poor representation of benthic flux terms. As a result of these limitations, it is impossible to close mass balances completely in most existing models. These various limitations in current river water quality models impair their predictive ability in situations of marked changes in a river's pollutant load, streamflow, morphometry, or other basic characteristics. RWQM 1 is intended to serve as a framework for river water quality models that overcome these deficiencies in traditional water quality models and most particularly the failure to close mass balances between the water column and sediment. To these ends, the model incorporates fundamental water quality components and processes to characterise carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C, O, N, and P) cycling instead of biochemical oxygen demand as used in traditional models. The model is presented in terms of process and components represented via a 'Petersen stoichiometry matrix', the same approach used for the IWA Activated Sludge Models. The full RWQM1 includes 24 components and 30 processes. The report provides detailed examples on reducing the numbers of components and processes to fit specific water quality problems. Thus, the model provides a framework for both complicated and simplified models. Detailed explanations of the model components, process equations, stoichiometric parameters, and kinetic parameters are provided, as are example parameter values and two case studies. The STR is intended to launch a participatory process of model development, application, and refinement. RWQM1 provides a framework for this process, but the goal of the Task Group is to involve water quality professionals worldwide in the continued work developing a new water quality modelling approach. This text will be an invaluable reference for researchers and graduate students specializing in water resources, hydrology, water quality, or environmental modelling in departments of environmental engineering, natural resources, civil engineering, chemical engineering, environmental sciences, and ecology. Water resources engineers, water quality engineers and technical specialists in environmental consultancy, government agencies or regulated industries will also value this critical assessment of the state of practice in water quality modelling. Book Synopsis Applications of Non-Pollen Palynomorphs by : F. Marret
Download or read book Applications of Non-Pollen Palynomorphs written by F. Marret and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited book about non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) aims to cover gaps in our knowledge of these abundant but understudied palynological remains. NPPs, such as fungal spores, testate amoebae, dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs and animal remains, are routinely recovered from palynological preparations of marine or terrestrial material, from Proterozoic to recent geological times. This book gives the reader a comprehensive overview of the different types of NPPs, with examples from diverse time periods and environments. It provides guidance on sample preparation to maximize the recovery of these NPPs, detailed information on their diversity and ecological affinity, clarification on the nomenclature and demonstrates their value as environmental indicators. This volume will become the reference guide for any student, academic or practitioner interested in everything else in their palynological preparations.
