Book excerpt: Stamford Raffles, James Brooke, John Crawfurd and Anna Leonowens were some of those who came from Europe or the United States to Southeast Asia in the nineteenth century — and then wrote about what they saw. Their writings deserve to be read now for what they truly were: Not objective accounts of a Southeast Asia frozen in imperial time but rather as culturally myopic and perspectivist works that betray the subject-positions of the authors themselves. Reading them would allow us to write the history of the East-West encounter through critical lenses that demonstrate the workings of power-knowledge in the elaborate war-economy of racialised colonial-capitalism. Many of the tropes used by these colonial-era scholars and travellers, such as the indolence or savagery of the native population, are still very much in use today — which means we still live in the long shadow of the 19th century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positioned on a major trade route, the Toba Batak people of Sumatra have long witnessed the ebb and flow of cultural influence from India, the Middle East, and the West. Living as ethnic and religious minorities within modern Indonesia, Tobas have recast this history of difference through interpretations meant to strengthen or efface the identities it has shaped. Antiphonal Histories examines Toba musical performance as a legacy of global history, and a vital expression of local experience. This intriguingly constructed ethnography searches the palm liquor stand and the sanctuary to show how Toba performance manifests its many histories through its "local music"—Lutheran brass band hymns, gong-chime music sacred to Shiva, and Jimmie Rodgers yodeling. Combining vivid narrative, wide-ranging historical research, and personal reflections, Antiphonal Histories traces the musical trajectories of the past to show us how the global is manifest in the performative moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiating Abolition: The Antislavery Project in the British Straits Settlements, 1786-1843 explores how sex and gender complicated the enforcement of colonial anti-slavery policies in the region, the challenges local officials faced in identifying slave populations, and how European reclassification of slave labor to systems of indenture or 'free' labor created a new illicit trade for women and girls to the Straits Settlements of Southeast Asia. Through a history of early-19th century slavery and abolition in this often overlooked region in British imperial history, Herzog bridges a historiographical gap between colonial and modern slave systems. She discusses the dynamic intersectionality between perceptions of race, class, gender, and civilization within the Straits and how this informed behavior and policy regarding slavery, abolition, and prostitution within the settlement. This book provides an important new perspective for scholars of slavery interested in Southeast Asia, British imperialism in the Indian Ocean world and Asia, the East India Company in the Straits, and gender and sexuality in the context of empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aceh was a sultanate of considerable political and economic influence in the Malay Archipelago up to the late eighteenth century. Its strategic location and commercial importance attracted the English East India Company which made efforts to establish a factory there. Acehnese rulers, expecting a treaty arrangement to enhance the sultanate's trade as well as their own political position, responded favourably to early British overtures. The British came closest to securing a base in Aceh between 1760 and 1824 at a time when Aceh was looked upon as an invaluable entrepot to support their China trade and as a possible naval base to protect British interests in the region amidst growing threats from the French and Dutch. In this search for a British base, Aceh appeared prominently in the original intention and instructions of the authorities in India and in London. In the end, the British decided on Penang and, later, Singapore. In the accounts of the founding of Penang and Singapore, Aceh is consequently treated only incidentally. This study, however, traces the course of those events back to Aceh where British interest in establishing a base for the region was first stirred. It also examines the reasons why this interest was not sustained. As trade between the British and Aceh grew, relations between the two became strained. This study looks at the course of Aceh-British relations that culminated in the 1819 treaty. The treaty, arranged by Stamford Raffles, was as much an attempt to resolve an internal Acehnese conflict as it was to regulate Aceh-British relations.

Book excerpt: Summary: "Since the rise of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the traditional Islamic schools known as the madrasa have frequently been portrayed as hotbeds of terrorism. For much longer, the madrasa has been considered by some as a backward and petrified impediment to social progress. However, for an important segment of the poor Muslim populations of Asia, madrasas constitute the only accessible form of education. This volume presents an overview of the madrasas in countries such as China, Indonesia, Malayisia, India and Pakistan."--Publisher description.
