Book Synopsis Gonzalez and Daughter Trucking Co. by : María Amparo Escandón
Download or read book Gonzalez and Daughter Trucking Co. written by María Amparo Escandón and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-04-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of L.A. Weather comes “a whimsical, humorous, and passionate mystery that explores the love and hurt of a father and daughter on the run” (Jorge Ramos, News Anchor for Univision). “1,001 nights in a Mexicali women’s prison . . . González and Daughter Trucking Co. is about our compulsion to make events into stories and stories into bridges of understanding.”—John Sayles, Screenwriter and Director Serving a sentence in a prison in Mexico, Libertad González finds a clever way to pass the time with the weekly Library Club, reading to her fellow inmates from whatever books she can find in the prison’s meager supply. The story that emerges, though, has nothing to do with the words printed on the pages. She tells of a former literature professor and fugitive of the Mexican government who reinvents himself as a trucker in the United States. There he falls in love with a wild woman with whom he shares his truck and his life—that is until Joaquín González unexpectedly finds himself alone on the road with a baby girl and González & Daughter Trucking Co. is born. Joaquín and his daughter make the cab of an 18-wheeler their home, sharing everything—adventures, books, truck-stop chow, and memories of the girl’s mother—until one day the girl grows into a woman, and a chance encounter with one man causes her to rebel against another. With her stories, Libertad enthralls a group of female prisoners every bit as eccentric as the tales she tells. In González and Daughter Trucking Co., bestselling author María Amparo Escandón seamlessly blends together these elements into one compelling and unexpected conclusion that will have you cheering for Libertad and filled with joy.

Download or read book Bolivia Pocket Adventures written by Vivien Lougheed and published by Hunter Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunter Pocket Adventure Guides contain all the practical travel information you need - places to stay and eat, tourist information resources, travel advice, emergency contacts, and more - plus condensed sections on history and geography that give you good background knowledge of the destination. The author is fascinated with the destination and her passion comes across in the text, which is lively, revealing, and a pleasure to read. Sidebars highlight unusual facts and tell of local legends, adding to your travel experience. Detailed town and regional maps make planning day-trips or city tours easy. Adventures covered range from town sightseeing tours and nature watching to sea kayaking and organized jungle excursions. Travelers looking for a more relaxed vacation may want to sign up for traditional dance lessons in Bolivia, drum classes in the Dominican Republic, or attend a weaving school in Bolivia - these cultural adventures will introduce you to the people and afford you a truly unique travel experience. Over the last two years I have traveled Bolivia four times. Among the score of Bolivian guides that I have reviewed, two stand out: Pocket Adventures Bolivia and Footprint Bolivia. Both are solid guides, yet, both have their flaws.

Book Synopsis Economic Freedom of the World, 2002 by : James D. Gwartney
Download or read book Economic Freedom of the World, 2002 written by James D. Gwartney and published by The Fraser Institute. This book was released on 2015 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) annual reports have presented an economic freedom index for a large set of nations around the world. This index is designed to measure the degree to which a nation's policies and institutions protect its citizens' economic freedom. In this article, we explain the basic methodology employed in constructing the index and summarize the study's findings. Many factors influence the degree of economic freedom. Although no single statistic can capture all of them and their interrelations fully, the index presented here captures most of the important elements and provides a reasonably good measure of cross-country differences in economic freedom. The identification of these differences has been useful for researchers interested in the relationship between economic freedom and other economic variables such as income, economic growth, income equity, and environmental quality. To date, dozens of scholarly articles and hundreds of policy and journalistic reports have made use of the index.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Cultural Heritage by : Tracy Ireland
Download or read book The Ethics of Cultural Heritage written by Tracy Ireland and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely acknowledged that all archaeological research is embedded within cultural, political and economic contexts, and that all archaeological research falls under the heading ‘heritage’. Most archaeologists now work in museums and other cultural institutions, government agencies, non-government organisations and private sector companies, and this diversity ensures that debates continue to proliferate about what constitutes appropriate professional ethics within these related and relevant contexts. Discussions about the ethics of cultural heritage in the 20th century focused on standards of professionalism, stewardship, responsibilities to stakeholders and on establishing public trust in the authenticity of the outcomes of the heritage process. This volume builds on recent approaches that move away from treating ethics as responsibilities to external domains and to the discipline, and which seek to ensure ethics are integral to all heritage theory, practice and methods. The chapters in this collection chart a departure from the tradition of external heritage ethics towards a broader approach underpinned by the turn to human rights, issues of social justice and the political economy of heritage, conceptualising ethical responsibilities not as pertaining to the past, but to a future-focused domain of social action.
Book Synopsis Research Handbook on Jurisdiction and Immunities in International Law by : Alexander Orakhelashvili
Download or read book Research Handbook on Jurisdiction and Immunities in International Law written by Alexander Orakhelashvili and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Handbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the international law of jurisdiction and immunities, illustrating those aspects in which the law of jurisdiction and law of immunities are mutually interdependent, as well as shedding light on the implications of that interdependence. With authoritative contributions from recognized experts, it offers an impartial perspective on the applicable international law, independent from any positions held in governmental or other institutional circles. Authoritative and well-structured, the book covers all major topics in relation to jurisdiction and immunities, such as conceptual justifications for jurisdiction and immunities, extra-territorial jurisdiction, types of available immunities, normative basis for jurisdiction and immunity claims in various types of judicial proceedings. It explores the complex questions arising when a state asserts its jurisdiction over persons that are based abroad, or are not that state’s citizens, or otherwise have no connection with that state, as well as how tensions are further heightened when one state tries to assert jurisdiction, in its own courts, over another state or an international organization such as the UN. This much-needed Handbook will appeal strongly to academic researchers and postgraduate students. Civil servants and employees of international organizations and NGOs will also find it an invaluable resource.
