Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Journal and Memoir of the Rev. Joseph Wolf: Missionary to the Jews Near Bamberg in Bavaria is a little village, called Weilersbach, which is inhabited by fifty Catholic, and fifteen Jewish families. I was born in this same village, in the year 1796. My father was the Rabbi of these Jews. My parents left this village within fifteen days after I was born, and came to Halle in Prussia, where. My father exercised again the office ofa Rabbi. I had a strict Jewish education my father began to teach me all the Jewish ceremonies, when I was four years old; and told me that all the Jews were expecting the Mes siah, every day and every hour, that his advent could not be far off, and at that time we should dine on the great fish, called Leviathan. I believed all my fa ther told me, and I considered Christians as worship pers ofa cross of wood, and no better than idolaters. I began to read the Hebrew prayer-book when I was six years old, and recited it every day, without being able to understand its contents. Lily father sent me at this time to a public Christian school, to be instructed in German reading; but I had his express command never to be present it hen the school-master began to speak on a religious subject; and my father, with this View, de sired the schoolmaster to allow me to remain at home on those days which were fixed for explaining the Christian doctrine. The schoolmaster did so, and I continued to be an orthodox Jew. When I was seven years old, I walked one day in my room, occupied in meditation; at the same time I thought about Christ Jesus, whom I considered as a bad man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of Scottish religious imperialism in the Middle East highly topical in the light of parallels with American religious imperialism in the region has interdisciplinary importance and appeal Attempting to Bring the Gospel Home portrays the Scottish missions to Palestine carried out by Presbyterian churches. These missions had as their stated aim the conversion of Jews to Protestantism, but also attempted to 'convert' other Christians and Muslims. Marten discusses the missions to Damascus, Aleppo, Tiberias, Safad, Hebron and Jaffa, and locates the missionaries in their religious, social, national and imperial contexts. He describes the three main methods of the missionaries' work - confrontation, education and medicine - as well as the ways in which these were communicated to the supporting constituency in Scotland. Michael Marten was formerly a graduate student in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Edinburgh, and now teaches at SOAS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strangers in Yemen is a study of travel to Yemen in the nineteenth century by Jews, Christians and Muslims. The travelers include a missionary, artist, scientist, rabbi, merchant, adventurer and soldier. The focus is on the encounter between people of different cultures, and the chapters analyze the travelers’ accounts to elucidate how strangers and locals perceived each other, and how the experiences shaped their perceptions of themselves. Cultural encounter is among the most important challenges of our time, a time of global migration and instant communication. Today, as in the past, history provides a valuable tool for illuminating the human experience, and this scholarly work stimulates us to contemplate the challenge of cultural encounter, for it affects us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightened essays fill the pages of this tribute to MoisheRosen. Using evangelism, ethics and eschatology as dividing sections, Jewsand the Gospel at the End of History produces profound insights of the besttheologians, exegetes, and historians who especially understand theJewish-Christian tensions. Many Jewish, Messianic Jew, and Christian issues areseamlessly broached in this volume and are woven together expertly andbeautifully. There are no easy solutions and this book can attest to thesensitivities of Jewish-Christian dialogue, but this book does a great serviceto the reader to bring them to a greater understanding of how, what, and why ofevangelism, ethics, and eschatology.

Book excerpt: "Undoubtedly one of the most fascinating areas of Judaic research, Jewish manuscripts has experienced a remarkable renaissance. What the field has largely lacked, however, are professional publications to bring together researchers who, albeit in different specialist areas (history, philosophy, Kabbalah, bibliography, art history, comparative manuscript studies, paleography and codicology), all deal variously with Hebrew manuscripts." "The authors of the eight collected articles show the perspectives and the possibilities of such a discourse based on Jewish manuscripts within Judaic Studies; moreover numerous tie-ins with disciplines relating to general medieval and early modern history and culture can be developed."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
