Starting in 1861 with the Lincoln administration's desire to maintain control of the far west, Jeffery Prushankin covers battles in New Mexico, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, including Pea Ridge in March 1862 and Pleasant Hill in April 1864. The Red River Expedition and Price's Raid are also described. The narrative places these campaigns and battles in their strategic context to show how they contributed to the outcome of the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mississippi joined South Carolina in rebellion when it voted to secede on January 9, 1861, making it the second state to leave the Union. The state provided numerous political and military leaders to the Confederacy, including President Jefferson Davis and Generals Earl Van Dorn, James Ronald Chalmers, Wirt Adams, Robert Lowery, S. G. French, and Benjamin Grubb Humphreys among others. Forty-nine infantry regiments, seven cavalry regiments, and twenty batteries of artillery saw service in all theaters of the war. Its geography, especially Vicksburg and Port Gibson, helped maintain contact with the Confederate Trans-Mississippi and prevented the Union from controlling the length of the Mississippi River until the middle of 1863. Several major battles and campaigns were fought in Mississippi, including Corinth, Iuka, Tupelo, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, and Vicksburg. The author, Charles E. Hooker, began the war as a lieutenant in the artillery and rose to the rank of Colonel. Individual chapters cover the state's secession and organization of troops; early duty outside the state, primarily at Pensacola and First Manassas; battles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri; the blockade of the Mississippi River; the battles of Iuka, Chickasaw Bluffs, and Van Dorn's operations; the Vicksburg siege; the battles of Knoxville, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and Missionary Ridge; the Meridian Expedition, the destruction of Meridian, and the Battle of Tishomingo Creek; and the surrender of Mississippi troops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mississippi in the Civil War: The Home Front, Timothy B. Smith examines Mississippi's Civil War defeat by both outside and inside forces. From without, the Union army dismantled the state's political system, infrastructure, economy, and fighting capability. The state saw extensive military operations, destruction, and bloodshed within her borders. One of the most frightful and extended sieges of the war ended in a crucial Confederate defeat at Vicksburg, the capstone to a tremendous Union campaign. As Confederate forces and Mississippi became overwhelmed militarily, the populace's morale began to crumble. Realizing that the enemy could roll unchecked over the state, civilians, Smith argues, began to lose the will to continue the struggle. Many white Confederates chose to return to the Union rather than see continued destruction in the name of a victory that seemed ever more improbable. When the tide turned, Unionists and African Americans boldly stepped up their endeavors. The result, Smith finds, was a state vanquished and destined to endure suffering far into its future. The first examination of the state's Civil War home front in seventy years, this book tells the story of all classes of Mississippians during the war, focusing new light on previously neglected groups such as women and African Americans. The result is a revelation of the heart of a populace facing the devastating impact of total war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though its most famous battles were waged in the East at Antietam, Gettysburg, and throughout Virginia, the Civil War was clearly a conflict that raged across a continent. From cotton-rich Texas and the fields of Kansas through Indian Territory and into the high desert of New Mexico, the Trans-Mississippi Theater was site of major clashes from the war's earliest days through the surrenders of Confederate generals Edmund Kirby Smith and Stand Waite in June 1865. In this comprehensive military history of the war west of the Mississippi River, Thomas W. Cutrer shows that the theater's distance from events in the East does not diminish its importance to the unfolding of the larger struggle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common image of the Confederate Army during the Civil War (1861-1865) is dominated by a limited number of early photographs of soldiers wearing the gray and butternut associated with the CS regulations and quartermaster issues. This sequence of books examines a much wider field: the original uniforms of the state militia and volunteer companies which were brought together to form the Confederate armies, and the continuing efforts by individual states to clothe their troops as wear-and-tear reduced the originally wide range of uniforms. A mass of information from state papers and other contemporary documents is illustrated with rare photographs and meticulous color reconstructions.
