Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Peter Tucker’s response to the requests of many of his former co-workers and friends to put on the record for the benefit of posterity his experience in over half a century of public service. Always meticulous and orderly, he begins from his roots in Shebar and goes through the various aspects of his life, describing in simple terms the trials, tribulations and triumphs of his long career in the public Service. He gives a clear and very informative story of the origin of his ancestors, who founded the Tucker Kingdom in the Sherbro region of Sierra Leone, their wealth and power, as well as their relationship with the British Crown. In his peculiar modest way, he describes his life and successes in his beloved St. Edwards School and his triumphs at Fourah Bay College. He entered the Public Service of Sierra Leone in 1955, and in the year of Independence he was deployed in the Prime Minister’s Office, where he was given the responsibility of recruiting and training Sierra Leoneans to replace the expatriate staff of the colonial administration and for the transformation of the Civil Service into one for an Independent State. He describes the way he did it and the immense satisfaction he found in serving his country well at that important turning point in its history. The Author also gives an insider’s account of the 1967 General Elections and the conflict arising therefrom. He candidly describes the events of that period and refutes many of the speculations, distortions and guesses about what really happened in those few days. Working with the NRC, with all the eccentricities of Brigadier Juxon-Smith is an unforgettable experience, and the reader is given a glimpse of it in this book.

Book excerpt: MISSION BOY tells a little-known, true story of early American history. Nearly forty years before the English founded their first permanent colony in the New World, at Jamestown, a small group of Jesuit missionaries sailed north from Havana, Cuba to virtually the same location. Guided by a Native American convert to Christianity whom they called Don Luis, the Jesuits hoped to bring Christianity to the Algonquin Indians and to claim a new territory for King Phillip II of Spain. Their mission did not go according to plan. The Indian guide they depended on slipped back into the forests. Within half a year, only one of their number remained alive. And he had to wait more than another year for rescue, in a vast, beautiful, but treacherous land. In a manuscript written nearly 50 years ago, but not published until now, venerated Chesapeake Bay poet and novelist Gilbert Byron tells their tale. At long last, his story finds its readersin Mission Boy.

He shows up in a new high school in a new town under a new name, makes a few friends, and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend's family to die-of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, moving on to the next target. But when he's assigned to the mayor of New York City, things change. The daughter is unlike anyone he has encountered before; the mayor reminds him of his father. And when memories and questions surface, his handlers at The Program are watching. Because somewhere deep inside, Boy Nobody is somebody: the kid he once was; the teen who wants normal things, like a real home and parents; a young man who wants out. And who just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's mission. In this action-packed series debut, author Allen Zadoff pens a page-turning thriller that is as thought-provoking as it is gripping, introducing an utterly original and unforgettable antihero.

We were not planning to kidnap one of them. Especially not the most useless one. But we had him—his room key, his cell phone, and his secrets. We were not planning on what happened next. We swear. Praise for Kill the Boy Band “Moldavsky’s sharp, shocking debut is like no other.” —Entertainment Weekly “Fiercely entertaining . . . Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the young African who came to be called "The Apostle of Simple Faith."While most missionary biographies detail the lives of Western missionaries, this is the story of the African missionary that God called to the United States when slavery and segregation were a way of life. Previously published under the title The March of Faith, this book details the moving life story of Samuel Morris. After a miraculous escape from certain death during the ravages of intertribal warfare in Liberia, Africa, Kaboo was converted to Christ by Methodist missionaries and baptized under the name Samuel Morris. Traveling to America for pastoral training in the late 1880's, his trip was a missionary voyage in itself when several seamen were lead to Christ through his godly life. At Taylor University his example of faith made him a leader among the students and a challenge to the faulty. An unforgettable biography which shows Christ's love felling all racial barriers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Black immigrant journeys from the Caribbean to Canada—and through multiple musical personas—in a “deeply moving” memoir “suffused with poetic prose” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). As a clever, willful boy in a tiny village in the tropical forests of Trinidad—raised by his indomitable grandmother, Miss Excelly, and her King James Bible—Antonio Michael Downing is steeped in the legacies of his scattered family, the vibrant culture of the island, and the weight of its colonial history. But after Miss Excelly’s death, everything changes. The eleven-year-old seems to fall asleep in the jungle and wake up in a blizzard: he is sent to live with his devoutly evangelical Aunt Joan in rural Canada, where they are the only Black family in a landscape starkly devoid of the warm lushness of his childhood. Isolated and longing for home, Downing begins a decades-long journey to transform himself through music and performance. A reunion with his birth parents, whom he’s known only through story, closes more doors than it opens. Instead, Downing seeks refuge in increasingly extravagant musical personalities: “Mic Dainjah,” a boisterous punk rapper; “Molasses,” a soul crooner; and, finally, an eccentric dystopian-era pop star clad in leather and gold, “John Orpheus.” In his mid-thirties, increasingly addicted to escapism, attention, and sex, Downing realizes he has become a “Saga Boy”—a Trinidadian playboy archetype—like his father and grandfather before him. When his choices land him in a jail cell, Downing must face who he has become. “Lush language and sensory details make the fascinating events of this memoir pop. An authentic, entertaining, and timely account of a creative immigrant’s experiences.” —Booklist “Downing’s elegant, engaging memoir will have particular significance to readers from the Caribbean diaspora, but it will be understood by any reader who has ever had their world suddenly upended and needed to make it whole again.” —Library Journal “A rich memoir about how far some folks have to travel just to arrive where they began.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

Book excerpt: Who Shall Enter Paradise? recounts in detail the history of Christian-Muslim engagement in a core area of sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous nation, home to roughly equal numbers of Christians and Muslims. It is a region today beset by religious violence, in the course of which history has often been told in overly simplified or highly partisan terms. This book reexamines conversion and religious identification not as fixed phenomena, but as experiences shaped through cross-cultural encounters, experimentation, collaboration, protest, and sympathy. Shobana Shankar relates how Christian missions and African converts transformed religious practices and politics in Muslim Northern Nigeria during the colonial and early postcolonial periods. Although the British colonial authorities prohibited Christian evangelism in Muslim areas and circumscribed missionary activities, a combination of factors—including Mahdist insurrection, the abolition of slavery, migrant labor, and women’s evangelism—brought new converts to the faith. By the 1930s, however, this organic growth of Christianity in the north had given way to an institutionalized culture based around medical facilities established in the Hausa emirates. The end of World War II brought an influx of demobilized soldiers, who integrated themselves into the local Christian communities and reinvigorated the practice of lay evangelism. In the era of independence, Muslim politicians consolidated their power by adopting many of the methods of missionaries and evangelists. In the process, many Christian men and formerly non-Muslim communities converted to Islam. A vital part of Northern Nigerian Christianity all but vanished, becoming a religion of “outsiders.”

Book excerpt: This book presents a descriptive picture of a community of people (Tartweh, Drapoh and Jeadepo) who lived in abject poverty, worship other gods and are socio-politically isolated from the rest of the country, Liberia. Lillian, an American Christian Missionary from Washington State had a vision to embark on a mission to reduce illiteracy, mortality and promote Christianity in the region. The gods of the region, led by their chief, who is called Qui and his chief lieutenant name Capu, are mad and vowed to destroy the work of God. Lillian is determined and armed with the power of God. Standing resolutely alongside her are the poorest of the poor children going against the spirits of darkness. Lillian Swanson has passed on to glory almost two decades ago but spiritually empowered inhabitants are on the offensive in the region, the so-called gods are on the run. The sympathizers are calling on the spirits of their ancestors for help. The battle goes on as government and the civil society stand aloof. It is a book that will keep you awake all night long.
