Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary History of the Pacific Northwest: Containing the Wonderful Story of Jason Lee; With Sketches of Many of His Co-Laborers, All Illustrating Life on the Plains and in the Mountains in Pioneer Days In presenting this "Missionary History of the Pacific Northwest" to the reading public the writer has but a few introductory observations to make. This work is not the result of a hasty impulse, nor was it called forth by any desire to serve personal, sectional, or sectarian aims. For forty-six years the author has been personally connected with the work of the Church in the Pacific Northwest, and more or less intimately associated with nearly every prominent actor in the history which he has endeavored faithfully to record. Through that association, in his early life, the purpose which he is now endeavoring to fulfill in this volume was formed in his mind, and he has studied characters and events in the light of that purpose from the beginning. His own work as a minister has led him along every watercourse, over every trail, through every mountain fastness, into every desert solitude over which the great pioneers whose going antedated his own coming by but a few years ever passed or entered. Book Synopsis And He Knew Our Language by : Marcus Tomalin
Download or read book And He Knew Our Language written by Marcus Tomalin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious and ground-breaking book examines the linguistic studies produced by missionaries based on the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America (and particularly Haida Gwaii) during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Making extensive use of unpublished archival materials, the author demonstrates that the missionaries were responsible for introducing many innovative and insightful grammatical analyses. Rather than merely adopting Graeco-Roman models, they drew extensively upon studies of non-European languages, and a careful exploration of their scripture translations reveal the origins of the Haida sociolect that emerged as a result of the missionary activity. The complex interactions between the missionaries and anthropologists are also discussed, and it is shown that the former sometimes anticipated linguistic analyses that are now incorrectly attributed to the latter. Since this book draws upon recent work in theoretical linguistics, religious history, translation studies, and anthropology, it emphasises the unavoidably interdisciplinary nature of Missionary Linguistics research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Indian Missions on the Pacific Coast: Oregon, Washington and Idaho It is a pleasant fact that the son of a missionary, born where his parents long taught the Indians by precept and example, now writes the story of the work and its results. It adds interest to the narrative that he dedicates it to that father, who yet continues to sow the "good seed of the word," and to gather its fruits. This history can be attested by living witnesses, and facts which are patent to many. The author's plan is to follow both the order of events and the logical relation of topics. As the subjects treated are intermingled with the entire history of the United States, the history of missions to the Indians of Oregon and Washington is intensely interesting. Its germs are found in the first ideas of God, given by the earliest explorers, Lewis and Clarke, and by hunters and trappers.
